 Hi,

I am playing a mage in Dragon Age Origins on Xbox 360 (haven't downloaded Awakening yet).

At level 13,  I tried to perform the phylactory ritual. The quest appeared to work but I never got a message "specialization unlocked." It just says quest updated.

I thought maybe it would unlock when I leveled up, but this didn't happen. I continued playing and after visiting Haven and entering the caverns I found a sword that can only be used by an Arcane Warrior. My mage cannot use this, so now I'm sure something went wrong with the quest. The mage is lvl 14 in the caverns, and just about to level up again.

I've gone back and tried the phylactory ritual a dozen times and it always says the same thing. The quest is updated but I don't get any specialization. I did accept the blood mage specialization several levels ago. Perhaps this is blocking me from Arcane Warrior?

Anything I can do to get Arcane Warrior at this point?:o

May I ask as way of clarification where this phylactory ritual you are performing is taking place?

Lower level of the ruins in the Brecilian forest.

(spoiler) shows the PC version. At the end there is a message that the specialization is "unlocked" but I never saw this message.

To eliminate the blindingly obvious, I take it you followed through the correct procedure/choosing the right dialogue options and released the essence as it desired, yes? Sometimes, but not always, the game is a little slow in updating info. Sometimes, it's just bugged. If it's bugged...not a great deal we console players can do to be honest (my usual suggestion is to repeat and hope that it will sort itself out).

As a matter of interest, what exactly does the codex say when the 'quest updated' sign flash up?

It says new quest, Arcane Warrior.
If I look at the quest info it says I placed the vial on the altar. That's it.
I see that I have two specialization points available right now, and I recently got another item that can only be used by Blood Mages - but I can't use this even though I have two blood spells from the earlier quest.

Maybe I'm just not seeing how to activate the specializations. I am trying to press every button on the controller....

Hmm after some further reading I guess I didn't unlock blood mage because I had Jowan enter the fade and fight the demon, rather than doing it myself. I wanted to give him a chance to redeem himself - so the game screws you over and denies you the specialization. Great. This is way to far back for me to go back and fix it. Apparently you keep your specialization points until you unlock something, then you can choose it. I haven't unlocked anything yet.

If it helps. I believe you can get blood mage specialization through a tome within Denerim. Also, any play through will unlock all other 'games' for specializations. It would be impossible to see every ending/specialization in one game unless you completely plan for it or reload to just do that option. You will probably play the game again. If not. I suggest either replaying that part quick (if you have a save) then going back to your latest game or just looking for tomes that teach you.

I plan to play through once, then download Awakenings and play again. I just wish that I knew what I did wrong in the lower level ruins. Maybe I did nothing wrong and I'm just not seeing how to actually activate the specializations I've unlocked.

Apparently there are pictures in your profile that correspond to the specializations you've unlocked. To choose one, you click on it somehow. The problem I'm having is how in the word do you get to it using the Xbox controller? I am going to look at this again - maybe there is something I keep missing.

OK the arcane warrior spec did actually unlock, even though it didn't say "specialization unlocked" when I completed the phylactery ritual. This must be a difference in the Xbox vs. PC version. I was just too impatient when I leveled up to see the specialization bar, instead going directly for the stats. You can't add a specialization unless you are currently leveling up.

I got Arcane Warrior after all. I have Spirit Healer and Shapeshifter available also, Blood Mage is still locked. The only other specialization that interests me is Blood Mage, so I hope this can be added in some other way (as Dawnhorn said with a tome?).

Edit: Apparently can also be unlocked in Awakening by a manual from a dwarf Bartender in The Crown and Lion in the City of Amaranthine. Hehe looks like I may have to install Awakening earlier than I planned....

I added Awakenings, but unlike some of the other downloaded content it doesn't add additional places to visit to the map. So, I guess I'm out of luck. I saw a post where someone said there is a tome in Denerim after the Landsmeet, but there are other posts that say that isn't true.

I'm a little perturbed that such an important specialization can be missed in the game by making a simple mistake (letting a different character enter the fade). The plot line led me to try and redeem Jowan, and choosing this was a huge loss for my character and I didn't know it. I'm considering just going back and starting over again.

Oh, you know what? Denerim didn't have Blood Mage. However, in Amaranthine, you should be able to buy it. I think Awakenings tomes will also unlock origins.

It's not easy to get all specializations within the one playthrough unless you know what you're looking for; using a guide for example.

Good to hear your main problem is resolved though.
