Not even sure you *need* DirectX 11 for the high res textures. It'll probably work with DX9 or OpenGL as well. (Just guessing here though).
Devs have said you need DX11 to play higher than Medium settings so.....No?

My card is dx11 capable (under windows) so it's more a question if the Mac version supports using these packs. I woud assume so.
Does Mac OS support Direct X? I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

I think you can go up to High without DX11. You need DX11 to use Very High though.

Textures are just textures, they work over any DirectX, if they're gonna lock that option under DirectX9 or 10 it will be because of hardware sellers who want to push DirectX11 cards. I don't see other reasons. But I am almost certain that everyone will be able to run that pack.Brawne wrote...
I have DirectX 10 card (GTS 250), wonder if you can run high res textures on DirectX 10 or it will be only for DirectX 11 cards?
(please Bioware tell me that I am right

I missed that thread so I might be totally wrong here. My take is that textures are just that, textures. Graphic Detail Setting is something different though -- that's the setting that goes up to "very high" (low, medium, high, very high).
Perhaps the devs were talking about that? if you have a link to the thread, I'll check it out.

Actually you may be right I misread your post, I was thinking the settings and not the actual textures.

Should I even bother with them for my nVidia 9600GT or are they suited for the more powerful graphic cards out there?

Also worth noting that there are new ATI and nVidia drivers due Monday (or Tuesday) I believe, which will increase performance and stability for DA2 on DirectX11 cards.
Now if Acer would only let me use ATI updates. Darn Laptop......

Found this dev blog about it. This explains a lot.
Thanks!
I just read it and indeed, I think they were talking about the "Graphic Detail" settings. From this read, I'm assuming everyone with enough GPU memory will be able to use High res textures.
DX10+ will be able to use High settings (from the blog)
The game has hundreds of spell effects, the rendering of which is
greatly improved on high end PC video cards. On the high detail setting
(requires DX10 or better hardware), the game will smooth particle edges
so they blend better with the environment (without hard edges at the
contact point).
DX11 cards will be the ones at very high (from blog)
Most of the dynamic lighting features, including cloud shadows and the
extra lights on spell effects, will work on DirectX 10 hardware. The
extra shadows from dynamic lights require the very high detail level
(which is only available with DirectX 11 hardware).
Great read btw, thanks again for the link

Pisses me off as well, but only because I have to do that extra step if I want all the optional bells and whistles (I'd prefer not having to do that). But to be fair, the textures we're talking about are not a core part of the game. These are glamor textures, designed for higher end cards with DX11. The game will still run on high without them. To further your car analogy, these would be like downloading heated leather seats, or a GPS navigation systemwyvvern wrote...

Yep, same reason day 1 DLC isn't on the disc. This is all content we were able to complete after the game disc was locked and sent for certification.
You're joking, right?
I mean, has the game industry REALLY sunk this low? I can live with day one DLC not being on the disc - it's extra material, after all.
But we have to DOWNLOAD the high rez textures?
This is a core part of the game, and it's not included on the disc. The mind boggles.
Have you ever bought a new car? That's pretty much exactly how it works. No, wait.... it's actually WORSE with a car purchase, because you have to pay for these extras, and not only is the car you bought tied to your address by government mandate, but you also have to pay personal property tax on it every year, depending on where you live.I swear no other industry I can think of gets away with the BS the video game industry does.
"Oh, we'll sell you this new car, but we don't include feature x, you'll have to get that from the factory. And if it doesn't work, you can't return it. We might fix what's wrong with it in a few months, if you're lucky. You can download that fix, because you have limitless patience and bandwidth. Oh, and you don't actually own the car we're selling you even though we're charging you full price, you're renting it! And don't even think about re-selling the car, we've tied it to your address - no one else will ever be able to drive it. Oh, and there's this little 8 page contract included inside the glove box. We won't let you read it before you buy the car, but we're sure you'll agree to all the terms and conditions. If you don't, you can always try returning it. (Good luck with that, though.)"

No the game does NOT use OpenGL in any way (unless you're on a NON PC platform). On PCs it's a staunch DX 9, 10.2, or 11 game

Consoles can't use them, they are stuck with DX9 and Medium settings, never to get anything better. But of course because of this, PC textures get put on the back burner, only to be released a week after release... **** is bloody lame.
Also who wants to bet some young modder will blow away Biowares "high-res" textures?
