suliabryon wrote...Oh, and and perhaps of interest - I have a regular RP group that is all women (tabletop rpgs, ala D&D, etc). It's a lot of fun. I also play with a group that mostly consists of men, but the two styles tend to be pretty different, LOL. There is a much more heavy romantic element to the all-girl group, while the other just tends to largely skip that and go straight for the combat.

That makes for a nice change to hear, how many women in your table top group?  I have had a terrible time getting many women in my games - over the 20 years I've been GMing I've never had more than 2 steady female players at any one time ... and currently only have 1 in a group total of 5 members. (though she is an old friend, gamer, and girlfriend to one the others, so she doesn't have to feel uncomfortable being the one out among us)  I have found that running male and female players can be very different in some ways - especially when it comes to what they want to emphasize in a game or even what kind of game systems they prefer. (my female players tend to prefer rules light systems which allow them to get into the story faster and require less memorization of mechanics ... while most of my male players prefer to have very mechanic heavy systems; after 20 years I've tried many games ranging all across that spectrum)

I wish I had a female friend who played the Dragon Age series and who would giggle about the LIs with me ... as none of my male friends tend to care about that as much as I do and would be caught dead before actually discussing the "pixel romances" in any meaningful way.

I don't have any female friends who are interested in gaming except online.  Online friends are the best.  You can always find SOMEONE who shares your interests online.

Have you ever had the feeling of being so excited or giddy over something game related and you rush over to your phone, hoping to text or call someone about it and you realize all your girl friends don't even know what Dragon Age is?

Yeah, I had that too...=] but it was pretty funny when my room-mates were observing me like I was some kind of a rare animal at the time demo came out, they loled while watching me squee;) and later when they saw the game one of them took it from me and played herself! She was playing with commitment, got very irritated when the ogre attacked ;p but she still think I'm crazy...uh well, what can I do :P

There are a total of five of us who play regularly, but the sessions themselves tend to average three-four at any given time. I would tend to agree with your observations - in our group, we pretty much throw out the rules and have things simplified to a D20 roll - a handful of bonuses, but for the most part it's roll vs. roll, and no character sheets. We use pictures, usually of various models found online, to represent characters in the game (I have over 1000 photos saved to my computer) and we just play and get into the story. My 'regular' group is very focused on the mechanics. For instance, we're currently in the middle of a Star Wars campaign, and the guys sit there and hammer out how capital ship combat works, and I tell them I'll only run games if they do the numbers for me. :) Women in general tend to be more story focused and "don't bother me with all those rules", in my experience.

I do have a couple of male friends who play DA, and one of them talked to me at length about his romance with Morrigan. He was pretty thrown by how it all ended! :D

What systems have you tried so far?  If you're looking for a system which allows a good range of playstyles both in its themes and mechanics, I highly encourage you to check out "Deliria" by Laughing Pan Games.  It's system runs very smoothly and focuses primarily on  bringing your character to life, rather than crunching up its numbers.   When I ran my lengthy Star Wars campaign I used the Deliria system (with a few modifications for the sci fi elements)  and found it to be everything I could has asked for in telling a story in a Galaxy Far Far Away.

Welcome to the club. Female players whose friends don't quite get it. But there are a lot of women/girls on this site that will share your enjoyment. It does help.

My first games ever were FF7 and The Longest Journey for PC when I was 7. My dad didn't seem to care that they weren't exactly for little kids. :D

My first game when I was eight or nine was Mortal Kombat 4, so....yeah. Later I become dedicated fungirl of Lara Croft and I play many games since then. For me no game is better than Dreamfall and Dragon Age.
It's nice to see I'm not crazy and there are other girls who play games :))

Yeah I've been playing games since then. Although I still can't play Mortal Kombat... isn't that the fighting game where you rip people's spines and hearts out?
I just couldn't get into Dreamfall, I really wanted to, but it felt so different from Longest Journey. That and I hated the sneaking/combat.

I actually know quite a lot of girl gamers in real life, and DA:O is a pretty good way to get into gaming. My bf even has his mom playing DA:O now, when all she used to play was tetris and such.

I have tonnes of buddies as well, but they treat me like OneOfTheBoys!
Come on... I even have a modeling portfolio (kinda). Is it wrong to be Asian gamer girl in an Asian society???

Maybe it's the chasing guys part...

Clearly 99.9% of guys in your area are idiots, or have never had to shut down a game to "do things together" that meant her watching sex and the city again and them frowning in the couch next to her like some kind of particularly annoyed human hot water bottle... Gamer girls are the freaking holy grail (or should that be ashes of Andraste?).

Oh, and while gamer girls obviously have a smaller pool of likeminded people to find friends from to start with, it's not that unusual for guys to have to look hard for people to go nuts over games with either. Most of my friends are music people and can rant for hours about a new album, as can I, but it they don't exactly join in on my game rants :-)

Ok... realize I am probably going to be told... Everyone knows that.... or stop being a killjoy, but being a father, with a daughter (although she's only 8) and having the OP mention she is still at school... Not everyone who posts is necessarily what they say they are on the internet... Be careful.

As an aside and knowing my sister loves RPG's.. ever noticed women can play men far more realistically than men can play women?

I'm a guy, but besides my sister, I personally don't really know very many female gamers myself.

There was an alumna at my university who went on to work for EA's marketing department, met her briefly once at a pre-professional event. Apparently, she loves Team Fortress 2 and Portal.

I wouldn't dare to play MK now, because it is like you said, but it was the first pc game I saw, probably because of my cousins ;) and I played Dreamfall before I got to play Longest Journey to find out more about this magnificent story<3 The story is something that attracts me the most to the games, that's the biggest reason why I adore Dragon Age. I'm glad there are places where being a girl and play computer games is not weird, in fact, I'm writing an academic study about relation between human needs and computer games :)

Because, sadly, some of our bretheren think with the wrong head, and the female gamers uses her intellect. That is personally why I like to have female gamers in a group if I can find one. It cools off the testosterone poisoning at the table, and helps bring in more RP.

I'm 36 and I've been playing RPGs since my teens. I've never tried Deliria, but I've played, off the top of my head: AD&D, D20 (various games via the open license), Star Wars in all its incarnations, 1st edition Vampire, 2nd edition Vampire and all the other WW games, Shadowrun, Heroes, Stormbringer, 7th Sea, L5R, um, I'm sure I'm forgetting a few! Interesting, I'll have to check out Deliria. :)

My husband's actually pretty good at playing female characters, but he enjoys playing them, and his Mom ran pageants and coached dance/drill his whole life, so he grew up surrounded by women. :)

Actually, I have not.  The reason nobody calls out women for playing men on MMOs is because guys will accept a vast level of idiocy and different traits from people claiming to be men on these games ... so if one girl comes in with her muscular male barbarian and starts bellowing about how much she has killed, and asks where the wenches are - the guys are just going to assume he's a kid, drunk, or rping that way.  Men aren't going to care if their all male party is infiltrated by a woman, so they don't look too closely.

On the other side of that, women tend to be far less trusting in this respect and it takes a great deal of skill for a male gamer to play a believable woman; many still try ... most of them get caught.  (some don't)

This doesn't mean that the men successfully playing women are better rpers than women playing men, merely that the standards one has to meet are different.
