I'm starting my second playthrough of Mass Effect, but I don't want to romance anyone since I'm going to be only romancing Tali in ME2. However, from what I've heard other people say, it is supposedly impossible to just be friends with your Ashley and Liara. Is there any way to make it so you don't end up getting stuck with a ninja romance with them? Also, if a ninjamance happens, but you turn them down for sex, it won't still count as a relationship and carry on into the next game, will it?

In my experience, you HAVE to ****** them off in the scene were the Normandy is grounded (before talking to Anderson), meaning you have to avoid the "almost kiss" scene by picking only Renegade responses.

If you get the "almost kiss" then the Love Interest is fixed and you won't be able to cancel it, even if you refuse the sex scene later.

Be a jerk. Worked with Inception and now he's stuck with bland ol'Tali.

There are plenty of chances to shoot them both down before the Normandy gets grounded and the almost kiss scene never even happens.

If you're meta gaming just so you don't have a romance going into ME2 the easiest thing is to not to talk to them at all outside the briefing room scenes. And if you want to be extra sure you can always leave Ashley to die on Virmire.

She's racist. That's reason enough for me to kill Batarians and to let her die in Virmire.

This is bad advice. Just tell thet you're not interested. It's that easy.

Miranda isn't considered Human? Anyway, Im staying with Cerberus (Human dominance) so it's very ironic.

Kill Ashley on Virmire, or just never ever talk to Liara or Ash.

Oh man... I keep accidentally getting in romances (with all ME1 LIs) every time I play...

Liara is easy to avoid, just tell her you're not interested when she brings it up. Ashley and Kaidan... you have be a jerk to them at least once. With Kaidan at least I know there's one point where he specifically asks if he's "out of line" and you can tell him so. That should cut off that one. Not sure if Ashley has a similar line.

Because I've seen the Evil Dead movies, and I'm just not attracted to genderbenders. Insert boomstick joke here. <shrug>

I've had problems with Liara's romance before. The bottom-right "I'm not interested" option was glitched, and it activated the romance with no way out - the conversation after that only had three different ways to say yes. I reloaded and ignored the conversation, but she still approached Shepard at the Normandy lockdown scene, and even though I chose all of the Renegade responses and made Shepard yell at her, she still almost kissed him. He wasn't even nice to her during the game.

The safe solution is to recruit Liara last (which means the subject of romance won't come up) and leave Ashley on Virmire, or just don't talk to them. My trap-romanced Shepard was going for Tali in ME2 as well.

Hmm... I have been able to avoid ME1 romances in ME1.

And in ME2, if you choose the option on wheel on the right; after finishing Horizon, then there seem to be no issues in ME2 about ME1 romances. Nevertheless that is with Shep's that did not romance them in ME1.

Ashley - first conversation
"You're out of line"

Liara - second conversation, after Liara expresses her interest in Shepard you have three options for a response to her:
"No, I just want to be friends"
and then...
"I'm not interested in you in that way"
no romance = I think it is quite obvious ^_^

Kaidan - first conversation
"gave up waiting for the good part"
It's a bit harsh, but it ends the romance .

I have to admit, avoiding romances is a little harder than I thought it would be. It wasn't until relatively recently I tried playing a male Shepard that didn't romance Ashley. At once point I told her via the neutral response that as her commanding officer we were too close, it wasn't mean and it was straightforward. She seemed to get the message and even told me to "have fun" when talking about my relationship with Liara. But she still showed up later during the love triangle scene. I was a little baffled at the time. "But you JUST told me you got the message!"
