I am curious - have any of you guys ever tried playing the game as a wimpier character that actually gives the various bandits all of his or her money?  I see the option to do that on all sorts of guys and I just wonder if anyone has pulled that off.

Second random thought.  Obviously BG1 came out before barbarians were really around much in D&D.  Now that everyone plays BG1 with the BG2 engine though, should Minsc be a barbarian instead of a ranger?

That's it.  I'm not crazy, honest.

I'd say Berserker instead of Barbarian, since he's not savage and doesn't come from a primitive land. However, even that doesn't fit entirely since Boo is supposed to be his animal companion as a Ranger, which neither Berserkers nor Barbarians get, so it's rather difficult. I quite like how he's a member of a class for which he doesn't have the stats for as well, I find it part of the humour and the way he 'plays up' the archetypal player.

These limitations shouldn't be taken too seriously. Minsc is a barbarian ranger. (barbar being an ancient Greek word for people unable to speak Greek [everything they said sounded like bar bar bar] - Minsc is fluent in Russian, French and Latin, but he always skipped his Greek classes)

He has a rage ability and a familiar. He is part of the barbarian caste in his country, but he also likes travelling through the lands and helping people.

Sounds interesting. Logically you should play it as  a LG monk of Illmater, the god of suffering. The kicker is that some of the cutthroats also want all your good equipment. Not too bad for a monk, or a wild mage, but what about the rest of your party?  Image IPB

Gah, I remember on my early games I would reload to try all options just because so much was funny, but I can't recall anymore. Of course no one has to fight the Flaming Fist soldier(s) south of Beregost, lots of options. Similarly I keep threatening the drunk "lich" north of the Beregost temple, wondering what would happen if I actually give him all my gold as demanded.

The thing I hate about the Berserker kit is that if you play at insane difficulty, you take 30 damage when the zerg ends, so you actually take 15 points of damage every time you use it (instead of +15-15).

What happens is he takes all your money - I did it once by accident.

I've not played as a coward, though I have played a weaker character, namely a Bard with no offensive magic and little combat ability. Obviously he needed a strong party around him and use a LOT of charm spells.

I've always thought of Minsc as a Berserker.

Yeah, I think he's a ranger because that's all they had to work with at the time. Heck, there is even a berserker barbarian prestige class in 3rd edition for the defenders of the Hathran of Rashemen.

I smell a new "challenge" for some of you hard core types with the cowardly party. :D

Minsc makes sense to me as a ranger.  I thought it was established that his berserking abilities were due to one too many sword wounds to the head (and this could also explain why his stats are lower than the normal limit for rangers).
