Anyone know if there is a seeded torrent for this? The file size is not ideal for server downloads.

I'm surprised no-one's asked this yet, but is this download only for those with a 5.2 GB install directory, or for those with a 6.6 GB install directory as well?

Just check if your game settings have the "Hi Res Textures" option enabled.  If not then you don't have it.  If so then you have it.

Even if you have less than 1 gig of vram, by all means go ahead and experiment with the download.

Thank you, Sir.  Man, release day has pulled you techies out of the woodwork, so to speak.  We almost never see you round these parts. :D

I like the techies. They always have the most interesting things to say. But Mr. Laidlaw is just so good-looking.

Will do. Thanks.

So why is this a separate download and not part of the PC DVD anyway?

Because it wasn't done when the disc's content was finalized.

Plus it is 1.1GB of space they saved on a (roughly) 8GB DVD.  THey can cram more gaming goodness on the disk then!

Well, it seems to me that they could have just made the textures at extreme resolutions to begin with, and used mipmaps for medium and low resolutions. But, we get a whole new set of textures for high-rez. I'm not sure why they did it this way, but it makes no difference to me :police:

The game is only 5-6 gigs.  The reason the Texture is not on the DVD is so they can get it out of the door for Xbox and PS3.

The Texture is only for PCs.

That would make sense. If turning the high-quality textures into a Day-0 download means the game is released to consoles sooner, I'd call it a fair trade. No sense delaying a three-platform game for a PC only feature that's able to be released by launch anyway.

Just to clarify that you do NOT need to have a DX11 capable GPU to use the high resolution textures. To get the full benefit you need to run the game using the DirectX 11 renderer, which is backwards compatible with DX10. So even if you have a DX10 GPU (and Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7) you'll still be able to run the game using the DirectX 11 renderer.

If you can only play using the DirectX 9 renderer you'll still get a small benefit out of the texture pack. In particular certain character textures will look nicer, but most of the benefits on the environments don't apply to DX9. The reason for this is technical, and it has to do with the maximum texture sizes allowed by the DX9 vs DX11 APIs.

Thank you for that clarification!:) It's very refreshing to hear from an actual graphics programmer/developer from Bioware/DA2 and not speculation from random posts.  You've given me a good deal of peace of mind. These are the type of facts I've been looking for for the past week.
Once again, thank you.

My card only has 856 or so memory, but Windows 7 claims the total graphic memory is 4095 MB, so hopefully that means i'll be okay.

That's shared memory, which is much slower than dedicated VRAM. That said, with 800+ MB of dedicated memory, I'd hazard a guess that you may experience some stuttering while the game loads textures in and out of memory, but I doubt it'll be anything major. It should be quite playable :)

It's also good to note that the GPU isnt the only important thing. DA2, like DAO seemed to have benefited from Quad Core over Dual Core. Hence why they recommend it. This also helps with the game run smooth. It goes hand in hand. You may have a killer card, but if your CPU isnt the best, you'll probably notice some slow down.

I have a 1GB Radeon 5850 and i5-2500k CPU so I think I should be good to go.

By the way, you need a dx11 video card to run dx11 with its features. That's the 5-series and 6-series AMD Radeons and the 4 and 5 series Geforce's. Otherwise it will just downgrade to DX10.

Which will still be fine with the texture pack. The DX11 renderer is backwards-compatible with DX10 hardware. You won't get tessellation, but you will be able to see the larger textures, unlike on a DX9 card.

Downloading it now too. I have like 3GB or so Video RAM... forget exactly, but according to my dxdiag it's 2799MB.
