So who here is brave enough to attempt Nightmare Difficulty for their first DA2 play-through?  None of this "building your way up" nonsense here!  Who's up for the challenge?  All platforms welcome, but real heroes game on PC's they forged themselves with sweat and tears, like a warrior of old crafting the perfect blade.  Just saying.

Even if you've never played at a high difficulty before - what can trying once do to you?  You might surprise yourself.

F.A.Q.

1) Where can I join this fine band of Guy and Lady Hawkes?

Here: http://social.bioware.com/group/3833

2) Why on earth would I start on the hardest difficulty?

- Nightmare Difficulty unlocks Friendly-Fire, which adds a new level of skill to battles.  Spells that bathe an area in fire will burn you and your allies just as easily as the enemy.

- Playing on Nightmare will force you to move slower, and think about each fight.  Inevitably, this will keep you from rushing through the game and you'll appreciate a change of scenery a lot more, and new discoveries will come at a pace were you can truly appreciate them.  You'll actually enjoy pausing to take in a beautiful new location, and chat with the NPC's.

- Once you beat the game on Nightmare, lower difficulties will seem painless by comparison.  Later, when you just want to experiment with different choices/dialogue options/end game saves, you'll be able to zip through the game on a lower difficulty with ease.

- Nightmare makes every gain more satisfying, and every loss more painful.  Story-based decisions will actually make you sweat.  The temptation to choose morally questionable options that skip difficult fights or grant powerful items will be all the stronger.  The fear of what you could lose depending on the choices you make will greatly enhance immersion in the game.

- Playing at highest difficulty forces you to experiment.  If a game is too easy, you can be tempted to just do what works to get by, and not explore the talent trees fully.  This is even more true when something else is pressuring you to move as quickly as possible (like a gripping narrative).  This makes gameplay get boring, fast.  Nightmare mode helps solve this.  It grabs you by the throat and says "Whoa there little fella - you gotta pay for those epic cutscenes, and this store only accepts payment in blood, sweat, or tears."

3) What do I get if I complete the challenge?

A sense of achievement, lasting membership into the Knightmare Knights, and a sweet signature banner (coming soon).  Possibly a "Dear John" letter too, so keep tabs on your significant other's approval rating while you play.  You can patch things up with gifts like a gold necklace, a painting, or an ox bone.

4) What if I fail?

It's only a game, buddy.  It was designed to be beaten if you use the right tools (not cheats :P).  Besides, even if you reach a point where you just aren't a good enough player to continue, or don't want to invest the time in improving your skills to that level, even a few hours in Nightmare will make lower difficulties easier.  Combos that you discovered were quite effective in Nightmare will be devastating in Normal.  Sure, I'll kick you out of the group if you lower the difficulty, but don't take it personally - what's most important is that you enjoy the game.

5) What if I fail, but pretend I didn't so I can stay in the group and brag anyway?

I'll pity you.

6) Is this group about bragging rights?

Not really.  I mean, sure, you'll have accomplished quite the feat, but it's more about the journey than the fact you could brag about it later.  For example, the mature and sensible well-endowed man enjoys and admires his gift in private, the one who runs around waving it in everyone's face is just going to get it cut off by and angry stranger.  This group is for fun, not douchery.

Update:

There is no achievement for beating the game on Nightmare, so we're doing this on the honour system.  There is a special title for those who earn the "unstoppable" achievement while taking part in the Nightmare Challenge.

Been the plan all along. My initial Origins run-through was on Nightmare.

I have a feeling it's going to be harder with DA2, losing the get out of jail free cards like force-field and cone of cold.

And for the first time, I'll be a lightning mage!

I was going to start on hard, but if you only get friendly fire in Nightmare, sign me up. It's unsatisfying for me to stand in the middle of a fireball with no consequences. Call that the old school tabletop D&D gamer in me.

On board. The fact that FF is off for all difficulties except Nightmare is what decided it for me.

Agreed.

I'll try this,my skills have always been capable, but I do play the game for story, the difficulty is not something that generally interests me, but if that makes me "sweat" at the decisions (something that's never been the case) then why not?

Your group needs a better picture though, just that alone makes me rethink my decision...

Sure, been stubborn on the 'nightmare first' stance since I preordered in December! Topping it off with a two hander tank Hawke for added spice. ^.^

@jadefishes: Yey, more people that like shooting their comrades in the back! No? ;) That said, these will definitely be big consequences as the party's damage scales far higher than their health does. Say hello to one-shotting your friendly tank!

I plan on playing nightmare mode as well, but I'm not that good, so I'll just do so in private and be more comfortable in the knowledge that no one else will know when I'm huddled in a corner weeping after getting waxed for the 1000th time. :P

I agree partially, though not with the weeping.

I'm in. Really, I think people will end up playing on Nightmare because of Friendly Fire.

Well, it's up to you.  We'd love to have you on board though if you change your mind.  Don't worry about being good - in case you didn't notice, my OP bravado was all forced.

It's from an 80's-90's kids show called Knightmare, where a team of kids tried to beat a near-impossible Virtual Reality Dungeon.  It was meant to be nostalgic, campy, and tongue-in-cheek.  If you can find a cooler picture though, I'll consider it.

I want to play on Nightmare on my first playthrough for all the reasons you stated above. But my problem is, I'm going to play a 2H Warrior, and I want Isabela, Bethany and Varric in my party. That leaves me with no WnS tank and I don't know if that's feasible in Nightmare especially on the first run.

I don't know. Maybe I'll keep that party set up and play on Hard, or replace Varric with Aveline on Nightmare. I don't know. I'll decide once I have the game in my hands.

If nightmare is the only way to get friendly fire I'll go nightmare too. Though I'd rather have friendly fire on hard because I don't really feel like wading through health inflated enemies.

I might change it to that once one of us actually wins the challenge.  Until then, we're just big-mouthed, wide-eyed hopefuls.  I think our group needs to earn the right to have a group picture that epic. ;)

well if nightmare is as easy as it was in origins and awakening i'm sure i'll manage.

I have to say I think a Dev said there won't be an achievement for nightmare :-/ but honestly i'm not sure.
