I know it's a rogue thing...but seems incredibly pointless. So does anyone use them (beyond getting the achievement, or that one quest in Lothering)?
Does anyone in the universe actually use traps ?

I used 1 trap for the achievement. That's it. I suppose on the harder difficulties I might find myself using them more (along with paying more attention to keeping my weapons coated with poison and utilizing other craftable items). Other then that, no, thus far I don't care to spend the time to utilize them.

if you enjoy being sneaky, then they are great fun^^
Fill a corner with traps, pull the enemies in and watch the fireworks! Or, if you're quick...
Put a few enemies to sleep, set up a trap (or two) next to their feet and giggle with glee when they awaken.

You realy wont use traps, even on Nightmare. Poisons are killer though.

"Nightmare" is pretty easy in my opinion. I hope I run into encounters hard enough that I have to resort to using traps and such. But I'm not betting on it. I'm really not looking forward to playing the game as an Arcane Warrior (which is the only other class that seems interesting to me) after my rogue is having such an easy run. Maybe it's just me but "Nightmare" seems easier than the default difficulty back in the 1990s. I can clearly recall getting my head handed to me in most games back then, and having to actually come up with some clever ideas about how to win the difficult fights. And I kinda miss that!

Yep.. use them quite often. Level 2 in sneak and level 2 in traps.
With level 2 sneak on normal mode you can walk through pretty much anywhere without being seen. Walk in front of the mob, throw down two or three large claw traps right in front of them. Head back to your party which is in hold out of agro range and move in. Traps go off (a level 2 claw trap will knock a white mob down to about half health) and then quickly mop up whats left.
Now, I'm only through mage circle, elf town and the two DLC's but this strategy has worked without fail. The only thing which pulled me out of sneak mode was the dragon in the elf ruins.

I've been playing the game on normal so far, plan to either do hard or nightmare next time, and I've not had much need for traps so far. I run a pretty simple tank/healer/dps/dps group so my tank (me) just soaks up all the damage. I see traps really coming into play if you want to use a less ideal group set up, such as no tank or no healer.

I don't use them - only got the skill in order to complete the one quest in Lothering

I use them when I want a battle to go from hard to easy. I can see why a lot of people do not use them - it takes time, and most people would rather just duke it out. However, it is ridiculous how much easier some fights are with properly placed traps.
Think about it: you set them up before hand, so during the battle all the effects are basically free - they cost no time, no mana, and no stamina. If you lay a bunch of traps you can double your party's strength.

I use them all the time. I only have one level put into it but even the small claw traps knock are very useful. Good for CC when you get mobbed by a large group, and does a good amount of damage. I don't even stealth with them, just set them up a few feet in front of my line, use a bow to get the groups attention, and then pull them back so they run into them.

Used it under a certain difficult side-boss, since after her dialogue, she walks up a hill. Put about 25 Shrapnel traps under her feet, pretty much meant I beat it at level 9 no problem. Used it a few other times as well but it seems to work only if you can move the enemies into a very tight choke spot.

I rarely used them, it was almost always more useful to lay down glyphs or grease pools.

I tried using them but I've found that the only really useful ones are the claw traps. The others don't really have enough of a payoff to be worthwhile. However there was one part where I got around 10 enemies to run through an earthquake with the acidic grease and caltrops going on them while being pelted with arrows. Just forget about the big traps that only have minor effects on the first person that passes by.

Some will find them usefull some will not. It is rather dependent on a persons play style.

I use them with a rogue MC on Hard a lot. I like to use them more for disruption, though. Set up 3 or 4 higher tier claw, caltrop, and grease traps on a larger encounter, and then lead the group of baddies into it. With most of them immobilized or knocked down and all clumped up, you can just throw a couple bombs or use Morrigan's AoE attacks to kill an entire encounter in <2 or 3 seconds.
The other nice thing it does if it's a boss/minions fight is it can immobilize or incapacitate most of the baddies for a good 20 or 30 seconds, giving you time to kill all the low health but high damage minions and then focus fire the boss.
But I don't really use them for AoE damage, no. I find that the upper tier traps do some really nice damage, but to be honest, I have bombs and Morrigan for that (I'm trying to max out both crafting skills). I like them better for disruption.
There are some encounters on Hard that were hurting me pretty badly until I started using traps extensively if I had a chance to set up beforehand. It's nice in a minion fight to have the MC and Leliana sneak into range, each killing a low hp minion with Arrow of Slaying, then running back through the traps, and once all the baddies get knocked down, throw a couple bombs, and Morrigan does Tempest/Chain Lightning/Shock. It's like 350+ damage on every baddie in the group in seconds, without them even having a chance to get close to the party.

If anything survives 25 shrapnel traps and gets away with it im guessing they wont win any beauty contests for the reminder of their lives

I LOVE setting traps in this game. So perfect for my rogue, who is a complete scoundrel.
Great all around as I take time planning out most tougher fights.
That quest in Denerim where the guy three levels higher challenges you to a duel in the back alley? Two claw traps turned that fight from a fair test of our skills to a complete disaster for Mr. Honor. Standing there with his leg in my trap while I sink poisoned and electrified blades into his back ... if you're gonna challenge a rogue to a back alley fight, hire another rogue to make sure it's a fair fight.
Moron!!

I do, the problem with Traps is the inventory crunch, so I generally craft them as I use them. Well that and pathing, the enemy doesn't always take the most logical routes through a room.
But stealthing up and dropping traps all over a room is pretty funny, pop off an arrow and break stealth, Chaaaaaarg-*boom*-gurglegaspdie.
Also, even with the highest level of Stealth I randomly get busted by white mobs, not sure what that's all about, so I just run away screaming.

Traps are handy, they're not something I use constantly but if I run into an encounter with ball-busting potential I'll usually set a couple at a chokepoint. If you don't want to bring a mage they're especially nice since you can get some CC and AE out of it, just like the throwing poisons. The first encounter in the inner-inner Dalish ruins was wrecking me until I used two traps, knocked almost everyone down to half health without me lifting a finger to start.

I have a problem, it seems I trigger my own traps. I tried with a schrapnel trap : my thief go where I asked him to set the trap, there is the setting animation... and the trap explode. Even if there is nobody but my toon there. I guess I make a mistake but I don't see.

Most of them aren't too useful. You would think that a cloud type trap would linger a bit but the majority of them don't. And since they trigger on the first enemy you get this big AoE that only hits one person.
Occasionally though, something like the acidic grease trap + caltrops can be useful when you stack other AoEs from your mage on top of it in a choke point and have everyone using ranged attacks. Unfortunately I've only found a couple of situations to do this in the game.
I really like the claw traps though... they do a lot of damage and can incapacitate an enemy. I try to use them whenever I can.
