Though I really hate the Term African American, or really any sort of race/ethnic group American. Its like me I have lots of Asian and European Ancestory and Cheerokee Indian. But I don't list all of that. My Wife is 3/4s Chinese 1/4th Vietnamese. She marks Chinese on Forms though to prevent arugments, just as I do white, where as I'm pure enough the ****'s would have shot me for the asking. But the term is just stupid, as not everyone who lives in Africa is Surprise, not black. I'm pretty Sure is a Tan Arab North Africa, or a White South African went into the DMV and Marked African-American on his race that would draw a few stares, more so if they professed to being that in public.

Is this just an American thing? Do black people in England call themselves African Britons? Do black people in Australia insist on African Australians? What about non-English speaking countries?

Or, better question, what about in Fereldan? Do they call themselves African Fereldans?

This is just a dumb idea. Your character is not african american no matter what. He's dark skinned ferelden, like others have said.

Because there are people both black, white, asian, hispanic, etc. who prefer it.  It is like calling Indians, "native americans" or "american indians", neither of which are correct, yet there tends to be a lot of uncertainty and contention over which one we should use. (even among American Indian peoples)  If it isn't hurting anyone (and I haven't read any studies which suggest use of terms like "african american" or "asian american" cause self esteem, identity displacement, or other psychological problems) then I see no problems with it.

Calling Aboriginal People Indians is incorrect. They are not Indian, nor are they of Indian decent. Christopher Columbus wrongfully called them Indians because the moron thought he travelled around the world and was in India.

 What are you talking about?The steelers sadly dashed away my Jets Super Bowl dreams.The Giants got "shut out" by the cheese head packers.

During the regular season the Packers shut the Jets out. In October, I think.

The Jets fall flat on they face some times and always get right back up with a vengance just ask Tom Brady.I doubt that  A-Rodgers is gonna get any more rings.Next year is Jets year. The only thing that can stop the Jets from finally getting that ring is a NFL 2011-2012 black out.

I would think it's up to them to determine what they want to be called. I've heard "Aboriginal Americans" call themselves Indians. Are you going to tell them they're wrong?

No it isn't, but "black" has been used as a way of or reason to insult people in the past, where we don't see that with white people - at least not in this part of the world.  (actually, I suppose there are areas in many states were being white, or "too white" is also considered an insult)  Thus there is some sensitiviy over the issue, for some people.  

And the follow up statement about Indians, while correct, no longer applies.  Yes, it was a mistake once upon a time, that stuck; and because it stuck it is still widely used and I know many "native american" peoples who insist that if you don't know the name of their tribe, then "Indian" is a find and good way to refer to them. (including the american Indian professor in my, native american psychological studies course)

Still, I understand the intent of the OP. My first Hawke is going to be white, but I'll have to experiment with a black Hawke to see how my family members come out. Because some pictures of the alternate Hawke family are butt fugly when they're white, but having darker skin might make them look a heck of a lot better.

Lol, wow, this.  It's funny, I was just thinking about this the other day.  But I supose that is what mods are for... Like for example, my avatar right now.  I loved this hairstyle, but it pained me that for my primary character, I couldn't have this hair even though Sten did....(...Gods, Sten truly is the avatar of what I can't have --) So for my first character, before I discovered mods, was bald, which was still nice because she was very beautiful, but to respond to your original post, I agree that it is kinda a drag not to have more hair choices for different hair types.  Although I really don't want to think about how much time and energy it would take to create a hair style for F!Hawke which contained the detail of something like this:

(One of my good friends has hair like this **sigh** mine will never be as beautiful as that)
