30 cunning + 40 points for max lock picking gives you a score of 70. The hardest locks require a score of 70. Success!

Can anyone confirm that it works like this (has 30 cunning (and no more) + 4 ranks of deft hands and has not encountered a chest they can not pick)? The concept seems right, but with most stats, its the points above 10 that count toward benefits, so is 30 cunning really good enough for all locks, or would it need 40? And does anyone know if 70 is the magic number for traps as well?
I'm working on a new rogue now and I'd like to know if I can feel safe stopping at 30 cunning or not (ya its a good stat for rogues, but I want to focus on dex and have just enough cunning for locks, traps and persuasion).
Thanks,

The hardest locks in the game have a difficulty of 60, so you'd need a cunning of 70 to unlock them. Every rank in the Deft Hands line give a rogue +10 to lockpicking checks. So if you take all 4 lockpicking talantes, you still need a cunning score of 30+ to unlock all chests.
With a high-Cunning build, you can also choose to not pick the deft hands talents or at least not all of them (my rogue with 40+ cunning has only 3, for example).

1) by skill, max by this route is 40 points to make up the rest of the number u need
2) cunning, 30 is the magic number
b/c 30+40=70

So what you are saying is that to be able to open every chest in the game you would need to have a cunning of 70? That would mean putting everythink in cunning and nothing in anything elsle till you are around 20 something level. Because Leliana is Level 11 with 24 in cunning. So that means that she would have to be another 16 levels higher before she could obtain that there. Don't make sense to me.
No, re-read the post right above yours by BlackVader. I can't really put it more plainly than that.

I'll be nit-picky and mention that is not quite true. There is apparently a Dalish thief-catcher you can meet in a random encounter after failing a stealing attempt in the Dalish camp who has a chest that is @ 64. I vaguely recall mention of one other >60 chest, too...BlackVader wrote...

Thanks,
Lockpick stop at 70, Pickpocketing stops at 99, I dont know the numbers for Traps or Coercion though I think Persude stops at 80 though from what ive heard.
those are the key numbers to pass any of their related checks. So technicaly a Rogue with a very high Cunning like 100 by end game wouldnt even need those ralated skills/Talents along with doing extremly high damage with lethality talent for any weapon they wield.
Also Dex based rogues are fun, they dont get hit as often but cant do the upto 900+ damage others can.
