well you dont really have to go that far out mate. just tell your party to hold, dont go way up to the enemies just place them a little bit in front of your waiting party then draw them in...

You can actually get the "traps" achievements by casting glyphs.

But no - no one actually uses traps. No one did back in the day with Yoshimo either.

Poison is nice, though. Don't require it or use it all the time, though.

Traps are pretty essential for a lot of the nightmare encounters. Especially if you are only playing 1 with mage (Morrigan or Wynne).

Traps + Grenades are a very strong source of aoe damage. I really do not think people realize how much damage traps do, even the small shrapnel trap. There are several fights where a boss charged ahead of the group and got cut down immediately due to them taking 6-7 60-100 damage hits in 1 second.

The key is getting your stealth rank up there T2 with 30-40 cunning early on is usually good enough to lay several traps without getting noticed.

Lay trap, switch to bow, plink boss == gf bos.

You cant place gliphs without being detected in some cases, rogues with enough skill can place all traps he wants. I use them in dungeons with large corridors, in places that enemies will be spawned, CC etc... very nice to use with your mage, most enemies dont hit you.
I agree traps costs money and takes some effort and planification to put them, but it is still useful.
Even its optional, its fun, i really use them.

traps rock at the beginning of the werewolf lair. Just set up a few grease and claw traps, stand off to the side and open the door. The werewolfs rush in, set off the traps, get stuck and block the rest from entering. Your character and Alister can run up and hack away. Great fun for the whole family!

There's only one fight in which traps helped me significantly (ie cone of cold + crushing prison wasn't cruise control) and that's the one fight you're heavily encouraged to lose.

If I'm not mistaken, all the raw materials for craftable items including traps are finite in supply. I don't like to invest in talents that are that dependent on finite game-content. I'd rather sell the traps and make money in any situation where I know I can just charge in and win the day.

I never used them in BG2 either, even though they were way overpowered, particularly at release.
