I learned a lot over a week of playing the game but I still have a few more questions (I'm playing the xbox 360):
  • When using ranged attach (magic/bow), is there a way to know whether the target is within range? Currently, when I press the attack button my character starts running towards the target which is very annoying (especially if there are traps on the way).
  • When a party member other than your main character gains a new level, I believe it is wise to allocate the attribute/skill/talent points yourself so you can tailor that party member to your needs. However, what happens to party members other than the "chosen four"? Do you have any control of how they level up? And how exactly do they level up to begin with?
  • Do party members use existing and newly acquired talents/spells by themselves or do I have to change their tactics?
  • Poison making skill: as I understand it, in order to create a new acid/poison/bomb item, you must have at least the basic skill level and you can create more potent acid/poison/bomb if you are more skilled. Does the skill level have anything to do with being able to use poison and/or using it more effectively (greater damage)?
  • Herbalism: seems to me like only one party member should develop expertise in this skill so he/she can create powerful potions. Other than creating potions this skill doesn't contribute in any manner to the character or does it?
  • Why does my character starts the game with a heavy Blood Dragon armor (which is also useless as I'm playing a rogue)? Is this related to DLC somehow? I don't sell it because it seems like a spoiler having so much money early in the game and I don't destroy it just in case it'll be needed later in the game.
  • Survival skill seems pretty weak to me. Aside from some resistence, I can always see the enemies on the minimap. What's the deal here?
  • Enchantments:
    - How can I tell which weapons can be enchanted?
    - Can you enchant items other than weapons?
    - Once a rune is used for enchantment, can you detach it from the weapon or is it permanently sealed?
    - Is a rune the only item that can be used for enchantment?
  • Every now and then you find precious stones (gems, crystals, etc.). Are these just to be sold for money or is there some other usage I'm missing?
  • Is there a way to pause the game and give orders to other party members (without changing tactics)? The only way I know of doing this is to switch control to that party member and then perform the task (consume healing potion, target a different enemy, etc.). However, this does not pause the game and can be quite annoying if I want to assign orders to multiple party members and time is of the essence.
  • While giving gifts to party members, I believe I saw "gained a skillpoint" (or something like that). Is that possible?
  • At least once, when leveling up, I received two talent points (or was it skill points)? Anyway, I thought you're supposed to get only one. Was this a glitch or there are ways of getting such bonus points (see above gift point question)?
  • New codex/quests/character are highlighted. However, if it is not viewable when I collapse the main menu node (it is further down the list), I cannot see which item on the list changed as I have to scroll down the list and once the list item is selected it'll no longer be highlighted. Is there a way around this (note I play the xbox if it makes a difference)?
  • I just realized that when attacking, my characters actually auto attacks - the character will keep on swinging at the target. I've played for nearly a week by pressing the "A" button repeatedly (used to hack 'n' slash games). Is there anyway to turn the auto attack off?
  • Do other party members skills affect gameplay only when they are active party members? For example, if I have a non active party member who has a master level of detecting traps (or survival) but he is not currently amongst my "chosen four", will this benefit me in any way?
  • Can you change active party members only while in camp? I can swear I once had the option while exploring/walking.

1) Not that I am aware of, you just have to guess then get used to it.

2) Once added to team, you will be able to assign the points to the new member, no matter how many levels he has gained while at camp.

3) That depends, if you set their tactics to defensive, scrapper etc. then they will add new skills (provided they fit the stance) when they get them provided they have the slots for them. If you have manually altered any tactics on that character then it will not add any more itself.

4) Not that I know of.

5) Nope

6) Yeah that is with the bonus Blood Dragon Armour DLC, you can get the rest of the parts from the dwarf in camp, though to be honest it isn't that great.

7) Yeah, but if you haven't anything else useful to put points in then why not.

8) It will show up when you talk to Sandal, you will see the runes in the slots.
- not in basic DA:O, in the expansion and a couple of DLCs you can do armour too.
- You can add and remove runes as you please.
- Yup

9) If you find gems with stats (small, large, flawed etc) they are for Shale the golem companion if you have The Stone Prisoner DLC. The is a quest asking for some of a certain kind of gem but the rest are pretty much shop fodder.

10) There should be a way, on the PC space bar pauses. I would recommend reading the manual for controls.

11) At certain levels offriendship they gain bonuses.

12) No, on certain levels or after some events you will gain bonus skill or talent points.

13) Dunno

14) Dunno

15) No

16) Sometimes you are able to change outside of camp, yes.

I assume you mean that if I gained about 4 levels, I then make a party member that was all this time in the camp and active party memeber - I will then have around 12 points to assign to attributes as well as skill/talent points?

Mmmmmmm...... I think I tried adding my dog and Sten after I've gained a few levels and didn't see that. Or maybe I didn't gain enough XP as at least Sten is of a higher level and I don't know if you can control levevling of your dog.

They will level up to 1 level below your characters current level, so, if you were the same level when as the character you left in the camp then gained 5 levels, when you add him/her/it to the team you will be able to add 4 levels worth of points to your companion, including the dog.

I figured out something - on the xbox, when bringing the radial menu up, you can move the radial menu and choose different targets as well as switch between party members and issuing orders. Don't remember though if the game remains in a paused position until you return to your initial character.

On a different note, yesterday I decided to start the human noble origin, as lots of people said that it has the best story (throughout the game) and best beginning. I did the Dalish Elf and City Elf origins. I understand that this is a matter of personal taste, but I must say that I was very disappointed with it. I was able to gain a level without any fights (well, actually the rats in the kitchen), you start with full armor and get a hands on a pretty good sword early on, and you also get a mabari hound early on. Even though I'm quite a newbie (less than 2 weeks - just figuring things out in the game), I think I'll go with city elf (Dalish elf isn't that bad at all in my opinion), because I have a feeling you'll have more dialog options with elfs and humans that don't regard your race well. I just prefer being low on the ladder and climbing up throughout the plot rather than start a little bit more powerful and on a ladder to begin with. It gives me a better sense of accomplishment.

As long as the menu's up it stays paused.  Use it to look around, switch characters, identify targets and issue orders.  On harder difficulties this can be a life saver.

Mmmmmmm........ I'm not home yet, but can you instruct different party members to consume a health potion without breaking the pause? As far as I remember, for my main character, it closes the menu and drinks the potion. We'll have to test it once I get the game up and running.

You should be able to hold down the left trigger, make an order (attack, use potion/item/ability) move to the next character issue orders, and so on.  Once you have finished, select the character you want to assume contol of then release the trigger and the game should resume.

As a rogue, I'm dual wielding daggers. Something just occurred to me as I unequipped one dagger - if you have one dagger, your damage is shown as X and if you have two daggers it is shown as A/B (A and B are rougly half of X). My questions:
  • I see only one number when I damage the enemy and not two. I assume the number is accumulative damage of both hits, right?
  • What is the benefit of duel wielding? Do you have critical chance for each dagger as well as backstabbing?

After some thinking, I realized that if you have enchantment on both daggers, it may add more damage. Do flaming weapons and poison also work in this manner?

Also, I noticed something which might be a bug/glitch. Sometimes, when confronted by a melee attack I run off and am quite a distance away well beyond the range of the weapon. However, I'm still getting damaged even though I'm nowhere near (this usually happens with two handed weapons which takes a long time to swing). I have a feeling that this is a bug caused by checking whether the attack hits when the weapon is used/utilitzed and the target is within range instead of checking whether the target is within range when the weapon actually hits your character. Did anybody else experience that?

I started playing this game 2-3 weeks ago and recently reached level 8 (or nine). This is my second/third of my character as each time I learned a few things I did incorrectly, mostly by spending skill points incorrectly and recently I spent a specialization point on bard by mistake. I didn't realize it until many hours later (annoying!). I also figured out that by switching to other characters with higher skills I can disarm traps and/or open chests, something I wasn't fully aware or thinking of before. Also, I wasn't always using proper tactics so it made some combats quite difficult and had me waste lots of money on healing potions and injury kits.

Anyways...... I'm thinking about starting the game one more time. I guess the annoying thing is that now I know what to expect from the quests I completed. But I don't think my decisions in those will change much as I play a "good" character (even though he is a rogue).

One of the things I learned is to save often, mostly before going into lengthy conversations. I hate it when I actually select the wrong answer/question from the dialog menu and have the wrong outcome. Or sometimes the game doesn't really imply that a certain option is lying (sometimes it does) or I mean to give a "good" friendly answer but misinterpret it and have the wrong outcome.

I think I'm mostly "early" in the game, as I explored a little bit the werewolves forest (Dalish) and just defeated the Redcliffe walking corpses.

Anyways..... without giving spoilers, has anyone else had similar experiences or can give me some non spoiler game advice related to the above?

P.S.
From the beginning I started playing on nightmare difficulty. Certain fights are definitely tough. However, I found that those fights started to become much easier on my second and third character creation restarts. I once switched to normal difficulty. I couldn't believe how easy certain fights happened to be. :)

Yes, it is a great help. Pity you can't queue order to all party members. Once you select something, the game continues. The trick is to choose an action and quickly bring the menu up again.

[*]To make poisons/potions/traps, aside from the ingredients, you have to have a recipe (probably found in books/purchased/trainer). I'm fairly certain that healing potions will come in handy. How about traps/poisons? Do they only become effective on higher skill level? I intend on being mostly an archer character that switches to melee once foes are near. It doesn't seem like I can be adept at both while putting too much points at posions/trap making.

[*]How do you delete saved games?
[/list]

[*]There is a quest in Lothering which needs you to have trap/poison making skills, but this is the only time I ever used them on my rogue. I picked up the odd bottle of poison, and used it but guarantee that at the end of the game I usually had 75% left. I wasn't playing on Nightmare mode, however.
[*]Go to the Load game screen (click on exit will take you there) or Save game screen, select the game you want deleted, press delete (no idea how that's done on the console, but that's how it is on the pc so I imagine it's similar?)
Glad you got it all working, and are enjoying the game. Personally, I much prefer the Human Noble story, simply because of the ending (I love my romantic endings!). I really strongly advise you to chose the Ranger path - you get a pet, which you can summon, and provides extra damage in tricky fights. All the pets have the same stam/damage, but you will want to learn all three in order to get the final boost skill for them all, which increases stam/damage.

I enjoy the game very much. I played a little bit as human noble but I didn't like the beginning too much. I prefer starting as an elf outcast (down the ladder) and build my way up, also not starting with armor/weapons/dog and getting them along the way.

I'm thinking about dual-wielding/assassian. I'll give the ranger to Lili. :-)

I disagree with the Feastday Gifts. As it'll be impossible to get high approval with every character the gifts are a good help, plus it only adds 50 points and doesn't instantly shoot them to max. There's still the possibility of gaining or losing approval during the course of gameplay. I think the gifts could be helpful on an initial playthrough to help you get a feel. I wouldn't buy them after that though. They are a little TOO good, but I wouldn't call them a gamebreaker.

They can be a game breaker because they shoot approval past break points and you can end up missing out on dialoge, personal quests and boinking scenes. Better to leave alone and use them to top up approval once all that is out of the way.

Few notes about downloadable content.

DLC created during the original " development push" of DA:O  is generally speaking very entertaining. (=Warden's Keep, Stone Prisoner. )  Return To Ostagar is pure hack and slash, offering number of moments where you are left wanting more dialogue and actual plot development.  Changes are you feel little bit ripped off by it  perhaps, but if you enjoy the game, you will enjoy this as well.

Stay the hell away from everything else. Rest is utterly terrifying, poorly executed junk developed by skelton crews and can only weaken your DA:O experience. Not worth of your time and only serves to taint the game.

though I haven't played alot (reached Redcliff and did part of the Dalish forest), I actually like slow progression of approval rating. a +50 seems way too much to me.

On a different note, I accidently took bard as specialization and given a point to it. Only days later I figured out my mistake. :-( I don't have an earlier save as I recycle my saves. Anyways.... I've learned more stuff in this game play and think about doing the truly last CC (character creation) and start again.
