Also worth noting that there are new ATI and nVidia drivers due Monday (or Tuesday) I believe, which will increase performance and stability for DA2 on DirectX11 cards.

Woot!

For Steam, is it going to be a manual download? I cant remember if Steam doesnt you tampering with the core files...

Why didn't you just put it on the disc?

they should do this with more games...
im assuming they didnt put it on the disk because it would have called for an extra disk and EA was trying to save money or they had to tweak the very high res textures before releasing them on monday... all guessing though on my part...

Probably because they didn't finish them until after the game was sealed.

Yep, same reason day 1 DLC isn't on the disc.  This is all content we were able to complete after the game disc was locked and sent for certification.

So this extends to the retail version of DA2 as well as the digital distributed? The higher res textures are not on the physical disk?

The contents of the disk are the same of the digital edition so I guess not.

sweet, thanks for the quick reply Fernando.

Am I right to assume it'll be automatically downloaded by the game? or will we have to do it manually?

It'll be a manual download - you will be able to grab it here on the site similar to a patch for DAO.  It will come with its own installer etc.

Do you have any idea how large a D/L it will be?

You're joking, right?

I mean, has the game industry REALLY sunk this low? I can live with day one DLC not being on the disc - it's extra material, after all.

But we have to DOWNLOAD the high rez textures?

This is a core part of the game, and it's not included on the disc. The mind boggles.

I swear no other industry I can think of gets away with the BS the video game industry does.

"Oh, we'll sell you this new car, but we don't include feature x, you'll have to get that from the factory. And if it doesn't work, you can't return it. We might fix what's wrong with it in a few months, if you're lucky. You can download that fix, because you have limitless patience and bandwidth. Oh, and you don't actually own the car we're selling you even though we're charging you full price, you're renting it! And don't even think about re-selling the car, we've tied it to your address - no one else will ever be able to drive it. Oh, and there's this little 8 page contract included inside the glove box. We won't let you read it before you buy the car, but we're sure you'll agree to all the terms and conditions. If you don't, you can always try returning it. (Good luck with that, though.)"

The demo was buggy as all get out. This makes me really fear that the actual game will be the same. If you didn't have time to put the textures on the disc, what else didn't you have time for? Beta testing? QC?

Sorry, but this kind of thing really ticks me off. <_<

I hear ya...

I think this is the first time it happened to me although I remember other games that took months of patching before being playable (not naming names but I'm sure anyone can think of a game -- in my case it rhymes with Gothic 3 ;) )

But textures?  That's a new one.  Specially for such a highly anticipated game as DA2.  I'm expecting a LOT of flak coming this direction about this.  I'm assuming this is for the PC version only.

On a positive side of things, we *are* getting the high res textures.   I thought the graphics on the demo were impressive, although missing tessellation+perhaps other features since it wasn't DX11 ready, but still amazing and that was with the "normal" textures? Can't wait to see the difference.

I'd personally put it as an auto-download patch myself, but I'll take the game as it comes

1) Demo is a much older build than the final release of course there will be issues.
2) Not everyone has DX11 ready GPU or Windows 7
3) Be glad there is even High res texture they could have just put the game out with the same textures as the console like most developers have done.

People will just whine and complain about anything and everything. Is it so hard to click download and install?

Wow, thanks for all the info. And it all sounds incredibly cool, much thanks for getting it done. High res is always appreciated on the pc.

If you have a DirectX 11 video card, then sure.

Macs don't use DirectX, they use OpenGL as far as I know.

My card is dx11 capable (under windows) so it's more a question if the Mac version supports using these packs. I woud assume so.
