Okay towards the end of a demo Hayder mentions that the slaves where worth "100 sovereigns a head"  now maybe I am a bad judge of  the Tevinter slave markets but that strikes me as a of a lot of money considering that in origins the most powerful and expensive Mage staff was about 125 sovereigns. So Why are slaves about as expensive than ancient powerful weapons of doom?

Is this a serious topic? I am actually awake right now? This can't be something people actually want to discuss...

Because Humans (and elves) are more expensive than other items? Check out literature and the Slave Trade in 18th century America, slaves were hella expensive back then. Thats why their 'owners' tried so hard to get them back if they ran away, they weren't easily replaceable.
Thats the reason, as horrible as it is.

I'm not upset or offended. It's just IMO an incredibly weird thing to want to discuss about a video game. I'm genuinely confused if this is actually a topic that wants to be taken seriously or if its tounge in cheek.

Maybe these were particularly high quality, or something?

Oh, how sweet it would be if you could buy one. I haven't had anyone to slap around in a RPG since Deekin.

While the boomstick of death is potentially massive and rare and very useful. Slaves could easily be just as pricey the way I see it considering the ammount of use you could get out of them for various things. Particularly if they are hard to come by forms of slaves or slaves with particular propperties that rich buyers are willing to pay more for. I know that by the end of DA:O I had something like 400-500 sovereigns rolling around my bag and by the end of awakening I think I had double that.

It is a valid topic. I was thinking about it as well. When you take into consideration that Zevran says that he was bought as a child on the slave market for 3 sovereigns it gets even more confusing.

Well, it does explain why that slaver on the Alienage won't leave without the elves even if we offer him 100 sovereigns.

Isabela says, humans and elves, and kids. Most of them were Blight refugees, 100 sovereigns for unskilled labour? They must be sacrifices of some sort for those wacky Tevinter magisters.

I'm a little ashamed to admit I originally read this as "staves."

I think ~100 Thedas Bucks a head is accurate. I also think super rare magic items selling for ~120 Thedas Bucks is completely rubbish and a horribly low price. Those low prices are good for the player but completely devastating to the economic stability of Thedas.

Either this is a lore discrepancy or Castillion/Hayder dealt in only what they considered high profit slaves.

It could also just be that the slave trade happens to be stronger in places like Kirkwall than in the brief look we saw in Ferelden.

It was  a random curiosity I had,  I was just playing origins and I was remebering the Demo and I just thought "hey, this thousand year old axe use by the first grey warden is about the same price as a slave, that's odd"

I was actually wondering about this too. Wonder if there is a lore reason for this or if it was just a writer mistake.

The way I reconcile that line and Zevran's price of 3 sovereigns is a good explanation that I read on the boards here earlier, which was that "100 sovereigns" could just mean "a ton of money" the way we sometimes use "a million bucks." Otherwise Thedas has some fantastic arbitrage opportunities for the immoral.

It could also be a figure of speech, I mean how many times have you lost something and rounded up a few digits? Or had an amazing prospect and over stated the gains? Or they could have really been 100 sovereigns a head, we really wont know for sure unless we are able to buy a slave in the game.

<insert complicated and tenuously supported lore reasons here>

Real reason for the discrepancy: Story and gameplay segregation.
