Ah, another one. No obligation to push the strengths of a platform means flak from reviews and gamers and that is bad for business and ruins your reputation. Ask Square-Enix or Capcom.
DA:O looked about a million and one times better on the PC that the consoles.
ME2 the same.
Fallout 3 is so much better as vanilla that it's not even funny. As a modded game, it kills Crysis in a few scenes.
PC versions always get game assets at least one notch above the console, good ports give two or even three and higher resolution + AA and AF do the rest of the magic. But since the game went gold a long time ago without these assets that we will download, I guess the term "gone gold" means something different in today's industry than it did even a few years ago.
I understand your point that a game that's "gone gold" nowadays means something very different than say 10-15 years ago in the days of Baldur's Gate for example. I'm sure you know that games have evolved quite a bit since then from a gameplay and technical perspective, and in today's world, launch day DLC and patches are almost to be expected.
Is that a good thing? No I don't think a half-assed product should be released, but with increasing technical requirements and decreasing product development cycles, there are exponentially more ways something can go wrong. This is not just happening in the video game industry, just look at the mobile electronics industry: Apple's iPhone, Palm Pre, etc., were all plagued with bugs initially.
Of course that analogy is a bit misleading, since DA2 is not actually lacking in required functionality, but rather missing an aesthetic upgrade.
Like I've said earlier though, there are no standards/rules/laws as to what a video game must include before being classified as "gone gold", so unless they're repeatedly doing this or charging for it, there's little cause to complaint IMO.

Wow...people are actually complaining about this? I've been a PC gamer for quite some time and this is nothing new. It's free you entitled babies. Oh no, you might bruise a finger clicking that extra download link! IT'S ALL A CONSPIRACY!

AVG will probably detect it as failaware. DO NOT TOUCH! It will leave you brittle and open to a DLC attack!

Unfortunately not. Some of the cheaper providers charge people extra if they exceed a monthly limit, usually around 2GB. If the hi-res texture package is bigger than that, it will cause those people to exceed their limit and having to pay more to their ISP.DTKT wrote...

If you have a 2GB monthly limit, then it's bad luck but I dont want to see devs limiting content because of such contstraints. If you dont have the bandwith, dont download it.

Me? I'm grateful we even have something above 640x480 res.
Though the scrolling list that describes the UI was clearly made for that resolution (ie: consoles).

Me, neither. But they could've slightly delayed the release to put it on the disc, instead of letting everyone download it. 3 weeks would've been enough to include the texture patch on the disc.DTKT wrote...

I can understand why though people would be annoyed at having to do this, would those people prefer the games release to be delayed by a month so that the files could be included?
I can understand why it's not an automatic update for Steam as most peoples computer cannot handle high resolution textures. So that extra downloading could prevent those users from playing the game until the unnecessary (for them) patch is downloaded.
I'm going to buy a new graphics card so I can see DA:2 in it's full glory!

Not really in order for the game to be able to be release on the 360 and PS3 at the same time it has to undergo a certification process which takes alot of time I am told. If they held off and locked the game after the Hi-res was avalible your looking at way more then 3 weeks for a delay as the certifications would still need to be madeNighteye2 wrote...

So doing this would have ment that the Consoles would ethier have a later release then the PC at that point or they would need to delay the PC release date

Is this a ****ing joke?
The damn textures come as a separate download now. It boggles the mind. Has any other video game ever done this before? How much of a rush job is this game exactly?
Not very encouraging, is it? The demo's a buggy mess and looks just the faintest grade above hideous. The functionality to enable high res textures is built within the PC version of the game, but it's gimped in its shipped state. I've never heard of anything like this, ever. I hope, if they didn't include textures, they at least fixed the horrible, error-prone tactics menu from the demo. Really, they didn't bother to fix the demo before they released it, so I can't imagine the shipped state of the game is much better, especially since the textures weren't completed before pressing.
This scares me. A lot. And the worst part is that Bioware doesn't really seem to care.

Other than that though I don't see a huge deal, assuming the file is up for download before the game is out. If I have to play on medium settings for a few days that will be SUPER annoying.
