I beat ME2 yesterday, but decided to keep playing a bit more. Explored the galaxy to 100%, got every single assignment, leveled up to 30, did the works. I saved it and thought "Huh, I wonder how this would start me out if I imported this character BACK into ME2?"
In ME1, I did this and so I had two saves, one was a Shepard who had finished the game, andd the other was a slightly higher Shepard who hadn't.
However, in ME2, it asked me if I wanted to keep my appearance, which ability I wanted to carry over, and where I wanted to save (not save file, memory device). I did all that, and suddenly I have only ONE save file; my new one. I can't see my old save anywhere. I go into the Xbox's system settings and take a look at the memory and see two save files, but one is from back when I first started playing the game, and the other is from last night!
So, am I doomed to just play through the game all over again? As it stands I'm a level 30 infiltrator who hasn't passed the first mission! I want to make choices that transfer over to ME3, but does that mean I have another 50 hours to sink in again?!
Can I only save one character?

I'm somewhat uncertain as to the issue you're experiencing, but I'll chime in anyway. I'll ignore what you wrote about ME1 because that seems irrelevant to the issue at hand.
The issue, as I understand it, is that you finished ME2 and imported the ME2 character back into ME2; but having done so the game only sees one save file rather than two as you were expecting.
I think it's the norm that the game ask you to choose a location to save, even if you have the one storage device. You can change the appearance of the character imported (funny if you decided to completely change a ME1 character's appearance and everyone still knows it's Shepard, but I digress). Then you choose your bonus power. None of this is an issue.
The game sees your imported ME2 character as another character. Go to load game and press 'Y' to switch careers to see your other characters.
If you don't want to play again...
Oh, and I'm tempted to say it sounds like you switch off at the mains.

From the sound of it, I'd say that ObakaSama solved this issue. The solution would appear to be "press "Y" to switch careers to see your other characters". The game seems to save all careers as a single file so no matter how many "imports" you do, you'll always see one single file.

I feel like an idiot; I've never even noticed that option. Partly because I never looked for it, and partly because on my pre-HD screen, you can't actually read/see it!
All my saves are intact! Thank you so much!
