Found this dev blog about it. This explains a lot.

Thanks! :)

I just read it and indeed, I think they were talking about the "Graphic Detail" settings.   From this read, I'm assuming everyone with enough GPU memory will be able to use High res textures.

DX10+ will be able to use High settings (from the blog)

The game has hundreds of spell effects, the rendering of which is
greatly improved on high end PC video cards. On the high detail setting
(requires DX10 or better hardware), the game will smooth particle edges
so they blend better with the environment (without hard edges at the
contact point).

DX11 cards will be the ones at very high (from blog)

Most of the dynamic lighting features, including cloud shadows and the
extra lights on spell effects, will work on DirectX 10 hardware. The
extra shadows from dynamic lights require the very high detail level
(which is only available with DirectX 11 hardware
).

Great read btw, thanks again for the link

So If I have nVidia8800 gt, which is dx10 hardware, but using Windows Xp, will I be able to set it up on High?

It should enable the option in graphic settings to "enable" high res textures. I think the "low/medium/high" options speak to DirectX processing. Most games allow you to choose texture quality separately. I think someone mentioned in one of these threads that the high res texture option was a check box that was grayed out unless you downloaded this pack.

yes and in fact in the demo i felt that low medium and high shared the same textures....
i suppose that low medium etc concern things like shadows, lights reflexes etc

Technically, yes.  But your framerates may vary.

*EDIT*  Missed the Win XP part...so medium only!

I made quite a fuss about this earlier in this thread, and now I'm thinking that perhaps I misunderstood the purpose of this 'patch' after all.

Yes. Low/Medium/High/Ultra-High enable/disable various features of your graphics card.

High resolution textures are nothing to do with your Direct X version, they are generally cleaner/sharper/better looking/more detailed etc. versions of things such as armor, weapons, buildings etc.

No, actually. Windows XP does not support Direct X 10 officially.

DX10 is available on Vista and Windows 7 only. As such, if the High setting is for DX10/11 only, no, he can't.

Fernando Melo, would steam user also have to download these High Res texture manually or would it be like an auto update in the steam client?

Ah, missed that they had XP.  Well that pretty much ends the discussion then.  ;)

I can't understand all the big amount of whine in this thread, Dragon Age 2 already looks awesome in High settings (from the demo), and Very High will be present on the physical disc (only if you have a DirectX 11 Videocard), so for the very few that, like me, can afford to play with the High Resolution Textures they're doing them additionally and releasing them for download 1 day before the US launch and 3 days before the EU launch and YET this is a problem?
You should just lay down a little the whine whistle and think about your complain, and appreciate the dedication that the studio, Bioware, is putting towards US, the customers, since they could have done 2 things: 1) give us the game as it is or 2) release it at a later date, a month or two, becouse they had to finish working on the high resolution textures.

As for myself I prefer the way they did, since not everyone can use them, they're doing a lot of work for a minority, and as for myself I thank them a lot for that!

But are the "Low/Medium/High/Ultra-High" still present in DA2? Can't check the demo, I removed it.

Yes, they are a separate extra option, higher than the Very High already present on the disc, so let me tell you :P you made a big mistake canceling your order, biggest if it was a Signature Edition which you can't order anymore :)

Yes, but the demo has not Very High textures within it, just up to High, if you try enabling Very High in the configuration utility, prepare to see a game with blackness and wierd polygons that would hang or crash soon ;) tried it myself

So, basically, it's not the same case as ME1->ME2 in this respect?

Well... if we get the regular "Low/Medium/High(/Ultra-High)" PLUS higher resolution textures... then I owe some peoples an apology, hi hi. :D

That's the case Gabriel, the High Resolution Package is an extra, even higher, resolution textures selection :P

Depending on the number of them and the resolution they decide to go with, it could be multiple GBs.

got a somewhat related question about game settings, resolutions, etc to the 'experts' out there.

This is my first time playing a PC game in years on my new rig. I got fraps to see my FPS, etc. Is there such a thing as a fps 'sweet spot' for games such as these because sometimes changing a setting may increase your fps for example but the visual changes are not noticeable to the human eye. So my question is, with DX11, hi-rez pack, etc should I be aiming for a certain fps or is it all up to the invidividual and what looks/plays good?

It'll be a manual download - you will be able to grab it here on the site similar to a patch for DAO.  It will come with its own installer etc.

Fernando, is there any chance that the hi-res textures update will be added to the Steam version as an automatic update? It would be trivial to do so, and would ensure that Steam users (who are used to NOT having to manually install updates) would get the full PC quality experience.

I know EA hates Steam; please let's have Bioware show some love for it :)

Yeah I'd like to know this too. I'd hate to download the thing only to find that an hour later that Steam now has the patch up and running. I don't se any problem with putting this up like any other Steam Update.

The issue I would see is that very few people will actually use the DX11 features, making it silly to force everyone on Steam to download a GB or two of stuff they will never use.  Dragon Age players are used to coming here for DLC, I see no reason they can't come here for their DX11 textures.

Assuming these require DX11, which most people seem to think they do.

Optimal framerate is a subjective thing... depends on the player.  Some people think 30fps is fine and some want 60fps.  Some people want even higher than that, and shockingly there was a Mass Effect 2 thread a while back that showed a lot of people were playing that game at like 10fps, which is baffling to me.

As a PC gamer for almost 20 years I can tell you that all you need to do is find your sweet-spot, what you personally like and find acceptable, and work from there.
