I have played few RPGs (FFIV, fire emblem 6, 7 and 8, NWN, Harry Potter 1 and 2 on the GBC (!), started Tales of Symphonia once, Pokémon, and NWN2 and that's about it), and I shall go for NWN. Great game, great OC, great expansions, great mods, great community.
But then, my opinion isn't worth much. I don't know whether I would like Dragon Age. Perhaps I should play NWN2 and actually finish it...

Like most here, Planescape: Torment. Other than that, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a favorite of mine.
I want to play Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. I just got to get past the graphics. *Buries head in sand*

Well...
Even when this game had horribly bugs and the gameplay certanly was not as great as in baldurs gate series, but my all time favorite still remains Arcanum.
It just had such a interestning world to me, and I loved to evolve my charachters there etc. So in the end it is the game I have played the most.
If I would not have chosen Arcanum it would definitly be Baldurs gate series though.
The games that are close to these 2 for me for one or another reason are:
Might and magic 7 ( just loved the explore the world of erathia/where I played in herous of might and magoc as well)
Fallout 2
Morrowind
Wizardry 8
Seiken densetsu 3
Chronotrigger
Planescape tournament (though unfortunatly I have not played this game that far yet, so maybe it would be higher on my list later on. Really should get time to play it proporly though)

I'd have to go with my first one, which was Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. That game was a WORLD, you could literally explore any and every corner of it and would find a wreckage, or a castle, or a shrine, a village, etc. It was so vast that no matter how fast you played it, it could take you several weeks to get to the end. Most importantly, every corner of Arcanum was filled to the brim with history, every place, every character, had a story. You could fight a dragon in his lair and find the Necromancer's laboratory, or try endlessly to make your way to the invisible castle that held the fabled Azram's star (even if you didn't accept this quest, you could still find it on your own), or explore the map to find the bridge that crossed into Caladon (near the Lethe Wyvern Sighting. I had the whole map or Arcanum printed out in something close to A2), which I often did to get to that city ahead of time. Ah, those were wonderful times.

My answer to that question is usually Ultima IV, but John Epler has been making persuasive arguments in favour of Ultima VII.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is the first game that comes to my mind.
Close runner ups are Fallout 2, Diablo 2 and every Bioware game ever made

Arcanum
There have been many other good ones, but none have managed to dethrone it in complexity of world and story for me.

Single game? Planescape: Torment. Series of games (in that each follows off the other and allows you to use the same party)? Wizardry 6-7-8.

you know what's funny, I've played all of the Suikoden series (which in my opinion destroys the final fantasy series) and yes... Suikoden 2 is an amazing rpg in itself and is neck-to-neck with Suikoden as in my eyes, the greatest RPG I have ever played
