Possible solution.  Trade items to the hermit for more than just one of the 3 items, but where to get the items to trade?

Yes, the answer is a riddle three, one lies behind the old oak tree, another in your bag should be, the third is where the Templar flees, but trade for the acorn last for three.

I ended up killing him. I have no idea what I could have given him to get the acorn. I didn't want to give up the scarf (don't know if he would have take it anyway) and that's all I really had.

He took the scarf, a book I got for matchmaking in the elf camp and I can't remember the third item I traded. I got the Ancient Elven armor helmet, the acorn and I can't remember the third item. lol.

there is indeed a ring you can trade him but for the life of me can't remember where I got it or what it was called.

So to sum up you can trade him the book cammen gives, the scarf from the werewolf or a ring from somewhere.

The 3 items you can trade to him are:

Scarf and book, as mentioned previously

Amulet for completing the halla quest. Talk to women by halla, I lied and convinced her to kill halla, she gave me it's horns, which I then had the merchant make an amulet out of, which can be traded to the hermit.

There's also the +3 cunning, -1 strength ring you find in the forest.

Possibly two books?  The chest in the Dalish camp has the song book, not sure if that can be traded.  And the book you can get for helping the wannabe hunter.

Remember the elf that is injured that you find and have the option to take him back to town? Well you can loot him before you take him back. One of the things you get are some +2 constitution boots, which you can trade to the hermit.

he seems to like some stuff the dalish elves give you when you complete some quests there but there's really more than one solution here. you can kill him by going for his tree, trade or ...

i think you can also beat him in his own question game where you get favorable trades for the stuff he already traded to start or something like that ... not sure because the guy has a way of driving you crazy yourself so killing might just be better :P

You can Trade him the Dawn Ring which is stupid since the book he gives you says you need that and the Dusk ring to make a combo set which has a bonus to armor

Dusk Ring is received from the elven alienage when denerim is invaded btw

Also think you can trade him the Song book you can steal from behind Zathrien

I think it's the book from the getting the elf to get married. A silver ring, any will do. The third item is the scarf from the dieing werewolf. The ring I'm not sure of. I had it in my inventory and I traded it. Pretty sure it was just a generic silver ring. Could be wrong, though.

I never found any use for the book he offers to trade, and his helmet was worse than the rest I had. I've just gotten the acorn and accepted the Oak Staff both times through.

I just confirmed that a generic silver ring will not work for a trade with the hermit.  The dialogue option is to trade a silver ring found in the forest which is probably why so many think it’s just a generic silver ring, but in fact the ring is actually the Dusk Ring found in the chest at the shade camp in Western Brecilian Forest.

I was able to confirm by having a single generic silver ring in my inventory.  I had the Dusk Ring equipped on Leliana when I initially spoke with the hermit, but I did not have an option to trade the ring.  Then I unequipped the ring from her, and when I spoke with the hermit again, the option to trade for the silver ring appeared.  When I traded the ring, the Dusk ring was removed from my inventory, but I still had the generic silver ring in my inventory.

So scarf you were supposed to take back to the husband

Cammens book

Steal the Song Book if you are skilled enough

Halla's horn amulet?

Dusk Ring

Deygans boots you take off him when he is unconcious

Seems like pretty much everything you get when around the dalish can be traded. Maybe some of the amulet rewards you get for completing quests? Such as the one for finishing the scarf thing or the amulet you get for telling varathorn you don't require him to make you a bow or armor.

Alot of stuff possible I guess and each player can probably come up with 3 items they have no use for out of those. Or two items and then go for the stump and kill the old crazy coot.

If you inspect the Halaa in the camp and have it put down, the merchant will craft an amulet for you out of its horns which the hermit will accept in trade as well.

Do you happen to know what skill and skill level is needed to steal the book without being caught?  I assume the skill level check is against the main character as Leliana is in my party with master stealing and device mastery.  My main is a warrior with only 1 level of stealing.
