Hi,
I get the following error when running dragon age on a macbook pro running 64 bit windows 7:
c:\\windows\\system32\\d3dx9_36.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media....
I'm runing directx 11.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Steve

I am having the same problem with the same OS on different hardware. I thought DirectX 11 was supposed to be a superset of DirectX 9?

Installing latest version of DirectX 9 should fix the problem hopefully.

DirectX 9 won't install over DirectX 11, will it? I've tried running the 9.0c installer and it fails (which is what I would expect).

You must install DX9. DX11 does not have the actual DX9 files. It won't install over DX11, but it will add the needed DX9 files. Get DX 9 for 32 or 64 bit windows. However Win 7 comes with DX 9.0l which should take care of it, but some games INSIST on having the 9.0c dll files. In those cases you must DL and install 9.0c

Also sounds like u have a 32bit version of DX9 vs a 64 bit which is why you are getting that error.... try DX 9.0c 64bit

Superset of DX10.
And yeah for some reason Windows 7 doesn't have all the DX9 drivers. Silly MS!

Not just 7...I've had this issue since Server 2008 (Vista). I'm the only one in our LAN groups that needs to install the DX9 Redist everytime I reinstall Windows on my system.
Ah well, easy enough fix. ^^

I have the same error message and completely cannot open Dragon Age: Origins. I have deleted the d3dx9_36.dll file from windows\\system32 and re-run the DirectX setup which re-installs the file but the stupid game still will not load. I have never had this type of issue before. The really odd thing is that if I delete the file, it still says the same message, not even that the file is missing...

I just figured it out!!!!
The Game references the file: "c:\\windows\\system32\\d3dx9_36.dll" but the actual file that is the problem (with the 64-bit OS) is "c:\\windows\\SysWOW64\\d3dx9_36.dll". What I did was I renamed the file to d3dx9_36.dll.bak then re-ran the DirectX web installer and it re-installed the file, correcting the corruption and allowing the game to fun perfectly! The only problem is that BioWare only programmed the error message for 32-bit OS's and not 64-bit. There's two hours of time spent troubleshooting I'll never get back.

A DirectX Web Installer from MS themselves is much easier way to install DirectX API's from years past. Saves people trying to hunt down full installers.
And it begs the question you could have run the installer for DX on the Dragon Age disc
