I know there are dozens of mage threads on this forums, but they all boil down to Mage vs. Chantry in one manner or another, so I decided to see where people stand in a purely mage-centric debate. Which Fraternity of the Enchanters would you or your Warden/Hawke most strongly support and why?

My Warden would definitely go with the Libertarian party but would also support Aequitarian ideals. While it is true that mages are dangerous (something made evidently obvious) they have as much right to a life as anyone else. The more they are discriminated against, the greater the self-fulfilling prophecy that they will indeed become dangerous just out of spite (like with Uldred who imo only launched his rebellion after having his voice rejected in the Battle of Ostagar). Mages should be a self-governing body that teaches its members the importance of morals and guidelines.

  • Aequitarians - They are the dominant faction in Ferelden's Circle and promote a moderate and popular viewpoint that advocates a set of rules and guidelines for mages to live and operate by. They believe that all mages should help people and follow a set of ideals.
  • Loyalists - They follow the Chantry's
word as it is written. Often called "Chantry apologists" for accepting
the Chantry/Templars ever present observation. They are allied with the
    Aequitarians.
  • Lucrosians - They believe that mages and their talents should be used for monetary gains.
  • Isolationists - Wish to separate themselves from Templars. Chantry and indeed civilization in order to practise magic without scrutiny. Possibly "on an island somewhere".
  • Libertarians - They desire that the Circle will eventually
become an autonomous, self regulating order without Chantry involvement
at any level. They form the largest opposition to the
    Aequitarian-Loyalist alliance
  • Formari - The Tranquil belong to this group and do all the enchanting and trading on behalf of the Circle

the one that has Mages ruling over all.

Mages are like humans only with god-like powers; by natural law they are higher on the evolutionary scale and therefore should rule over Thedas like demi-gods.

The Tevinter Imperium was far more advanced than any nation in Thedas today, and it was all due to mages...so what if they messed up once? they deserve another chance.

A Loyalist with Aequitarian tendencies - in fact, I want to be in charge of creating Tranquils out of the whiny Libertarians.

The Aequitarians for sure. It'll advance society, but at least won't run the risk of unleashing a zombie apocalypse of Abominations, undead and demons on the citizens of Thedas.

Possibly "on an island somewhere"."

Don't call us, we'll call you to let you know when we're ready to take over Thedas again. :P

Libertarians, hands down. Can you imagine being stuck in the same tower your entire life? Can you imagine being thrust into a life threatening test at late adolescence or possibly early adulthood? The alternative isn't so great either. All of my mages pushed the libertarian agenda, and they always will.

Aequitarian. Freedom for all mages is an ideal, but not something that can be loosed upon the world in one fell swoop. If freedom is ever to be accomplished, it will be after years of preparing the outside world, changing mindsets and reversing centuries of bigoted perspectives. To loose the mages on the world would be a great disservice not only to the world at large, but to the mages, themselves.

Remember that mages aren't just another minority in Thedas - they have the potential to be posessed at any time, without notice. If there was a subset of humans who had the ability to explode with nuclear fire at will, you'd want them seperated from you and your's, right? Especially if they couldn't control when it happened.

Of course, if I were a mage myself I'd be an unabashed Libertarian. Self-interest is king.

Aequitarian:  I know that I have a great gift and a great curse.  I know that if myself and other mages are not 100% vigilant we can be turned into an abomination at any time.  I wish to use my magic for the good of man kind and acknowledge that there must be unfortunate restrictions on my life for that purpose.  I wish it otherwise but have seen enough terrible things happen to kind and gentle mages to know I could be next.

On topic: I would be a lucrosian/libertarian. I would advocate a separation from the chantry while supporting economic reforms that benefit mages and muggles alike!

Give the mages their own country...so that they become an advanced civilization like the imperium. Just make sure to keep it in the bounderies of the country maybe with slight expansion.
