Hmm i was looking around and couldnt find this. Im wanting to create a custom item that summons either a pet or a custom party member. I was going to follow the Follower Tutorial, but i dont think thats what i want, since im trying to use an item to bring it forth instead of a party picker. Is this even possible? or would i need to make it a skill? if so, is there a tutorial on custom pets from skills?

A unique power item is one approach.
Give the item an Activated Ability of Unique Power (Single or Unlimited Use, depending on whether summoning is a one-way trip or not).
Your module event script will need to handle the unique power event. Create the creature there, then add them to the party as described in the follower tutorial.
The only real difference is that normally followers join in conversation, whereas here you're using a different event.

heyas;
the extra dog slot uses a 'dog whistle' in your inventory to summon/unsummon the dog (though the party picker works as well). dont know if that has source code you could snoop, or if you can ask whoever made it or whatnot.
(if that's any help.)
