just an acknowledgement of this thread from one of them to show they are at least listening would be nice.

I hate to say this, by Mike was acting like a shrewd politician at some (note: I say some, not all) of the questions thrown at him. Answering them, but at the same time not really answering them. The auto attack question was one example, he went on about how they were different under the surface, but similar fundamentally. Well, ok, so there is an autoattack option, but is it a fire and forget kind of thing, or do we have to do it for each enemy?

Ive heard multiple reports that it is in the radial menu rather than menu options, in which case it should be hot-keyable. 5 quick access talents and the hot keyed auto attack is an acceptable work around.

Someone on the gamespot forums said that simply holding down A similar to Diablo would work instead of button mashing, but alas he was not telling the truth. It does nothing.

I found most of his answers unsatisfying. Did you hear the rest of the Q&A?
(Paraphrasing by the way)

Q:Are there finishers in the game like Origins? Or are they restricted to cutscenes?
A:The finishers in Origins was definitely candid, although we have tried to work it out, it's not something we could fit in to the fast pace-ness of the fighting, but you still get beautiful cutscene finshers like in the demo with the Ogre (Which wasn't satisfying whatsoever) But it doesn't mean we have completely thrown the feature away. We are continuing to see how we could match it with the new mechanics....

wth? the game is out in a couple days, so they are pretty much saying, "we didn't neglect it forever, it will probably be in the sequel"

Yes, I also found that Mike's answers in a few instances were very politician like... Come on Bioware give it to us straight. On the consoles is auto-attack a universal setting that only needs to be selected once? We all know you're in love with "push a button and something awesome happens" on the console, but many of your console fan base aren't interested in button mashing.

This is a yes or no question...  I know someone can answer it for us, your raving fans and loyal customers...  you can do it!

I will not be buying this game if there is no auto-attack. I was bored with the button mashing just in the demo, I couldn't imagine playing the full game like that. Thank god for gamefly.

I replayed the demo this morning to see what it would be like over 30 hours and my conclusion was it would be pretty horrible.
It's the most button mashing game I've played this generation I think, if we are talking about a single button.

Guys, as I said before, you probably won't have to button mash even if there is no universal toggle. Just sacrifice a quick talent. I know, not optimal, but still better.

On the console version of the game you can assign skills / actions to the 3 buttons that surround x or a... so if Auto-Attack isn't a universal toggle but is in the radial menu, you might be able to assign it to a button on the controller, referred to above as a quick talent. So button X is for one time basic attack, and button Y is for auto-attack... not a great solution but better than opening the radial for every enemy. Of course we're assuming that it's there and it's quick talent assignable.

From the Xbox 360 Gamefaqs Board:

"No auto attack that ive found anywhere in teh options."

Bioware- is it possible is it possible to patch this in? I really don't want to wait until Dragon Age 3 to have this problem fixed. :(

There is apparently a pirated version of the game going around that is an older version... so this is still just speculation...

I wish we knew the answer to the Universal or per Enemy auto-attack toggle question definitively... Oh why oh why isn't there a 12am launch in my hometown?

Verdict!

Consoles:

* Press A to perform basic attack.

* Open radial menu and press A to issue attack order, character will auto-attack.

* Non-controlled characters will behave based on tactics.

PC:

* Right click to issue attack order, character will auto-attack.

* Non-controlled characters will behave based on tactics.

By Mike Laidlaw, very old thread though..

Yeah that was 6 months ago. Who knows if they have kept their word.

I have been thinking on this, and I have come to the decision that, after another go at the demo, it wont be button mashing. You press it something like 4 times every 3 seconds, so its in no way physically tiresome on the thumb. Its the mentally tiring thing that some will have difficulty getting over. In a way, it will be the same as brfore in origins, but with the added button pressing every second or so. It will be just as tactical, if you want it to be.

Been thinking about this for awhile and if it is in the radial menu, I think I'm okay with it. It may actually force me to be more strategic. I just don't want to wear out my controller or get a thumb cramp, those dual wielding rogues are ridiciously fast.

So Auto Attack is in yet isn't a toggle from what I gather?
Eh oh well, don't mind the button mashing. And most people secretly mashed the button in origins anyways.

On 360 you could map certain things to the d-pad, instead of having to select from the radial.

Well I hope its fixed in the full game so that when you switch to another character Hawk doesn't just stand there looking like a fool.

It only concerns the character you're controlling, as soon as you switch to another character Hawke will auto-attack or whatever you set in tactics. Still, it means that there will always be one character doing nothing unless you repeatedly press the exact same button.

Some did, but we got no answer to our question...
The question answered in the chat was "can you enable button mashing on PC" and the answer was "No, you can't"(+some filler sentences...)
But this answer has nothing to do with the thread...

Hawk didn't autoattack anything in the demo, even when I had the tactics set, he just stood there looking like a tool.

Edit: And then he died.

Strange, 'cause he does auto-attack in my demo (PS3) when he's not controlled directly

Any new info on this yet? I'd like to get the pre-order bonuses, but I don't want standard combat to be more complicated than the PC auto-attack system. Can you automatically continue autoattacking after using an ability?

I disagree. Pressing A over and over to activate the limited set of animations for the standard attack is rubbish. The enemies don't even react to yoyur attacks until they die. There is no blocking, there is no physical sign of the enemies being hit. Just your sword passing through them over and over and over and over until they die. Weaksuace.
