But why should it stir something up? The existence of a $7 DLC simply doesn't mean that the game has any less of that stuff than it otherwise would have had. If that's what causes the feeling, then the feeling is irrational.

It stirs something up because we consider the possibility that this DLC is simply a portion of the product that was extracted during development in order to be advertised as "bonus content". If this is the case, then we are indeed receiving less of a product than we would have if DLC didn't exist. I'm not claiming that this is the case however, but how exactly are we to know that it isn't?

Actually, ColdbringeR, what I've gotten from your "side" of the discussion is that it doesn't matter what you are told or what the facts are, that people should be able to feel however they feel. So really, you don't particularly care for any reassurances or facts or reasons.

This being the case, what do you want to hear? What would make you stop feeling like you're getting an incomplete product at this point? (And I say "at this point," because I would rather not have you ask for solutions which require us to go back in time, because time travel is not currently feasible.)

EDIT: If we cannot agree to disagree, or if there is nothing we can say or do to alleviate this feeling, then there is no more discussion to be had, is there?

Simply put, I'm not the trusting type. Truly, I don't wish to cause any more drama in this matter and will bow out from this discussion. I apologize for my snide and inappropriate demeanor in this debate as well. I will agree to disagree, as it were.

As noted, Shale came with every new copy of DA:O. I believe you're thinking of the Warden's Keep DLC.

That aside, the reason they can't include it in the retail game is that the content of the game must be locked down months before release. That's not to say they couldn't give it away with every new game purchase, but they decided to reward those who pre-ordered. I'd suggest waiting to see what the DLC reviews are like and if it seems worth it, pick it up. If not, you'll save yourself some bucks. Either way, you still get a complete game without the DLC.

Tell the users that did "PREORDER" through a Digital Download service like Steam why couldnt they get the SE like everyone else whose preorder was automatically upgraded for them if they went else where.  Will I buy the DLC? Yes, but it would been nice if it was offered to me though the retailer of my choice for free like everyone else was.

I have postulated a very simple reason why this may not have been possible multiple times before when the question was initially raised. It may not be possible... wait I found what I'd said before:

Here's my theory on why Steam wouldn't have signature edition. I don't believe they can do timed preorders. They can run preorders normally as we all know but this is a very specific set of circumstances that I don't believe Steam has ever been faced with before. Can you name any game on Steam that has ever had a "preorder before XX/XX/XX" date set? How about broadening it, because I don't think any game has ever had a preorder before bonus. You can claim that EA is behind this but it could damn well be a simple technical limitation never before encountered in the digital distribution market. Part of Steam's setup, and perhaps it's main flaw, is that almost all(Only exception I can think of is the 2D HL game that was cut because it had a virus on the site it linked to) game are visible.

You get a code, and that code makes it free to download.

DTKT wants to know if the code we get is simply an activation code for something that is already on the disc, or if it initiates a download of something that's not on the disc. Unfortunately, we have no way to tell at the moment.

I'm still very annoyed that steam got the preorder RIGHT AFTER the sigunature edition offer ended, that was bad and wrong.

But I do agree with the OP that day 1 dlc that isnt actually included in the game free feels a lot like money grubbing to me. If its done before the game has gone gold then it should be included in the game not as an extra fee for the complete game at launch.

500 Bioware points says it's a download.

Why? If the development of extra content was budgeted for by projecting that a certain number of people would pay for it, where do you get the impression that you are entitled to that content for free?

It's an ADD-ON, same as alloy wheels on a car, or double cheese in your subway. The product is "complete" without the additional content, but if you want to enhance your product with entirely optional additions, you have to pay.

Why is that complicated?

I imagine also DLCs like this one that involve a new character are best made at the same time as the main game because they can make sure all the voice acting is integrated and you can get full conversations between everyone.

Doesn't mean it was stripped from the game if it was made at the same time though.

That is true. Basically it's your choice to buy it. A car dealership can sell you cars but with the radio taken out. Nobody is forcing you to buy from that dealership, and if you do, well you are a sucker, but it was your choice.

And where should the line be drawn? When they offer to sell you a "car" that is actually a wheel and a set of keys? The fact that people have a choice in the matter is fine, but people also have fingers to type and complain about offers they find disagreeable. That's what this thread is about. Get over it.

I forgot the green font. I'm being sarcastic and was feeding the Bioware apologists who probably are too stupid to realize I'm being facetious. They have been trolling the forums since the Baldur's Gate legacy forums and have an excuse or red herring for every attempt at constructive criticism. They are still here and easy to find.  In fact there are 3 characters here who I'm not going to bother naming but they know who they are.

They've been trolling these threads and every time you criticize the game the Biotards respond with:

1)"Go back to the Bethesda forums."
2) "Go play a JRPG"
3) "Nobody forces you to buy DLC"
4) "You are a retard and the game content is locked 8 months ago so obviously they can't release DLC until launch date March 8."

DLC after launch is fine.
DLC before the release should be given for free for everyone who registers a freshly bought game.

That's just my take on the issue, but as you can clearly see the Day One Paid DLC is not neccessarily a "win the customer's heart" tacitc.

I only played DA:O, ME1, and ME2 with their free content (Shale, Zaeed, etc.) and despite being somewhat disappointed, I don't feel ripped off at all. They are all still complete games without DLC gimmicks.

As long as people demand extra content, BioWare will release them, period. Complaints like "it's too early" or "they are obviously removed from the vanilla game" won't change a thing. If you want to make a difference, don't buy them, ignore the clowns who say "you can afford expensive game systems but can't afford DLC".

DLC's an interesting thing, isn't it?

I get the essential problems with it and the great benefits of it. But regardless of those things there is the problem of time. A lot of players will buy the game around the time of the release, maybe a month after. But there's that brief moment where a game has a shelf life in your local mega-store. Once a game's been out past that point it's sales are going to drop some.

And let's say that a game takes 20-30 hours to beat. And let's be nice and say that a person will beat a game about 3-4 times before putting it down or selling it.

So...if there's not DLC out in those first month or two then I imagine the sales for the DLC goes down. People have moved on, die-hards will stay around and download, but a large portion of your audience will not care.

So they need to rush out the DLC in those first few months where it's all important to keep the audience.

I can understand the feeling that they're ripping something out of the game and forcing us to pay more for a game we just bought, it's a legitimate feeling, in my opinion. You don't buy a book or movie and then are told that extra scenes and new characters and plot are one micro-payment away (unless it's a full-blown sequel). But you also have to realize that you've got to market these things and let people know about the DLC.

The thing to do is buy what you're comfortable with.

I enjoyed the ME2 downloads (especially the story based ones, but I was a sucker for the armor and weapons too) and generally felt the DA:O downloads were a little meh (especially Witch Hunt which reused too many old maps....erm everything was reused). I'll be looking over everything and deciding what's worth the time and money for DA2.

But early DLC is something everyone does because it doesn't mean anything if you're DLC comes out a year after everyone's moved on to a new game.
