Could this "compression" everyone is referring to be the same thing as "recycled environments" being referenced in multiple reviews?

No. Compression is how raw data like pictures and audio files are put in a small enough format that we can actually play it on our computers.

I'm aware of what compression is.

In some ways I'm sure that contributes to the smaller size, but overall compression generally means that they compress the files themselves to a more manageable level while still keeping all the details. For example a compressed verion of Origins could be around 10GB or so on depending upon what compression system they used.

Then I don't understand the question. BioWare got better compression software. Everything now fits on a smaller file size.

The High Res texture pack isn't out yet either. I think that could be a good chunk too.

Some people eat dung from BioWare like sweet candy.

Changing from mp3 to ogg and dropping two audio tracks ist not going to make 10GBS of difference.

Instead of 60 hours game will be 45 hours. We know that. Nothing dungy.

The demo was 2 gigabytes

That doesn't mean the demo was 2/5 of the game.....

(1) DA2 also loads faster than DA:O. Does that also mean less content?

(2) Windows 7 has a smaller install size than Windows Vista.

I mean, everyone agrees that DA2 has less content

the main point being made is that 1/4 of the disk space requirement is not the same as 1/4 the content

In other news Eldar Scrolls: Oblivion is 4 gigabytes and it's about 10 times bigger than DA:O

Kinda takes the wind out of your sails doesn't it?

The game has already been confirmed as being shorter. Is this debate really necessary?

I don't remember Dragon Age: Origins on my Xbox 360 being the larger. My 360 HDD doesn't even have that much memory.

I never had a single playthrough that lasted 60 hours.

This thread attempts to be a Dragon Age 2 hate thread i think. So there for a mod should do the right thing and remove it. Looking at the first 3 post make this apparent.

This is reeeeeal nice; two pics comparing DA:O's and DA 2's folder sizes and a "for those who are curious" and everyone is ready jump down the OP's throat and crucify them.

Unless Vahe has an extensive history of DA 2 bashing, (possible; although I lurk a lot, I gloss over names, unless the poster made a good comment or has an amusing avatar), then cut them some slack and just calm the frak down.

And even if they have such a history, calm the frak down.

OT: What point ARE you trying to make?

They must have optimized the level layout files -- those were really large in Origins.
Didn't they use extremely large 1000-ish bitrate music files in DA:O?

Alright alright...

First, Origins isn't 18 gigs.

With all the DLC + Awakening, the total file size is 16.6.

Now, Awakening is about 6 or 7 and Origins 8.6, and the compression they used then probably was pretty good.

Now we have a 5 or so gig file with absolute compression.
