Hey everyone Dragon Age 2 is coming out soon and I was wondering if you guys can assit me with a Mage character. I recently got the new 360 and I had to start a new character for Origins, wanting to try something new, I made a Spirit Healer/Blood Mage. I absolutely love how much damage I can do, but at the same time keep my party alive. The reason why I went this route, is that Wynne was not the most reliable healer and  would sometimes forgot to heal someone in the party. However in Dragon Age 2 the Force Mage seems to be promising for a specialization, but there is a problem. Either I give up a second mana pool or do not as much damage. Either way, I am getting the walking bomb spells because other wise my mage would feel naked.

Thing is, I am going to be the primary healer and dsper. Without a second mana pool, I am going to be chugging mana potions away like crazy.

Well, healers don't really do much. With a minute-long cooldown on heal, healing in general has been relegated to more of a support function. You're not supposed to NEED a healer. So concentrate on kicking ass and toss someone a heal when they need it. Also, don't play on Nightmare.

I can't say what the best combo will be yet, but I will probably try Force Mage/Blood Mage first.

ishmaeltheforsaken - Isn't that just for the demo or has it been confirmed?

Sounds like the walking bomb tree might be replaced....

I'm going with Blood Mage + Force Mage. I'm delegating healing duties to good ol' Anders.

Hopefully the heal cool down isn't what is was from the demo. So would it be possible to get full Primal, Heal, full Force, and full Blood?

I was originally planning on doing a Force Mage/Spirit Healer combo, but then I read that in order to use SH spells, you need to have Healing Aura activated. In this mode, you can't use offensive spells. I plan on being the primary DPSer of my party, so this would be absolutely awful. I'm going with Force and Blood Mage now.

I'm still a tad unsure on what I'm going to do with attribute allocation, though. I think I read in one of the threads that you can get by investing only 1 point in the Magic attribute per level. So knowing this, would it be okay to do 1 Magic/1 Willpower/1 Cun or con, or should I go with 1 Magic/2 Willpower, and throw a point at Con every other level?

Forget about being a Spirit Healer, I'll go for Force/Blood Mage. I am probably going infinite mag, 30 will, and 30 con.

i would suggest 2 mag/1 will cuz you might get by with 1 mag, but you wont be the primary DPSer like you wanted

but doesn't Healing Aura have like........a 10s cooldown?

To me, that sounds like something you can switch on and off with such a low cooldown.......

So..........turn Healing Aura off, fire off offensive spells.  When you need healing, turn Healing Aura on and use the SH spells to heal.  Then turn HA off and start blasting away again.

at least, that's how I plan on doing it..........Posted Image

This.
Also, very curious to see if Splatter and Walking Bomb stack. Hilarity ensues.

I'm just too damn lazy to do that! :D I'll probably have another mage that's strictly a Spirit Healer in the party. Setting up tactics for that's going to be annoying, though. There should be an "If party's collective ass is getting kicked, then..." condition for my Spirit Healer to activate Healing Aura.

Hm... I might just go with the more balanced 1 Mag/1 Will/1 Con route and have someone else be my DPSer.

With the more expansiveness of the specializations now, it may not be practical to invest heavily in more than one spec if you want any points left to invest in all of the other options available.

Mr. Thomas, for his Nightmare rogue, filled out his two specs and archery and dual-wield. So, heavily investing in fewer trees might actually be an intelligent way to play. So would generalizing more, but I guess it all depends on your style.

Well with mages in Origins it seemed like the best approach was to generalize a bit, whereas with warriors and rogues you wanted to just max out your specific weapon tree and your warrior tree and your specs. I was hoping with the more generalized rogue/warrior talents they would become more like mages where you're encouraged to jump around, not the other way around.

Well the bonus for being a force mage is really good

But spirit healer and blood mage seem to mesh better in their bonuses and their spells

Im not sure but we can still have blood magic (sustained) and spirit healer (sustained) on at the same time right?

I think it can go either way. I think in both of the livestreams, Mr. Laidlaw has said something like "If you want to specialize, you can be a specialist. If you want to drop a few points everywhere, you can be a generalist, too. It all depends on how you want to play."

So, I think I'm not going to be gimped if I want to pick up some talents all around, and the same is true if I completely fill out only a few trees.
