I am now past what I would call the first story arc of the game and have left the Arid Badlands. I have invested maybe 8 hours or so (I go slowly as I explore everywhere, loot everything, and do every mission), and so far the game is still highly fun and very addictive. I have not looked at any guides or read anything that gives me any indication how much more game is left, but based on the fact that I am level 20 I would expect maybe 2-3 more large areas, which would definitely be enough game to justify the price (20-30 hours or so) considering I have 3 more characters to go and co-op. If there is more than that left, all the better. I hear that DLC is on the way eventually so that should extend the game even more.

I finally found out that your active skill and your class itself can be upgraded via items, something that first happens towards the end of the Arid Badlands. This makes the RPG aspect a tiny bit stronger as well as makes the character development and customization more satisfying. I got a support gunner class mod that automatically renegerates ammo for any weapon I or anyone on my team is holding, which is cool. I look forward to more items like this down the road.

I found an amazing pistol near the end of the Arid Badlands that blows away any shotgun or combat rifle I have collected and has made killing things so very fun. The thing fires quick 5-shot bursts with a 39-round magazine and does something like 60 base damage per bullet - every average enemy goes down in two bursts. Oh, and it is golden, which is cool. If only I was Mordecai instead of Roland and had more skills that applied to pistols...

I still have yet to play co-op, but that is mostly because I do not like playing with random people and none of my friends have the PC version.

Watch the various video reviews and they all say the same thing - Borderlands is most fun when playing co-op.  Once reviewer put it "it's not about the destination; it's about the journey".

This is not an RPG.  They call it that because of the leveling up / skill increasing feature, not because of the paper-thin story.

It's kind of why it is upsetting me a bit. By classing themselves as an RPG, that means they will be in "contest" with Dragon Age: Origins instead of going against the game that is truly their competitor this year: Left 4 Dead 2.

It really should be compared against that game instead.

You are 100% correct; it feels much more like L4D than DA:O or ME or any other RPG.

No but I do thing gaming elitists screaming apocalypse every time they see an abomination. Sometimes you play video games for 'fun'. The doomsayers existed 3000 odd years ago, and they exist now.

I think you know that then they won't stand much of a chance, L4D2 already has 3 times the pre order numbers of the first.

I don't get *why*. I'm rebelling against that game for good enough reasons. :?

I am with you on Left 4 Dead 2. I purchased the first one when it was on sale about, oh, maybe 6 months ago, and I am glad I did not pay a nickel more as I found it to be rather poorly done and quite boring. Now, this is probably because I am not heavily into co-op gaming and Left 4 Dead has basically no content unless you enjoy playing with others. There is no real story and you can beat every campaign in one or two days of gaming, plus there are maybe 5 or 6 enemy types you kill en masse, wave after wave, ad nauseum - I get bored.

Still, I recognize it is popular and can see its appeal for people who love co-op gaming, but it is simply not for me at all and I will not buy the sequel unless it one days drops in price to under $10, because that is how much gameplay I will get out of it.

What bothers me is that Valve has unearthed a dirty little secret that I fear will ruin the company's great reputation - it is easier and more profitable to make a short little game with no story and minimal content than to make an epic game like Half-Life. They churned out Left 4 Dead 2 in one year and stand to sell millions and millions of copies, so what is the motivation to make truly engaging single-player experiences?

I adore the Half-Life series, like most gamers do, because of its insane production value and awesome story - plus, the gameplay is excellent. I wish Valve focused more on pushing Half-Life 2: Episode 3 out the door and continuing that series, but I cannot blame them for going where the money is.

Valve ruined their reputation with whom?   Certainly not the millions of people who bought the game...

Uh, companies are in business to make money....

, so what is the motivation to make truly engaging single-player experiences?

If you are so motivated, go for it!

Yep, that's fair enough, you've got your opinion. Others would be buying it to play with their friends and to have fun. Although I am biased, I am much a Valve fanboy as a Bioware fanboy. And it brings me joy to see both of them releasing their games in the same month.

Well, I kinda liked Left 4 Dead, but in all honesty, I feel L4D2 is too soon. It's like finding out your girlfriend who you broke up with 5 days ago already has a new boyfriend she's going steady with for 2 months. Image IPB

I'll let them release their game and I'll just say "no, had my fill" and settle for Borderlands instead. Since I feel that is the proper competition to rebel with.

I have been playing Borderlands for over a week now i'm a lvl 30 hunter. It's pure fun to pick up quests and knock them out one buy one while picking up loot, I still gasp when i pick up a new Purple or orange sniper rifle. You fight the same enemies over and over again. So far all i have seen is Generic birds, bugs and bandits. But the landscape is handcrafted and varies enough to keep exploring interesting. I haven't even tried co-op yet.

I didn't play L4D, I am getting L4D2, which will be my first taste of the franchise. Once again, you are entitled to your opinion. In New Zealand There are showing the ad for Borderlands indicating it's FPS and RPG put together. I don't feel as if they are putting up a competition for DA:O and they've clearly indicated in their ads that this is a co-op game. In the ad it says playing with your Amigos. So I think they are going against L4D2. And people who are most likely to get DA:O are people who are mainly interested in single player experiences. And also it's all about business. I see nothing wrong with Borderland's developers wanting to attract the RPG crowd if it brings in the monies.

btw, you did the right thing, you've moved on with your life with your new girlfriend.

My friend actually bought a copy of Borderlands for me as a birthday present. It's one of the few games we'll play together, as I like strategy and single player RPGs and he likes shooters and MMOGs.

Highly recommend it if you like shooters. It's not a true RPG of course, as you really can't interact with NPCs or experience deep customization. The skill trees are fun though, and so is the random loot. It's actually closer to Diablo or Hellgate London than any Bioware game.

I think you'll be really happy with L4D2 if how happy I was with L4D1 is any indication. =]
I certainly am not going to preach others to "avoid L4D2 at all costs" by any means, but it feels like a bit of a punt on my wallet. And I really loved the characters so needing to get aquinted with a new group just weirds me out, is all.

As for the gf comment, the summer is a long way away, dude. :? Lots of gaming to do until then. =]

This game is the bastard off-spring of Diablo, Fallout 3 and COD. It IS fun, at least for the first play through, but it's incredibly easy, and the end is rather anti-climactic. Also, one thing that always bothered me, is that the weaker enemies, had fairly good AI, they would take cover, pop out and shoot and so forth. The stronger enemies were just plain Stupid.

Also, there are no dificulty settings, which I found anoying.

I'm enjoying Borderlands. It's great for what it is. Right on the back of the box it says the roleplay is mainly for the character progression, not necessarily the story. Or thats what I took it to mean.

I don't know,I love Left 4 Dead and have no problems their coming out with the sequel already.

Then again I get most of my enjoyment out of these games with playing co-op with my husband. I think thats where most of these games really shine, is co-op.
