There are no black people in Ferelden, your just a dark skined white guy.

 What?

Is that some kind of joke?

Because if it isn't, I would like to know what this statement is actually supposed to mean.
Anyone, please feel free to answer.

I think they're saying that they don't have the features that people of african origin have on our planet. "black people" in DA are just white people with light mocha colored skin.

Basically like anime characters.

Ah okay, thanks.

I guess I can see how one might come to this conclusion.
Although I would argue that "African origin" is a pretty broad term that encompass a wide range of facial features and skin colors, some of which can actually be recreated with the character creator.

Anyway, I am hoping that the CC in DA2 will offer the people who were unhappy with the options in DAO some satisfaction.

TO be fair, the character creator in Fallout 3 and New Vegas is horrible no matter what you do. Good thing the gameplay is fun.

It's quirky, but you can do some decent stuff in it once you get the hang of it; and the toolset/GECK offers a bit more power than what the toolset in DA:O did for shapes.

But is it bad? yes it is, even if you can, like I have, after a zillion restarts and better presets (that then allow you do get more personal choices) get decent results.

DA:O characters do look better, but with a more limited palette, toolset  included.

But this isn't really a defence of the vanilla version of FO3 that had one of the worst character creations ever, just a digress.

Good job by bioware if that's the case, otherwise i imagine i would have a heard time playing a black character without totally ruining immersion.

It is the case.

Someone unlocked the character editor in the demo though, and the family appearance didn't change. Which is exactly why the character editor was locked... that function wasn't in the demo.

But Bioware has definitely said that our family's appearance will change based on our own, including skin tone.

It does change, sometimes, and its buggy (the skin of body remains the same).

I could just see Hawke on twitter right now, participating in all of the #blackpower and #ImInTheTopOfMyclassesInCommunityCollege trending topics.

That would be amusing.

Personally, I won't be playing a black Hawke.
Tried it for Mass Effect, and in all honesty the voice just didn't seem to fit.
Modelled him on Wesley Snipes in Demolition Man..... Couldn't play more than 10 minutes with the same voice though.

It's okay for non-voiced games, or games where there's a selection of voices to choose from, but when your main character has fully voiced selectable dialogue, it's almost always a non-black person's voice.

This is doubly redundant; people answer if they find the topic interesting enough; congratulate the troll for giving us something to discuss and enjoy.

Also once a discussion starts none cars about the OP anymore.

And it's a fairly civil discussion.

Yes; if the op thought he threw a granade, it turned out to be more like a fine bone for bored OCD kids. (like I)

I tried forever to do that on ME2, and couldn't get the look I wanted right. So I made her black instead and she turned out very good, very cyber punkish which is what I was going for.

Apparently not. Sigh, it's difficult to adhere to everyone's preconceived notions of how people should be. I guess I should work on that.

The way the darker skin tones looked in DA: O looked like the characters were wearing heavy makeup, not like it was their actual skin tone.

Well, I would disagree with you on that.
I think it's more a general problem of how human skin looks in the DAO engine.
IMO sometimes it can look very much like plastic/fake, similar to an earlier terminator model.
I think the option to adjust skin complexion doesn't really help in that regard because it just let's you choose between "sometimes looks like plastic" and "always looks like a blight victim". ;)
From what I've seen they have not been able to tackle this problem in DA2. I guess it's just not possible with the current technology.
To me this seems to be a flaw that player-created human characters in all current games have, regardless if their skin is light, dark or in between.

Well, by the time I get my flying car, the tech wizards will probably have found a solution.

I wonder about that - I never liked the ME1 and ME2 character editor, everyone looked rather ugly, and the hair is horrid.

But they actually got some things right, and black characters was one. (with the c.editor, the game as a whole was mostly in the right) .

lol! So you think they look like T-600's? That's a way of looking at it I guess, but ME2 worked for one of my Shepard's, she looks like a black woman.  They all look pretty well rendered, but there could always be improvements.

Just games like Saint's row 2 does black skin and black features a lot better than DA did (if you ignore the hoodlum clothes) .

Its not just the shaders and the lights and how the engine renders them; and I think you can do nice versions just using a flat diffuse, well we did at work (but under NDA so can't show any of it).

& Like Android# points out it looks pretty good in games like ME, but also other Unreal games, and other games besides.

My other female Shepard was made up like Kate beckinsale, and it took a little while to get it right. Gibbed really helped with that one, but it could always look better. Hopefully for ME3 the character creator ismastered, but hopefully DA2 will be similar to ME2 for the creator than Da: O. *crosses fingers* hopefully gibbed makes an editor for 360 and not just pc.

OK so can someone tell me what black people are supposed to sound like? I dont see why Hawkes voice would hinder his black skin color. Every black person doesn't talk like Cole from Gears of War my bruthas and sistas.

Thats funny because it implies that anime characters are white by default when they're mostly drawn in Asia... Posted Image

Agree with this. What are black people suppose to sound like?
I didn't think the voiced hindered my black male hawke at all when I was messing around with the unlocked CC version of the demo.

So sad isn't it?  Apparently there are no dark skin people in England or they all speak like they grew up in the hood in the U.S....  based on subsequent posts by the OP I do think he was just trying to enflame people's racial biases but I'm glad that for the most part people have ignored him and had a pretty interesting discussion.

I always make a character that looks more like me when I'm offered the opportunity.  So I will be making a darker skinned Hawke.  Glad the family will resemble my character but even in the original it didn't bother me when they didn't.  I just imagined my char was adopted.  I actually liked the fact that my character was extremely unique compared to all the other people in the game.  To me it just added to the notion that "this guy is special" feel you're supposed to have for the hero.

The thuggish thing keeps in tune with the theme of saints row, so it makes sense. Would be rather ridiculous to have a college educated character in an armani suit playing saints row. Now, if they made a game based on the wire, that'd work.

It's funny though, Saints Row 2's graphics are subpar when compared to ME2, and somehow their character creator is more varied and better rendered than a visually superior game.
