Unlocking is based on the official game release date for the region you live in. The PC versions, both digital and retail, will unlock beginning at the following times:

  • Western Europe0000h on March 10th
  • Great Britain & Ireland0000h March 11th

Ahem.. to quote Mister Priestly

So checking again it seems that Direct 2 Drive pre-orders wont get the game until 10 am pst because that is when they are releasing the activation code any chance someone at bioware could convince them to release it earlier to get it installed? If the game already has a time lock on it shouldn't cause any problems.

That sounds incredibly lame, and almost completely negates the entire point of being able to pre-load. :P

Moral of the story. Don't buy from Direct2Drive!

We're buying from the EA Store. I think that kinda removes us from the advice-giving pool :P

I would normally agree. :P But, I think being able to play at midnight trumps having to wait till 10 am PST.  For me, that's like a 12 hour difference, and if some of my european thieves are to be believed, you can beat the game in about 15 hours.  I will likely pull an all nighter and then make fun of the D2D people!

I'll trade my manual for being able to install it and play it the night of release.

I'll be up at midnight Monday night clicking "send info" in my D2D page in a kind of useless hope that they'll pull their heads out and release the codes. And if they don't, I guess I'll have to settle for getting my SE files and then and getting a good night's sleep.

I don't want sleep, I want the sun to come up on my bloodshot eyes while I enjoy my first playthrough.

Can't you just cancel and pre-order it from somewhere else?

True, but right now I'm kinda scared whether we'll get the game at all before release. My connection is very slow and it'll take me forever to download anything. Maybe next time I should just get a disc and save myself this mental hassle.

Looking at D2D you can cancel and ask for a refund if:

  • The time of your request for refund/credit is fewer than 48 hours from time of purchase
  • The game has not been activated
  • The game activation key has not been disclosed to you by email or webpage*
  • We find your request reasonable due to special circumstances
That first point might be a stickler, depending on when you actually put in your pre-order, but it might still be worth arguing with their support if you don't want to wait till 10 am PST.

Yeah it has been quite a bit more then 2 days since I preordered it I guess I will have to either hope some one persuasive at bioware read my post or wait. <_<

The most important point is almost certainly the fact that they have not sent you the key yet and the game is not activated. I'd still give it a shot. Worse that can happen is they say no, and you're stuck in the same position you currently are.

Several people have been dissing preloads in this topic. They're great because:

1.) Someone who preloads the game will be able to play it faster than someone who buys it retail, or has a non-preloaded digital copy.

2.) It's smart from a business/technology standpoint, especially with high-profile releases like this one, to spread out the strain on your servers over several days, rather than dealing with a crippling spike in network activity when several hundred thousand users all try to start downloading the game on release day. Not to mention not having to deal with angry customers when this makes the servers go down.

3.) Pure nerdy emotional satisfaction of knowing you have the game and it's good to go the second it's officially released.

Is anyone else having a problem with the Gamestop preload installer? I downloaded the installer files successfully according to the downloader, but when I come to running the installer executable, it auto-exits after I click "Yes" to the "Are you sure you want to run this" security prompt.
