Advice for Rogue / Assassin type build
#1

I've just reinstalled NWN2 after a few years and am looking to build a dual wielding assassin type character. I was originally looking at a rogue / assassin, maybe shadow dancer. However, I read somewhere that it might be worth throwing some Ranger in to get favoured enemy Undead, seeing as they will be immune to my backstabs.
Any thoughts on decent builds, or links to existing builds?
Cheers,
Jed.

I usually advise against playing Rogue-type characters in the OC due to the most commonly faced enemy type there. This is still a problem in MotB...
But it's certainly very possible to beat the game regardless.

My advice is to go STR-based with decent DEX, take at least 1 Ranger level, FE: Undead, and take the improved version when you can. Wood Elf is probably the best race here.
A couple builds:

I just modified a dual katana build that I found on NWN2 Character Builder, I've changed from Wood Elf to Human and from Katana to Short Sword. How does this look?
Edit: bearing in mind that I'm only looking at the original campaign ...
Edit 2 - just noticed the above post, will investigate

Change Improved Critical for anything else. Sneak Attacks don't multiply in criticals.
Edit: Just noticed you just noticed my previous post.

Pick the weapon you like most, just make sure to use a small one in the off-hand. In the end, I usually go with the most common weapon if I don't know what I will find. You can find some nice shortswords in the OC, so shortswords might be a good choice if you don't intend to craft.

It's not bad. In fact Shortswords are probably best weapons for dual-wielding on low critical-multiplied damage builds (and this is one of them).
But for the OC you should really consider dropping Dex by 2 points and getting Strenght up to 16. Believe me, it will help tremendously in the long run. Doing d6 damage on critically immune opponents is no fun. Even moreso if they also have some kind of damage reduction... Then you'll just see zeoes for your damage dealt....

Would you even out Str and Dex, then level them up equally?

In which case you might want to change the last feat choice on your list to Weapon Mastery:Piercing
If you are really set on a pure stealth/melee character, that is the only change I would recommend, but why not consider taking some arcane or divine caster levels to provide weapon/character buffs which would supplement the shortfall of back-stabbing/criticals against many of the OC opponents?
Edited to add:
I just noticed that you have the BAB on your build listed as 26, but this won't be the case as you have most of your high BAB classes taken after 20th level. Once you go past 20th level, the BAB progression is +1/2 levels regardless of your character class. I'm not saying you can't build your character that way, but you won't have the AB you think you'll have.

I think he means start with 16/16, then focus on DEX. You can take just enough DEX for the DW feats, the level up STR, but it depends on the race. As a Wood Elf, I'd do as in the second build I linked. As a Human, maybe leave STR at 16 and take Finesse for a slightly higher AB.Jedfordski wrote...

One way or another, with 20 levels, we're talking about 1 or 2 damage/AB points, max, so there won't be a big difference.

Yes, they're piercing, I didn't notice she had taken Slashing Mastery.Mr Ordinary wrote...

Companions can do that. And in the OC, overpowered equipment can also do that.If you are really set on a pure stealth/melee character, that is the only change I would recommend, but why not consider taking some arcane or divine caster levels to provide weapon/character buffs which would supplement the shortfall of back-stabbing/criticals against many of the OC opponents?

Very true. I suppose it depends on the personal playing style and who your preferred companions are.

It doesn't work that way in NWN2. It used to in NWN1 and the Epic level BAB progression is limited in Pen and Paper Dungeons and Dragons, but not in NWN2.Here classes progress BAB at their usual rates, even after level 20.
That said, the BAB won't be stellar during the first 20 levels.
