DA2 Pre-Installed for the 8th. Cannot select "High Res Textures"....

Basically, there is more difference between 'vanilla' DA2 and Console DA2 when it comes to graphic, but they decided to then do a completely different texture pack for DX11, which i don't know of any games ever doing before.
I guess it's now logical to complain that a bonus like that needs a while to DL. Having it as a patch is good too, as you can DL it at a friend if you have provider problem.

I wish people would stop complaining. Seriously, if this bothers you, you need to reconsider your outlook on life. An optional, FREE download is not good reason to complain.
Thanks, from me, Bioware!

The damn textures come as a separate download now. It boggles the mind. Has any other video game ever done this before? How much of a rush job is this game exactly?
Yes. High-res textures for Drakensang weren't released until patch 1.02 in the original German version. KOTOR2 had separate downloads for high-res cutscenes, and the music was originally 11khz mono until Obsidian released a high quality music pack.

Unfortunately the words "everyones a critic" ring true so anytime a new Bioware game comes through everyone will judge it and complain about every little detail. People were not thrilled about the textures so they made a texture pack you'd think in theory that would make these people happy but no now they want to moan about "Why wasn't it there in the first place EA rushed it! EA sucks" etc etc. They didn't have to add a texture pack if they didn't want to but they threw PC players a bone so they can make the most out of what their harware is capable of. Unfortunately for some PC players that is not enough since they have a complex and feel like the world owes them something because they game on a PC.

Eh? Was sure this was just the High Detail settings that we knew about but was just not included on the disk (or digital copies since both are the same).Moondoggie wrote...

Anyway, I've no problems with this as long as there's no hassle with installing it.
But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be critical of games either. Noding our heads and essentially being "yes men" fanboys to Bioware or any devs game design choices isn't helping anyone at all.

Yeah I'd like to know this too. I'd hate to download the thing only to find that an hour later that Steam now has the patch up and running. I don't se any problem with putting this up like any other Steam Update.Neon Kitten wrote...

It'll be a manual download - you will be able to grab it here on the site similar to a patch for DAO. It will come with its own installer etc.
Fernando, is there any chance that the hi-res textures update will be added to the Steam version as an automatic update? It would be trivial to do so, and would ensure that Steam users (who are used to NOT having to manually install updates) would get the full PC quality experience.
I know EA hates Steam; please let's have Bioware show some love for it

No, I understand what DX11 allows and read that blog about the features implemented in the game. The post I was responding to was claiming the texture pack was going to require DX11, which is false. When people make such claims, it spreads and you end up with misinformed folks all over the place.

Well, I am a PC gamer with a high end rig (I also have a PS3 and 360). I don't think platform devotion should excuse irrational whining. But, I digress. I am on an internet forum for a video game...so I should expect that behavior.
On another note...can't wait for the game! Going to download the pack Tuesday morning before work and get home a bit early to fire it up on highest settings.

Guess I've never paid to this type of thing before--does Bioware only answer questions during the week?
nope, but since Mike didn't know for sure, i don't think we are going to get an official announcement or more information before Monday. Plus, it's the weekend, i doubt any of them will get up at 6 or 7 in the morning just to answer questions here.
On the weekend they usually only hand out information they are aware of, like Peter Thomas commenting on what he remembered from his own work/gaming experience. Aside from that they tell us to wait for the official announcement.

... the texture pack *does* require DX11. Or at least the High-res texture pack that's not included in the CDs.
That's the whole point, the high res texture patch is something that can oly be handled by DX11 capable cards.

Having had ME2 and DAO on Steam, I can probably assume that this will be a download much like any DLC that you will have to get from this site seperately. This isn't a "patch" after all. It is an optional supplement for people with higher end PCs. Therefore, it is more of a DLC than a patch.

No it doesn't. Can you post a dev comment that confirms this? You realize that high resolution textures are not something that is a DX11 exclusive feature, right? The Blog link you posted does NOT confirm this. It would be strange to restrict them to DX11 only as it has nothing to do with DirectX processing. The only thing High Res textures would technically require is more RAM and more drive storage space.
Whether you have a DX9 card, a DX10 card or a DX11 card, you can still change the resolution of the game, right?
Here is a good post to explain texture resolutions: http://udn.epicgames...ndSettings.html
Keep in mind, the requirements aren't married to DirectX versions but more dependant on the GPU texture processing power and card memory.

Higher texture size of course uses more video RAM, and if your card doesn't have enough the game won't run properly. Most likely you'll have to have at least 1GB of memory in your graphics card. This is of course just an educated guess. But I wouldn't hold my breath for great textures if your card has less than 1GB of memory. Most likely you'll need at least the "recommended" system specs to use the high res pack.

The only reason DX11 would be required is if Bioware had put an artificial check for it. As it has been said, simply using larger sized textures does not require DX11. You could mod better textures to DAO too without problems.

On a similar note, I just installed Grand Theft Auto 4 for the PC. I have a GTX 570 that has 1280MB of dedicated RAM. GTA 4, a DirectX 9 game, ate up most of it with High Res textures pumped up and with features maxed. So, the RAM on a gpu is very important.

Yeah, I know it is a direct port, but maxing out my card is CRAZY. That game was screaming for some PC optimization.

Some people are looking at this the wrong way, Bioware was under no obligation to give us high res textures.
Did Dragon Age Origins have high res textures? No
Did Mass Effect 2 have high res textures? No
Did Fallout 3 have high res textures? No
Multi platform games seldom have high res textures, you people should be thanking Bioware, not complaining imo.
As most people are not going to want to read through the whole topic...
High Resolution Textures FAQ:
- Is it free?
Yes.
- Do I have to download it?
Yes. It's not included on the disk as it was finalised before the HR textures were finished. (Sorry dialup users/those of you with internet caps!)
- When can it be downloaded?
Most likely this coming Monday (7th March).
- How do I download it?
You get it from the BSN in the same way as the Origins patches. (So you will likely find when you put your mouse over the "Games" top menu there will be a new section for Dragon Age 2, then under theat Game Patches.
- Is it going to require Direct X 11?
No. Textures are not Direct X version specific - you will however need more hard disk space (required to install them) and likely a reasonably modern graphics card for everything to run smoothly with the high resolution textures.

I made quite a fuss about this earlier in this thread, and now I'm thinking that perhaps I misunderstood the purpose of this 'patch' after all.
