I have a big problem in Mass Effect. The game is bought via Steam, and have always worked great with my old Geforce 8800 GTS.
But now I have bought a new grapichs card, an ATI HD5850, and now the game acts strange. Suddenly my sound makes a wierd cracklin sound during loading screens, and when playing the game for a while i suddenly get small graphic glitces such as white lines, which comes and goes quickly.
But then it gets even better, when the screen suddenly goes gray og blue, but the sound is still running. I have no idea what is going on. I other games such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2, no such problem occur.
My system:
CPU: Phenom II X4 3.4 GHZ
RAM: 4 GB Kingston
PSU: Corsair 850W
Graphic Card: ATI HD5850 1GB
Sound Card: Creative X-FI Extreme Gamer
I running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
Mass Effect graphic glitch and sound crackling

Which drivers are you using? You need to make sure you are running the latest version of the Catalyst drivers which is 10.11 i believe but i'm sure somebody will correct me if i am wrong

I think the latest is 11.2. (AMD releases monthly or so. Their numbering system is just year/month.)
OP, you might want to check out info on clean driver un-installation like here on RaenImrahl's blog. AMD and Nvidia drivers are both known to not do the best job of cleaning up after themselves. Generally not a problem when simply updating a driver, but when you switch, that can create problems if the old driver is not completely gone.
Edit: And of course, you might want to look at updating sound drivers too. But it sounds like this wasn't a problem before the card upgrade, which makes the X-Fi look like less of a culprit.

I have the same sort of problem, weird boxes started appearing on the floor and all the sounds that should be minor have gotten really loud without me doing anything. I came back to the game recently and all of a sudden its got all weird. And whenever I look around multicolorued boxes appear at the screens edge. I didn't used to get this but now I do. Strange.

Sounds like graphics drivers.

I have updated my ATI Drivers to 11.2, and my Creavtive drivers are the latest. Believe thay are called 2.18.0015. I have disabled the HDMI sound port on the graphic card, because I thought that was the problem, but no. Problem is still there, but I have send my graphic card to RMA now. Because now it is acting up in Windows as well.

I have that sound crackling problem too. I use Creative X-Fi card on Win7 x64 and latest drivers. So far I could not find any solution for the sound crackles.

@Trysbak: I found that Mass Effect doesn't like Catalyst A.I. set to "Standard", which is the default position. Try disabling Catalyst A.I. If that results in an unacceptable performance hit, then try it enabled on "Advanced".
I run it on "Advanced", personally, as that makes use of AFR (alternate frame rendering) with my two HD 4850s, but you do not need two graphics adapters to use "Advanced".
As for the sound stuttering, check for a weak minijack connection between your speakers and your PC. Periodically, mine will start "humming", and I have to turn the jack back and forth in the port while it's plugged in to find a "quiet" spot. If you hear no crackling while turning the jack, and if sound is OK in other games/apps, then your speaker connection is fine. Next, try turning off hardware audio acceleration in the game. (Main Menu > Settings > Audio)

i just completed the first mass effect on insanity, as a sentinel, with no problem at all. i even reached level 60 by importing this shepard back into ME1. BUT. i got ripped off for my insanity acheivment and N7 gamerpic. i was furious, and it wasnt the first time mass effect has done this to me. i really dont mind beating it on insanity again, just because how easy it is as a level 60 sentinel. i just want to know if this happened to anybody else or i just have one disturbed copy of mass effect.
