Can anyone point me to a guide on the default portrait naming conventions? I'd like to organize my portrait folder by renaming the files in such a way that the game is able to distinguish between gender, races and if possible even classes, or at least let them appear in a certain order.
Any help you can provide with that is much appreciated!

Custom Portraits
Note: If you play multi-player Everyone will need to have the portrits named the same.

The game can only make those distinctions via the portrait 2da and those variables within, and I think this is only within the toolset that it allocates them to theor perspective assignments. You can certainly name your portraits using the Bioware naming conventions for a bit more organisation but the game will still show every portrait in the portraits folder at the selection screen, I believe.

Yeah, the problem is 3rd party creators haven't follow any particular convention, using names or class, what-not, rather than following the original NWN pattern. Over the years, I've DL'ed hundreds of portraits, some from PW packs, some from DM'ed campaigns. Some of the collections off the Vault have had individual portraits renamed. Some folks rename a portrait to their PC name when they post them for campaigns. Thus, I have multiple copies of some popular portraits under different names.
One old, and rather dated, tool I do use to review and sometimes throw out incomplete or broken portraits is NWN Spider. At one time you could use it to interface with the Vault and manage your portrait collection quite nicely. Unfortunately, that feature doesn't work anymore - probably due to changes on the Vault's end. Still a handy tool though for quickly browsing and seeing what you have collected though.

Thanks for the insightful replies, Lightfoot8, Malagant and Karvon! Where would I find info on the Bioware naming conventions?

Renaming portraits might not be a good idea. I mean even if the filename is not "correct" it might still be that version that most of the people use...
So renaming your own portrait will just lead to them not seeing it....and if you further export it/vault it it will lead to many different "versions" of the same portrait...

Yeah, I know, but I'm only asking for my personal use when playing single player games. I currently don't use any portrait packs from servers anyway.
