I have been fine with all the achievements in 90% of my games, but yeah the ones in Guitar Hero and Rock Band are insanely difficult! I don't think anyone should be penalized for not being able to sing, play guitar and bass, AND drums on expert! That's insanely difficult for the average player. So while games like Mass Effect, Lego Indy/Star Wars, Fable 2, etc I have maxed out achievements, the music games have only a handful. It's annoying!

The only achievements that get on my nerves are the ones that require multiple play throughs... I'll play a game a few times, but for like Mass Effect it got out of control! Oh and if we have to use X ability Y times, put in a fricking counter!!! It took me forever to get the ones in Mass Effect... I swear sometimes it wasn't counting the hour or two I put in spamming the ability. I think Wolverine had a counter for the achievements..?

Anyway, achievements are cool, I'm a "gotta get em all" type. Dragon Age's are pretty nice, though they require at least 2, if not 4, play throughs. Plus doing all 6 origins.

Although I've always been the OCD kind of person I never really cared about achievements in pc games. Somehow they feel too "console" for me.

Have you managed to get any of the alien companion achievements?  I have played thru nearly 4 times and I have only got the Sentinel Ally achievement - and I don't even remember taking Kaiden along that much

The good thing is, if you don't like them or care about them then they'll have no effect on anything. On the other hand, for those who like the little vanity achievements, they get the extra replay value (and challenge) of chasing them all down.

It's win-win (or at least, neutral-win) and takes relatively little coding so I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be in a game like this.

Why do people feel such an overpowering need to find something they don't like to obsess over, especially such insignificant details such as the DA achievements. I mean seriously, we're getting a great game and this is what you do, sit around on a forum obsessing over something that will be used to keep track off what you have done in the game so when other players look at their profile they can actually get a more detailed look into what you've actually done.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against anyone who don't want or like achievements. But seriously, out of everything in the game, this is the best you can obsess over?

Hopefully there is a way to turn off, or minimize any on-screen notification that you've just received an achievement. Also, hopefully not too many insane ones or silly ones. "You've played for 5 minutes....Achievement!"

I didn't even notice getting achievements in Mass Effect, and have no idea which ones I unlocked.  I imagine the achievements in Dragon Age will be just as easy to ignore, so I'm not terribly concerned.

I realise that achievements are pretty much required on the 360, just as trophies are on PS3. I can understand why some people like achievements.

I don't.

I don't like being told what to do, I don't like distracting sounds/graphics popping up while I'm trying to achieve something ingame, and I certainly don't like the idea that ingame actions and rewards should be routed through an out-of-game mechanism that breaks immersion. If you want me to do something ingame, send me an NPC to ask me. The same goes for handing out rewards.

So, here's hoping that on PC they can be at least hidden if not disabled altogether.

I just wish that achivements would start meaning something.. 98% of them dont do squat.

ME is one of the few games that the achivements actually open up new features...

(and no I do not count the ones you get for completeing a level and opening up the next one in that set.)

To me achivements are just stupid. They do nothing, they mean nothing. I would and could be happier if they stopped with these stupid achivements.

They are just there, not demanding to be completed. Is it that hard to ignore them if you dislike them so much?

I didn't even know what acheivements were until I got Mass Effect for the x-box and much to my surprise I found myself wanting to complete them all. I don't see anything wrong with having them. To those that want them great, to those that don't I assume they won;t get in the way of the game experience.

I quite like achievements I mainly experienced them in MMOs where they give some goals once you hit the end game.

I hate games that add what I'd call "impossible" achievements. Achievements that aren't possible during normal gameplay and require you to spend hours practising to complete them (often much longer then the actual length of the game). To me they are basically just the developer trying to increase the duration of the game without putting in any extra effort. I think that Braids' take on this type of achievement was absolutely brillant, and no I didn't bother collecting the stars.

Apparently on one of the achievements wesite i read the PC version has more achievements than the consoles. Consoles have 50 whereas the PC version has about 150

That's correct.

Ya know Beshy, you really have this habit of confirming the best of news and totally making my day on a regular basis. Thanks for that! Posted Image

Yeah I can see Mass Effect, but that's really the only game I can think of.

TF2 also had meangingful achievements before they reworked the system a couple months back.  More achievements meant new weapons for that class.

Personally, I dunno... take 'em or leave 'em. Only game ever I tried to Catch Them All was DA Journeys. And that was hardly a chore.

By the by, I'm guessing all the class specs in DAO will work off the Achievement system. ("Found the unlock event in one game, unlocked from the start in all following games.")

@ Tarufuin:

The TF2 class achievments still unlock alternative weapons, don't they? (Fair enough, you could say that is less meaningful, since they're unlocked randomly on top of that.)

I don't care much about achievements per se, a game that needs them as incentive isn't worth to be played, IMO.

I'm not fond of avchievements having ingame effects, though, be it stat bonuses or flashy popups, and I also don't like the idea of publicizing how and when I played a game, when those things happen, I will disable the achievements by any means.

The only game that have all the achivements unlocked is Mass Effect, i couldn't resist the temptation to complete them all just for the rewards, but for the rest of the games i have, i don't even bother.

The squadmate achievements were tough, I've gotten all but the asari one, you've got to do a metric ****-ton of the side quests with the squad members to get those, the only one I got by accident was the quarian one, Tali never left my squad on my first playthrough^_^

Idk though I found the weapon/ability achievement ones pretty easy to get, I got all the tech ones when I played through as an Engineer and all but stasis when playing Adept. And most games are including counters to achievements now, Gears of War has them and Halo 3: ODST featured them and I'm sure tons of games I haven't played yet feature them too.

On topic though I see achievements as ways for me to show how much I like a game, if I go back and play it several times over again (ME) to get the achievements it means I really like the game and don't mind putting more time into it to show that I do.

For my part, I like achievements as a way for the developers to add extra challenge that they feel wouldn't be appropriate for the main storyline. It's a bit like them saying "I bet you can't do this" - and since they designed the game and the entire system, they have a pretty good idea of what's possible yet challenging.

To give a more concrete example, without the Ogre-iffic Tactics achievement in DAJ, I likely wouldn't have attempted to kill an ogre with the party at full health. However, the achievement prompted me to consider this, and implied that it was possible yet challenging (which it was, on both counts). Let's ignore the fact it was "required" for an unlock; achievements in general can give you ideas of how to extend your gameplay beyond that strictly required to beat the game.

I honestly wish I could collect the 150 achievements available to the PC users on my XBOX, even if they don't give me any points.

I'm on the 360 and I enjoy achievements because they encourage me to explore avenues I probably wouldn't if left to my own devices. So my first play through is usually what I want to do regardless of what achievements I'll earn, but in other play throughs I'll probably try something different.
