So, having little prior knowledge of Vista, I bought a new laptop this last spring, and keep seeing this notation all over the place.  Does the 32/64bit make any difference in gaming?  I noticed it wasn't included in the required/recommended system specs, so wasn't certain.  What the heck difference does it make at all?  The comp I'm running on beats out the reccommended setting by a fair bit so I'm not worried, but moreso just curious.

With a 32 bit system, only 3gb memory will be recongized, including your graphics card's memory.

e.g. You have 2x2gb memory, HD5870 with GDDR5 1GB, in Win 32 you miss out 2gb of memory.

In a 64 bit system, that problem does not occur.

Practically, no, not really. Technically it is slower. (You probably measure time in seconds and computers measure time a much smaller scale.) System configuration and drivers will be the major determinant factors.

I use win2k8 64 as a platform for gaming, so some games are just not compatible. Vista should be fine though.

No, he does not miss out 2gb. I have 2x2gb and Vista 32 showed me 3gb.

Then I went to 64bit Vista - there are some applications that don't run on 64bit. Can't say about games, but probably there's exceptions , too. As this is brand new game, I think it should run.

...Now I am happy camper on Win7 32bit.

64 bit is by far superior, as 16 bit was to 8 bit and 32 bit was to 16. However technology takes time to learn and adapt and of course a lot of software is created on older technology (both machines and software) and development teams are/were behind. By now everything is catching up, the most problems had with 64 bit was having old devices supported, having people learning how to code with so much more data thruput and all that jazz, trying to keep this in english for all to understand. Yes there is the 32 bit 3.x upper limits. 64 bit allows for some 18 exabytes or something, which is beyond any conceivable hardware limits at this time and near future hehe.

Most applications these days now support 64 bit by providing an executable for that and a 32 bit one. Do you need it no, would it work better, i guess depends on the people who created the software but in theory yes.

Your laptop is your choice... I would'nt bother with vista on a laptop, Go right to Windows 7 which is more more ram friendly and a massive upgrade to Vista From there make the choice of 32 or 64 bit depending on your needs. your laptop probably dont really need it unless its a really beefy expensive one and you run lots of programs at the same time.

It doesn't make a difference while gaming, true. But applications start up faster and shut down faster.

So I guess you could say he could take lunch faster. Which isn't part of gaming, but I digress.
