I've downloaded the beta drivers already dated March 2 (not installed yet, waiting to see if they'll release a WHQL version before tomorrow).

http://www.nvidia.co...aspx?lang=en-us (this links to the "beta & archived" drivers of nVidia site) in case you have a nVidia card.

cheers...

I use a utility called Device Manager. It scans my hardware and downloads the appropriate driver updates. It downloaded a new driver for my ATI card this morning. I'll do another check this evening to see if this is the one for the high res package.

I'll wait for finished drivers, I do have the current latest drivers installed, I however got flickering GUI in DA2 DEMO on my desktop with a 8800 card, while I had no glitches on laptop using 8600, same driver version (266) apart for being for mobile/netbook. Hopefully that is one of the issues adressed in the new drivers, or retail version of the game either way.

Fernando indicated that the patch would come with its own installer, so it *should* detect where your game is installed and install the textures in their proper place.

It's very early in the day for Bioware people, like 10AM. Chill out.

Just posting in this topic so I don't have to find it again later. Was hoping the very high textures would be out by now...

Suprisingly small. But I guess it just updates some of the textures.

To be clear, this is not a patch. It is a separate optional pack of textures for anyone interested.

It will work fine on Steam version, but since it is not a patch it will not auto-update via Steam - you'll need to manually grab the high res texture pack from here and install it.

As posted above, the link is 'live' already, but we'll roll out the formal announce for this shortly - the web team is putting up all DLCs links etc, so this will pop out later today as soon as they can.

Fernando-

Do you know if there is going to be a version of the Pack put up for the Mac version of the game?  The current one links to a .exe file.

I've wondered that as well capable heart. I would have assumed hi res textures would always be ready and not needed to complete after the game's gone to press, but I guess there must be more to it. Anyone know the answer? And for the record, I dont mind one bit they didnt come with the dl or disc, I'm just happy to have them unlike ME2.

A texture artist always starts with a high resolution format
when creating textures, usually either a 2048x2048 image or perhaps 1024x1024.
After the artist finishes the texture, they reduce the size to fit whatever
standards the console versions require, perhaps 50% or maybe 25% of the
original size. The original source texture image is archived and never deleted.

So you are correct that BioWare didn’t have to go back and
do any actual editing of existing textures for this high resolution pack. They merely
saved their original high-res images in their original size (or maybe slightly
smaller, as is most likely since a 1gig download is too small to contain truly
high-res textures unless DA2 consists of very few textures which is also
possible given the limited scope of the game).

However, DX11 allows the use of displacement maps, which are
separate textures that actually modify the 3D geometry of a scene. The classic
example is a cobblestone road texture. The console versions will merely have a totally
flat road to walk on with a nice semi-realistic cobblestone pattern painted
onto the road (the texture). But DX11 PC users will get actual bumpy
cobblestone because the displacement map tells the engine to render all the
cracks and spaces between the cobblestone as realistic 3D divots and crevices.
This is possible because DX11 allows tessellation. Tessellation is basically
the ability to take a simple 3D model and break it up into very high polygon
parts that can be modified by a 2D heightmap texture (the displacement map).

So I assume the reason this pack wasn’t ready for shipping
the PC version is because the texture artists hadn’t yet completed all the
separate displacement maps, since they were probably too busy finishing the
console versions. Just my guess.

Also, note that absolutely anyone can benefit from the
higher resolution regular textures this pack provides. However, the DX11
displacement maps can’t be used by non-DX11 graphics cards but will do no harm.

Note: everything said above was said without looking at the actual texture pack. I could be wrong about minor details.

there is an entire thread now discussing the hi-res texture pack. Let's take the discussion there, please. Thank you.

End of line.
