Better head over the topic at the Character forum, there the build has been updated.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is all theory and based on the Talents from:
http://social.biowar...1/index/6090138

http://social.biowar...1/index/6359674

The concept is simple. A Blood Mage who uses lots of sustained abilities (like ye old Arcane Warrior since your Mana pool is not important) to protect and augment himself and his party. The 3 base Sustains: Arcane Shield (Upgraded), Heroic Aura (Upgraded), and Rock Armor. This nets you:
25% Armor
20% Elemental Resist, 10% Crit, 28% Defense, 10% Damage, and 15% Attack (many of these to all to allies too)

Since you will be a Bloodmage, your Constitution should be very high, which helps you in close combat. While I have this concept in my head, I dunno what offensive spells to take. This isn't meant to be a tank, it is meant to be a Battle Mage, a caster in the middle of the Battlefield who can take a punch and give it back.

Any comments, tips, ideas, etc. are welcomed.

EDIT

Here is my theory AoE Battle Blood Mage build. This build assumes 26 talents (plus free first talent):

Creation: 3
Heal/Glyph of Paralysis
Valiant Aura: 2

Elemental: 4
Searing Fireball: 2
Apocalyptic Firestorm: 2

Primal: 5
Rock Armor
Chain Reaction: 2
Strikes Twice: 2

Arcane: 3
Mind Blast (Free)
Arcane Wall: 3

Blood Mage: +25 Health
Blood Magic: 8
Blood Lust (Sustained): 2
One Foot In: 2
Grim Sacrifice: 2
Paralyzing Hemorrhage: 2

Force Mage: 125% Physical, and Elemental force for spells
Force Mage: 3
Maker's Hammer: 2
Unshakable

Primal Based Build:

Valiant Aura: 2

Primal: 8
Stone Fist
Petrify
Rock Armor
Chain Reaction: 2
Strikes Twice: 2
Galvanism

Arcane: 3
Mind Blast (Free)
Arcane Wall: 3

Blood Mage: +25 Health
Blood Magic: 8
Blood Lust (Sustained): 2
One Foot In: 2
Grim Sacrifice: 2
Paralyzing Hemorrhage: 2

Force Mage: 125% Physical, and Elemental force for spells
Force Mage: 4
Maker's Fury: 3
Unshakable
----------------------

Again everyone, this is all theorycraft, I am not sure if it would work, but it looks good on paper.

Rethinking all of this, here is what I think I would do if I wanted a Battle mage:

Level 0: Ability Name
Level 1: Mind Blast (Free)
Level 2: Fireball (or Chain Lighting if going Primal Focused)
Level 3: Arcane Shield
Level 4: Rock Armor
Level 5: Firestorm (or Tempest if going Primal Focused)
Level 6: Heroic Aura
Level 7: Blood Magic and choose the Blood Mage specialization
Level 8: Grave Robber
Level 9: Sacrifice
Level 10: Glyph of Paralysis or Elemental Shield
Level 11: Bloodlust
Level 12: One Foot In
Level 13: Hemorrhage
Level 14: Fist of the Maker and choose the Force Mage specialization
Level 15: Unshakable
Level 16: Glyph of Paralysis or Elemental Shield
Level 17: Valiant Aura
Level 18: Winter's Grasp (or Stone Fist if going Primal Focused)
Level 19: Cone of Cold (or Petrify if going Primal Focused)
Level 20: Elemental Mastery (or Galvanism if going Primal Focused)
Level 21: Pyromancer (or Glyph of Binding / Repulsion if going Primal Focused)
Level 22: Grim Sacrifice or Paralyzing Hemorrhage
Level 23: Grim Sacrifice or Paralyzing Hemorrhage
Level 24: Searing Fireball (or Chain Reaction if going Primal Focused)
Level 25: Apocalyptic Firestorm (or Strikes Twice if going Primal Focused)

Stat distribution: Alternating 2 Magic/1 Will and 1 Magic/2 Will. When 32 Will is reached, go 2 Magic/1 Con and 1 Magic/2 Con, doing the former only to reach 100% Attack.

I dunno yet if Mage will be my first run though (game arrives tomorrow). If anyone wants to give it a try, be my guest.

Death Syphon upgraded I think will also be rather key but I quite like this build, and something along these lines will be my first playthrough

Cone of Cold is a nice close-burst spell for a melee mage. I don't know what difficulty you plan on playing on, but friendly fire would affect your choice to go with single-target or AoE spells. Mind Blast would be VERY useful, for dropping threat as well as for tossing around enemy combatants.

I'd take a look at the arcane and Force Mage spells and see what would be cool out of those.

Yea im making what i would call a "Battle Mage" buff king with max damage - one thing ur missing is Unshakable from the Force Mage tree.

I think a build going Blood Mage and Buffs could be very strong (especially with some nice passives like Unshakable thrown in as finalbox mentioned). One problem though, you can't run all of the buffs at once, because of the way sustained talents work now as a % of your reserve.
Blood Mage: 50% of mana reserved
Arcane Shield: 20% of mana reserved
Rock Armor: 10% of mana reserved
Elemental Weapons: 10% of mana reserved
Heroic Aura: 20% of mana reserved

This would put you 10% over max mana. If this is the case I would probably drop Elemental weapons so as to focus on keeping all the buffs that help Hawke as well. This is assuming that the game will let us reserve 100% of our mana pool (finger's crossed).

Oh yeah, I didn't take Blood Magic's large sustain cost. Yeah, Elemental Weapons would be best candidate to drop.

This! Too bad it won't be useful with out a mod, seeing as how Blood Magic just stops non-blood magic healing...

But using that seems wasteful sienna the Mana regen part isn't used.

Interestingly, this build I think matches the portrayal of Hawke in the Destiny Trailer. Casts lighting and Fire spells, is a Blood Mage, and should be able to be in the middle of a fight.

While i am not saying you are wrong because its obvious that you are not.  Is this how it works in DA2? Or does it reserve say 50% for blood mage, then 20% of what left, then 20% of whats left, then 10% and so on.
That way there would be no limit to the number activated abilies you could have active at any one time (which makes it seem unlikely).

Just a thought.

but didn't arcane warrior use melee weapons? Would a mage have any sort of close combat ability?

Also, Staves can attack in melee, some are even Bladed on one end.

I'm doing a SnS warrior tank for my first playthrough but I would love to see some "melee" mage builds since I will be aiming on that in my second.

Hm, not bad. I kept thinking it would be mistake to ignore Galvanism, but I don't see what else you could remove in favor. Besides, you don't need mana regen anyway, so it would mainly just be 25% buffs to your lightning and rock armor. Certainly a very solid build, no matter how you look at it. Too bad I avoid using blood magic.

Tell me, do you plan to split among mag/cun/con or just mag/con? You can't really get much defense out Arcane Shield + Heroic (+ Battlemaster if you have it on your warrior), but it doesn't seem to require a terribly large amount of cunning to keep up with a 50% dodge rate, but you'd pretty quickly have issues with limited stats...

If you drop the 4 points in Elemental, you could go heavy on Primal (I am considering it myself):
----------------------
Creation: 3
Heal/Glyph of Paralysis
Valiant Aura: 2

Primal: 8
Stone Fist
Petrify
Rock Armor
Chain Reaction: 2
Strikes Twice: 2
Galvanism

Arcane: 3
Mind Blast (Free)
Arcane Wall: 3

Blood Mage: +25 Health
Blood Magic: 8
Blood Lust (Sustained): 2
One Foot In: 2
Grim Sacrifice: 2
Paralyzing Hemorrhage: 2

Force Mage: 125% Physical, and Elemental force for spells
Force Mage: 4
Maker's Fury: 3
Unshakable
----------------------

As for stats, perhaps a 50-50 split on Magic/Con would be best.
Defense, you get 33% total, the 28 from buffs, and 5% by default. Your HP pool will be huge, as big or close to a Tank's.

Again everyone, this is all theorycraft, I am not sure if it would work, but it looks good on paper.

Stupid Mages. Mages are already looking to be overpowered as is if the Destiny trailer is any indication. Image IPB

Who ever came up with the term "Arcane Warrior" needs to be set on fire for destroying the balance of all RPG games ever made.
