I tried forever to do that on ME2, and couldn't get the look I wanted right. So I made her black instead and she turned out very good, very cyber punkish which is what I was going for.

Apparently not. Sigh, it's difficult to adhere to everyone's preconceived notions of how people should be. I guess I should work on that.

I think the problem is in part due to the dialects in the game remind me of dialects from here, so some sounds a bit irish, and I expect beer and gingers and the like ~

& at least for the male Hawk I would take it as a compliment, since he mostly sounds constipated or like a trite ponce that just ate a bucket of gravel (all while trying to act).

Agree with this. What are black people suppose to sound like?
I didn't think the voiced hindered my black male hawke at all when I was messing around with the unlocked CC version of the demo.

Good to hear.  I felt the same way about my black shephard.  In fact if felt more normal since my friends and I are professional and tend to speak the same way most of the time.

OK so can someone tell me what black people are supposed to sound like? I dont see why Hawkes voice would hinder his black skin color. Every black person doesn't talk like Cole from Gears of War my bruthas and sistas.

I wonder how many people realize that Sarevok's voice actor was black.

...and that he also voices Cleveland Jr. Posted Image

So sad isn't it?  Apparently there are no dark skin people in England or they all speak like they grew up in the hood in the U.S....  based on subsequent posts by the OP I do think he was just trying to enflame people's racial biases but I'm glad that for the most part people have ignored him and had a pretty interesting discussion.

I always make a character that looks more like me when I'm offered the opportunity.  So I will be making a darker skinned Hawke.  Glad the family will resemble my character but even in the original it didn't bother me when they didn't.  I just imagined my char was adopted.  I actually liked the fact that my character was extremely unique compared to all the other people in the game.  To me it just added to the notion that "this guy is special" feel you're supposed to have for the hero.

Hit the nail on the head. You're either "not really (insert ethnic group here)"  experiencing some sort of self loathing,  or some other ridiculous nonsense. I try  not to pay too much attention to comments like that, but it would be nice if I could have a conversation with a stranger without them commenting on my diction or use of polysyllabic words. 'Tis a bit patronizing, no?

I like making multiples. I have 4 different Shepards and 3 different DA: O characters, mix up physical features, personalities, combat preferences and you could have a genuinely new experience every time you play through.

Calling Aboriginal People Indians is incorrect. They are not Indian, nor are they of Indian decent. Christopher Columbus wrongfully called them Indians because the moron thought he travelled around the world and was in India.

Actually.....Christopher Columbus DIDN'T call them Indians because he thought they where in India, it was most likely what he used to describe them in his journals, he called them "Una gente in Dios" or "A people in God", "in God" being in Dios. In Dios, India. In fact, India wasn't even called India at this time, it was called "Hindustan"

Yes!  You get it from both sides.  "You aren't "blank" enough or "wow you speak so well!"  - Well i should I grew up here just like you!  Ugh.  Anyway, if I had the time I'd play multiple varieties like you do.  I usually do make a black and an asian character.  Or, one that looks more Indian since my wife is from India.

This thread has so much potential even considering the intentions of the OP may not have been genuine.  I never have much of a problem playing as a white character since that's been the default since Mario.  it's just a nice option and I'm glad Bioware gives us the option to explore something different.

 What?

Is that some kind of joke?

Because if it isn't, I would like to know what this statement is actually supposed to mean.
Anyone, please feel free to answer.

The way the darker skin tones looked in DA: O looked like the characters were wearing heavy makeup, not like it was their actual skin tone.

Dangerfoot wrote...I think they're saying that they don't have the features that people of african origin have on our planet. "black people" in DA are just white people with light mocha colored skin.

Basically like anime characters.

It wasn't so much the features, they just looked like Laurence Olivier in Othello.

Xeranx wrote...It got real close though: "we'll spill some drinks on the citadel" and "looks like a suicide mission, I volunteer".  Those two had me rolling my eyes especially considering Miranda's response to the second about it being noble and all.

I don't see how those are stereotypical of black people. Seems more typical of soldier characters, which Jacob is.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with soldier characters.  I'm more familiar with what I've seen in movies and on television for a large part of my life.  Most involved the depiction of spilling drinks for their dead and it was always done by what many would refer to as hoods (black men on the street).  I should add that "we'll spill drinks on the Citadel" was prefaced by "we'll get loud" (which is a common stereotype of black people).  You say spilling drinks is more a soldier thing...then I'll take your word for it and not mention it again.

I have no real problem with black Shepard speaking proper english, but I have to say that his voice doesn't match up to any black Shepard I've ever made. Which is not to imply that all white guys' voices are wrong for black bodies, just in this case it didn't look right to me.

Oh, I see what you mean. I understood it more as he wanted to get ridiculously drunk, to the point where you're spilling your drink. That however doesn't explain the suicide mission bit. He honestly felt more like a soldier than a person in the game.

What is wrong with libations?
Even the ancient Celts and Romans performed them and they weren't stereotypical "hoods" as far as I know.
IMO Jacob is simply a soldier through and through.

I figure he finds it offensive, since its been used as a stereotypical act for street gangs in the U.S., even though that practice is centuries old.

I saw some black versions of Hawke in another forum and they actually had a nice brown skin tone. They werent purple or "dark skinned white people." At least in my opinion.

I guess I lumped that into what I considered a stereotype because it annoyed me.  My apologies.

Hawke is not African American as neither Africa or America exist there. Neither do any Earthly nations just get over it. You may make him different colours but not any nation. Personally I want him purple with green hair but yet again Bioware let me down (sob wipes at eye)

Which is probably why most Bioware characters are white.
