Here is my PC Configuration.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.
Processor: AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core, 3800+.
Memory: 2GBs RAM.
Graphics Card: ATI 3870 w/512MBs VRAM.

I'm running the game on the highest settings possible (except AA which i have turned off) and @ 1440 x 900 Resolution.

I've been playing Dragon Age: Origins (The Ultimate Edition) since last Sunday, some 30 odd hours or so and i've been experiencing random crashes since the first day i started playing. The game does run with some hiccups, but for the most part FPS are perfectly playable for me in most areas, but regardless i've attempted to mess around with lowering the graphics settings, but that seems to help little, if at all.

At first i thought the problem could be my graphics card overheating or something because the problem happened after prolonged playing sessions (several hours in, i'ld say 2+) but then i started noticing that the problem sometimes also happened barely half an hour into the game. The problem isn't isolated to certain areas or situations (i.e big battles with lots of flashy FX) because it's happened in the middle of the Buy/Sell menu and the Journal.

I like the game alot so far, but i'm starting to get irritated that having to save after every battle and still occasionally lose progress because i forgot to save and the game crashes.

Anyone have any ideas here?

I've had similar issues and have tried a ton of things: update video drivers, lower settings, kill all other non-essential processes running, and unplug all non-essential usb devices.
It also doesn't help that the help.dragonage.com website now seems to only be for dragon age 2 cuz I can't log in to it at all.
My system specs are: Win 7 premium
Intel i7 2.7ghz
12gig of ram
Geforce gtx 260
I was going to go all out and buy the ultimate pack and da2 but it seems that would be a foolish waste of money if I can't even get the game to stop crashing.

Good report, and thanks for posting your specs.  Sorry you're having trouble.  I would first suggest following up on your intial suspicion of overheating...  there's free software like CPUID HW monitor or GPU-Z that can help you track temps.  Links to those and some other troubleshooting solutions are in the thread that's linked to my sig, below.

Some folks have also talked about "memory leak" issues.  I personally never encountered them, when running an Athlon 6000+, but I had more ram installed.  So in that solutions roundup, you may want to read a little about the Pagefile and how to trim it down... and, of course, try not to run too many other applications while playing.

Best,

RI

I'm downloading CPUID and GPU-Z to run then and see what results come back. Looking at the Pagefile information, i have 1569MB used, 2523 available...i'll make a lucky guess that thats bad? o.O

Another question, what exactly am'i looking for with CPUID and GPU-Z? am'i looking to post somethnig back in specific or take a screenshot of it?

Let's get thermal readings from within the game from one or both of those. Also, let's think about down-clocking some -- DAO seems extremely shy about remaining stable when anything is "overclocked", and in the case of AMD's HD 3870, the stock core clock is sometimes (not always) a problem.

I have similar issues and my build is similar.

I have
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Athlon 2 620 quad core 2.4ghz
12gb of DDR2 ram
2x Radeon HD 5830 in CrossfireX setup
27" monitor runnint most of the time  running in a 1920 x 1080 resolution full screen (except when i tried it in windowed mode for troubleshooting)

I have tried disabling alot of stuff including Crossfire at times

Still random crahses, it appears that something in Dragonage is not reacting well to a 64bit OS Particularly Windows 7 as  I rarely see this as an issue on other versions of windows

Actually, for some of us, having two peope with really different systems mixed up in the same thread when the OP author still has no fix is a bad idea. If you will start your own problem report thread, I can try to see if I can help you then.

I'll just assume that i have to simply leave CPUID running while i play and when i'm done and/or the game crashes, i'll just save the data, right?

Yeah... I usually do that, and then when the game is over, I simply write down the max temps.  I think the report function is a bit limited in the free version, IIRC... it's been a while since I've used it, actually.

I didn't jot down any of it, but hopefully it's in the saved report...the graphics card temp looks a bit, umm...."high" but then i'm no expert, so i'll let someone that knows more be the judge.

Afraid I don't see any temps for the graphics card in that soup. Sorry. How high were they?

I'll post exact temperature after my next session tonight, IIRC it was around the 120 - 130 farenheit range.

Centigrade is easier to use for this purpose.

Hey, sorry... I thought I had replied to this, but maybe it didn't save with all the strain the forums seem to be under...

Your temps don't look too bad, although I would continue to monitor the graphics card, so maybe you can catch it if there's another crash to desktop... modern GPU's are suppose to have an upper limit close to boiling... 100C, but in my opinion anything over 70C is living on borrowed time.

So heat could be a factor, although it's not a sure-thing.  Perhaps a shotgun approach would work best?  Optimize your system as much as possible... a good cleaning with a can of air, continued heat monitoring, and perhaps seeing what you can lose from your pagefile startup.  There are some links about tweaking your system in this thread, towards the bottom:

http://social.biowar...8/index/6265850

Because your CPU is towards lower end of the scale, specs wise for DAO, it may be a little hard to nail down a cause.  So if you can play without vertical sync or frame buffer effects on, or without AA, then that will help the load on your CPU.  Stopping once in a while (say every hour and a half, if that seems to be the threshold), rebooting and giving your machine a breather might help, too.  Bottom line, unless we can nail down a specific cause, "common sense medicine" will probably be your best bet.

I also have this problem.

I am running a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS with 4.00 GB of ram and an Intel Core i3 CPU-540 and an ATI Radeon HD 5800 series graphics card.

I just installed the game today and have already experienced 3 crashes in the 3 hours I have played it. Two crashes occurred at the same time when talking to Ser Wesley and his chick about not being able to head north. The third crash occurred after I skipped all of the conversation to avoid the crash and as I engaged the next wave of darkspawn, the game froze and crashed.

I am a big fan of the game and would like to know how to fix this. Thanks

Then you need to post in another forum.  http://social.biowar...egory/300/index

I just got DAO Signature Edition and I cannot get into the game without it crashing Windows.  I am running Vista.  I hit the play button and it just crashes.  Is there going to be a patch.  I go to tech support and the site is down!
