Sweet, got it running on the demo. Can't really say anything about the comparison though, don't have my contacts in and not gonna bother to put them in again. Nice blurry screen (gotta love sitting so close just to see what I type).

Very happy anyways, as someone else pointed out the GTX480 (and a 1080p monitor) was made for these hi-res textures.

Now dear Bioware, can we also get 1080p cinematics pweaze?

Pfft. Keep your 1080p..:P

BioWare can be have 2560x1600 cinematics pweaze? *bats eyelids*

Better yet...can ALL cinematics use in game graphics settings for seamless movies / gameplay.

Showoff!

This good enough for high res ??

it'll run but will chug more then usual.

god dam i thought this card would be able to do it .... i mean i can play crysis with high graphics why not DA2?

it might be fine. people are saying they have installed the texture pack into the demo.

maybe ask them for instructions and you could test with your 512MB card. it might give you an idea.

eventually someone who has done just that will chime in about how well it runs.

Death to patches! and unfinished products!

I didn't like it at first, but actually it makes perfect sense.

If the rest of the game (sound files, low-res textures, everything) filled 1 DVD, and there was too much empty space in the second DVD, the cost of the second disk for every retail copy was a big waste. (Only 1GB content for a 8GB disk, but same cost for each disk).

This way people won't waste hard disk space if they can't handle the hi-res textures, and those who can handle them can download'em (took me 20 minutes with ****ty DSL).

Really, there are many things you can complain about DA2, but the texture pack is not one of them.

You are right on that, I probably would have done the same but I still stand by my words in the overall picture.

How much will this affect performance if I only have the are minimum VRAM requirement for it?

Should I run it now or tommorow when I get the game?

Just to clarify that you do NOT need to have a DX11 capable GPU to use the high resolution textures. To get the full benefit you need to run the game using the DirectX 11 renderer, which is backwards compatible with DX10. So even if you have a DX10 GPU (and Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7) you'll still be able to run the game using the DirectX 11 renderer.

If you can only play using the DirectX 9 renderer you'll still get a small benefit out of the texture pack. In particular certain character textures will look nicer, but most of the benefits on the environments don't apply to DX9. The reason for this is technical, and it has to do with the maximum texture sizes allowed by the DX9 vs DX11 APIs.

Thanks for that clarification. I had no idea that that could be the reason :)

I can't help it. I'm really, really short. :(  I have nothing else... It's compensating for the height you see.

Directx 10 cards are backwards comptaible, eh? Nice one.

Still curious about the subpar VRAM on some systems.  Earlier I got an answer saying I couldn't run the hi res patch with 512MB.  However later posts said it would work.  Really would like clarification as I would like to experience some of the enhancements of the patch.

I have a 768mb vram GTX 460 superclocked. I chose this video card because I read an article which said you dont need 1gig vram for a resolution as low as 1920 x 1080 which is what I run. The added vram only made a difference on very high resolutions when I looked at comparisons, which is why I chose the 768mb card over the 1gb card. If I cannot run the high res textures with my gtx 460 768mb card at 1920 x 1080 then I was completely mislead by all the articles which recommended that card for the resolution I game at.

Even if you have less than 1 gig of vram, by all means go ahead and experiment with the download. At worst case the game will run very slowly when hi-res textures are enabled, but if that happens it's easy to turn the hi-res textures off from the video options menu. The amount of the slowdown could vary depending on where you are in the game and how much memory exactly you have.

We've added the 1GB as a guideline so people know what kind of hardware will support this glitch free, but if you're willing to get some performance impact you should still download the texture pack and experiment with it.

I just checked my system info on my 9800GT and it says I have

Total available graphics memory: 2815 MB
Dedicated video memory: 1024 MB GDDR 3
System video memory: 0MB
Shared System Memory: 1791 MB

I think it might be enough, anyone know for sure with the info I provided?

Yep, that's enough - the dedicated video memory is the all important value there.

Sabresandiago's post (just above yours) made me think... how much is the impact of the high-rez pack relative to screen resolution? My card does have 1GB, but I still get nervous. That said, my monitor's only at 1650x1080. Am I perfectly safe?

I'm running dual HD radeon 5870 1024 mb with slight OC, Patch is downloaded and ready to go, when 12 am hits I'll upload some screenshots. That is if I can get myself to exit the game.

The first time I played ME 1, I averaged 10-15 FPS. It was awesome.

No offense but that's insane... I can't imagine playing a game that way.

I played Oblivion with those numbers almost constantly. I was using more mods than the game could handle (literally... I had to merge a bunch together to get the game to load them all), and I know that affected it. But it was playable.

Now, I never had that problem with Mass Effect. ME and ME2 I run at max with steady 60FPS framerates. I think I've upgraded since I played Oblivion, though *shrug*

Just so everyone knows...the Bioware link for this pack is extremely slow. Shacknews has a mirror for it and I just downloaded it in 8 minutes...all 1.1GB.

Already got it earlier today before the DL lanes got clogged, but it's a good tip for anyone still trying to download it :)

Glad I grabbed the pack at work then. Was getting about 3.1 MB/s there. University internet FTW!

Hehe. Brings me back to the good old days of getting Wing Commander Privateer running on some amazingly low piece of equipment...memory is faulty but I think it was a 386SX...flying with the keyboard to hit a target that 'jumped' was just amazing.  Dedication through that makes the rewards so much better...

I'm surprised no-one's asked this yet, but is this download only for those with a 5.2 GB install directory, or for those with a 6.6 GB install directory as well?
