This is my favorite type of mage and I think I just ****ed a little over this thread.
The Battle Mage, the return of the Arcane Warrior?

Rethinking all of this, here is what I think I would do if I wanted a Battle mage:
Level 0: Ability Name
Level 1: Mind Blast (Free)
Level 2: Fireball (or Chain Lighting if going Primal Focused)
Level 3: Arcane Shield
Level 4: Rock Armor
Level 5: Firestorm (or Tempest if going Primal Focused)
Level 6: Heroic Aura
Level 7: Blood Magic and choose the Blood Mage specialization
Level 8: Grave Robber
Level 9: Sacrifice
Level 10: Glyph of Paralysis or Elemental Shield
Level 11: Bloodlust
Level 12: One Foot In
Level 13: Hemorrhage
Level 14: Fist of the Maker and choose the Force Mage specialization
Level 15: Unshakable
Level 16: Glyph of Paralysis or Elemental Shield
Level 17: Valiant Aura
Level 18: Winter's Grasp (or Stone Fist if going Primal Focused)
Level 19: Cone of Cold (or Petrify if going Primal Focused)
Level 20: Elemental Mastery (or Galvanism if going Primal Focused)
Level 21: Pyromancer (or Glyph of Binding / Repulsion if going Primal Focused)
Level 22: Grim Sacrifice or Paralyzing Hemorrhage
Level 23: Grim Sacrifice or Paralyzing Hemorrhage
Level 24: Searing Fireball (or Chain Reaction if going Primal Focused)
Level 25: Apocalyptic Firestorm (or Strikes Twice if going Primal Focused)
Stat distribution: Alternating 2 Magic/1 Will and 1 Magic/2 Will. When 32 Will is reached, go 2 Magic/1 Con and 1 Magic/2 Con, doing the former only to reach 100% Attack.
I dunno yet if Mage will be my first run though (game arrives tomorrow). If anyone wants to give it a try, be my guest.
Did we determine that you can't wear warrior armor, then? I mean, if you're pumping con so high anyway and don't need the will after getting BM, you might as well go strength and wear tank gear instead? It would increase your health as well. Both WIL and STR are wasted stats for a blood mage, so which you pick shouldn't matter in that regard. Unless you're barred from the better warrior armor, I don't see how warrior armor would ever be sub-optimal.

The concept is simple. A Blood Mage who uses lots of sustained abilities (like ye old Arcane Warrior since your Mana pool is not important) to protect and augment himself and his party. The 3 base Sustains: Arcane Shield (Upgraded), Heroic Aura (Upgraded), and Rock Armor. This nets you:
25% Armor
20% Elemental Resist, 10% Crit, 28% Defense, 10% Damage, and 15% Attack (many of these to all to allies too)
Since you will be a Bloodmage, your Constitution should be very high, which helps you in close combat. While I have this concept in my head, I dunno what offensive spells to take. This isn't meant to be a tank, it is meant to be a Battle Mage, a caster in the middle of the Battlefield who can take a punch and give it back.
Any comments, tips, ideas, etc. are welcomed.

That should help you. As always, I haven't tried it myself, so try at your own risk. Here is the Primal Build in a Talent builder: http://biowarefans.c...avVP0shGrPwQ1Cl
Stat distribution:
For using Mage Armor: Alternating 2 Magic / 1 Will and 1 Magic / 2 Will. When 32 Will is reached, go 2 Magic/1 Con and 1 Magic/2 Con, doing the former only to reach 100% Attack (Note - 42 Magic is needed for the best Staves).
For using Warrior Armor: 1 Strength / 1 Magic / 1 Con until 32 in Strength and Con is reached, then focus on Magic (Note - 42 Magic is needed for the best Staves) with a bit of Con.

edit:
Ok, thats THE BEST SPEC I EVER HAD! <3
edit2: but I'm tinking about Blood Magic + Spirit Healer.. Do you think its better than Force Mage?
ololol edit3:
you got to go too deep in Spirit Healer to get the 10 Con etc.. So stay Force Mage

Fenris staggers the enemies for my Hawke, I chain lightning them. I Petrify (and brittle) an enemy, Fenris/Varric destroy him! Anders has a small chance to brittle then destroy. Varric has a small chance to disorient, then I destroy with stonefist or spirit.
Barely having any problems on Hard, until some beefy buffing enemies or giants show up!

This is a great thread, thanks to everyone contributing. I'm currently trying out something similar. Here are my stats and how it's working out so far
Level 9 Mage
Force Mage Specialization
Strength - 20 - Fortitude - 110
Dexterity - 11 - Crit Chance - 1%
Magic - 26 - Magic Resistance 10%
Cunning - 12 - Crit Damage 52%
Willpower -13 - Mana 189
Consitution - 20 - Health - 188
Damage - 41 DPS - 30
Attack - 67% - 132
Defence - 40% - 103
Armour - 80% - 249
Equipment
Staff of Parthalan
Blood dragon helmet
Blood Dragon Armour
Boots of tremendous weight
All with +4 armour runes
Gauntlets of the Nug
Talents
Arcane Sheild - Defense 20%
Rock Armour - Armour 25%
Unshakable - Fortitude 100
Fist of the maker
Tempest
Petrify
Stone Fist
Chain Lighting + upgrade
I plan on getting Galvanism to increase Rock Armour and my lightning/stone fist spells. Then boosting Con + Blood magic
So far i'm blasting through the game on hard, can do good damage from distance and up close with staff and spells, can also take a lot of hits, just need mana! Party i have Carver specced as a Vanguard 2H damage and Aveline as a straight up tank. Varric as support archer.
Let me know what you think, hope this helps give people some idea's

Still Super Duper Serial.

Also when you have all your spell buffs up your really shiny, often will have enough mana left to cast 1-2 mabye 3 spells. Then tap into blood magic, soon after the fight will be over

If you are using Mana, consider Death Syphon. It eats 20%, but after 4 kills, every kill is net mana gain. If you are fighting a boss with little back up, leave it off. I was actually thinking of a Mana using battle mage based on the spirit tree an hour ago.AnarzanE wrote...
