I don't want Hawke to participate in conversations because, what if my Hawke says something out of character for him/her? I'd hate that. Unless it's like a running joke with the companions.

Jah. IIRC, it was said that the game will track your dialogue choices and use your habits to determine when/if/how Hawke joins the banter.
I watched the live feeds and I remember Laidlaw talking about how Hawke would respond based on the dialog choices you make, I was just under the impression that it would change how Hawke would respond not the party banter, but that does make sense.

Does that mean it's back? I liked that about DA O. Morrigan's nose, my Warden's hips, Shales remarks on human relations...

How am I supposed to construct a coherent personality for Hawke if he speaks or acts without my explicit direction?Dubya75 wrote...

You had no control over banter in Origins, you will have no control in DA2. Like the Devs said however, your banter lines are determined by your dominant personality, which is based on your conversation choices.
Have a little faith.

And here I thought this would be too much work for BW. I'm impressed.
(Edit: Or I will be, if this turns out to work properly. I might be impressed, but I'm also a skeptic at heart.)
