Or.. Shepard got frozen or whatever.
If he survives a mid-space crash...
He'll survive anything!
No Shepard = No Mass Effect!

also it would explain the horrible ending (BW not wanting to get tied down by something they said/wrote prematurly)

I'd love to see Shepard again, but aslong as BW choose the right character paradigm for future games I'm solid. They'd definitely need to measure up to Shepard for me to fall in love with them though. Hell, just play Garrus off as the protagonist.

If Bioware plans to make Mass Effect 4, I do believe the story will be about the surviving galaxy race (Human, Asari, Salarian and Turian) will have to face the Krogans or Rachni threat without Commander Shepard and a new hero will rose up.
What rachni or Krogan threat? They should stay your allies. Krogan are the best, I am just hoping they have a Krogan team-mate if there is a ME4. As for what it covers what seems most likely would be a different hereo helping the races survive after the relays being destroyed. or colozing on the planet the normandy was on like what has been said. Probably a few decades after 3. Would be nice if we could pick what race we are.

The ending left many unanswered questions that my brain is pleasantly ruminating over. I have a fad for open endings like this, it gives you something to ponder when it's over and there are some complex questions still with ambiguous answers.

Garrus is not a bad idea.

Think Wrex in Mass Effect 2 and 3.

Or any kind of continuation? Maybe it's a bit early to speculate, but searching for 'Mass Effect 4' gave me this:
Speaking with Gamerzines, BioWare's Greg Zeschuk has said "We've said Mass Effect is supposed to be a trilogy, so you're going to see at least a third Mass Effect, and even more if everything goes well."
If there is another game that takes place in the ME universe....Bioware can create another storyline all they want. Any new character I make will still look like my Shepard no matter what the game calls her.

Garrus is not a bad idea.
Sheppard is always better but, in Shadow Broker Dossiers, there's something interesting about Garrus:
"Former C-Sec officer. Exceptional tactical and team-building skills. Leadership potential overshadowed by Shepard. Unlikely to fully develop under Shepard's command. "

The bad thing is that ME3 had Shepard dead... So the chances of ME4 are low. But the ending of them meant that there will be a continue...
Well Shepard died at the start of ME2, but came back. You see Shepard is not human he is something else. The fact that the Crucible stated that he was the first organic to screw up the "Reaper" peace plan says enough.

There are no rules about making any number of titles in a franchise. Mass Effect was thought as a trilogy they say, but they could have made two games or four out of the story. But making many titles is not about creating a great game franchise for its fan, it's always a way to milk more money out of consumers and fans of a specific game. Game studios will always try to create a quality product if they have the budget and the time to do so, but it is the investors who set the rules of game productions now, not the gamers. For example, EA and the game studios they own follow that model most of the time: capitalize on consumers exceptations, not production value. They know you loved ME and they will continue to create material for this franchise until the preorders are too low to make profitable previsions at the release. For them, the deadline to release is also more important than Quality Assurance and the stability of the game. Just take a look at the number of bugs (minor and major) that are solved AFTER the release, sometimes just a few weeks after the release! And what to think of DLCs? This wall of text is long enough, I won't go there.
You know that feeling you get at the end of a good movie? Our bitter-sweet feeling that says "I don't want it to end"? That is what they capitalize on, not our satisfaction.
I can't blame you really, I'm a fan myself. But every good thing must have an end, especially good things. This is the only way to preserve the good memories and prevent them of being tarnished by bad follow ups...

I just hope that it is NOT an MMO. Everyone wants to make multiplayer games these days. Its like single player games are dying. Not everyone wants to play an MMO though. Some people like me prefer the tradtional story based RPGs which are sadly becoming a rarity.
I care about the characters and the setting, and I have a hard time getting into it when I have to deal with other player's immaturity and elitism. As much as I love Star Wars I couldn't get into SW:TOR no matter how much I tried. I couldn't get into the setting or even the storylines due to things like watching other players run around with the same companions as me. I also am a console gamer and sometimes take my XBOX places where there is no internet. The obsession that gaming companies have with making multiplayer games is really alienating to people like me who are just not inclined to them, but they are a cash cow so they'll just continue with an inevitable ME MMO
I think that a good idea for a Mass Effect 4 would be set a few decades to centuries after ME3 where there are no mass relays, and people are struggling to gain back what they lost. A lot of the asari would still be alive so maybe Liara or Aria could make a cameo or even be a major player in the plot. I think it'd be fun to play another race besides human. It could be similar to the first Dragon Age where you have divergent plots based on your background and gender. These people would probably have to deal with the krogan and rachni. Maybe there would also be another threat, such as beings from another galaxy. They could make something just as good as the first three if they put as much effort into the writing, voice acting and art.

I'm going with the Indoctrination Theory, which means for me there will be a fourth (and more than likely final) Mass Effect. Stargazer at the end of the credits even says there is time for one more story. I would have been furious at the ending if it weren't for this theory, but with this in mind it actually made the game better. Check it out:
This! The entire situation with the ME3 ending as a final ending didn't make sense from the beginning. Bioware, the ones we put so much trust into, made a great game and just blew it at the end, and state that it won't be changed... because they literally can't do it anymore maybe? And why will the extended cut take till summer? I wouldn't be surprised if some of those "cinematics" were in a trailer.
I think the Stargazer scene was just their way of telling us "ok... ONE more".
