I just made 2 quick screenshots to compare the high res textures. Relevant info: Screen resolution 1680x1050, DirectX 9.0c, quality at medium (limit for DirectX 9)

So far I only notice the high res textures impacting armor, clothing and characters... not on the environment. Pay close attention to the armor in these pics, particularly the pauldrons (shoulders) and chestplate.

I've experienced no performance loss whatsoever (steady 60fps regardless of texture pack) on my intel core 2 duo 2.3ghz, 2gig RAM, ATI 5670 1gb, 1680x1050 screen resolution running on WinXP Sp3. I think Bioware was a little paranoid about the performance cost / loss with the texture pack.

All in all, the difference is quite noticeable during gameplay, but only on characters mostly, haven't seen too much difference in the environment.

@Hathur: If you're running XP, you're forced to use the Dax9 renderer, which is why you're nit noticing environment improvements. DX9 can't process textures that large.

[EDIT] That said, the improvement in the armor and sword hilt is lovely =D

This free texture pack is very very good of them, Cant believe I still have to wait until the 11th to play it though. :(

This will be the case with DA2 as Bioware has stated it focuses on details of the characters more than it does on the environment. Its the same issue with DA:O and the lower resolution textures of the environment compared to the character models and such.

No. As I said, DX9 isn't capable of using textures as large as the high-rez environments.

DX9 actually CAN process textures that large.
Environment improvements like tesselation is DX11 stuff, not textures size.

You're wrong. Click the BioWare logo beneath this thread to read what the devs have to say about it. Andreas explains why only DX10/11 cards will see much improvement.

As I said, improvements, like tesselation.
NOT the size of the textures.

Worst part is none has made a statement of any kind, and it's an AAA title after all and all the Nvidia users are being affected (dx11).

That's the most annoying part to me. We're all just left here to twiddle our thumbs and sit in the dark while both Nvidia and Bioware are either doing something or nothing.
Some kind of info on what's going on would be nice afterall.

Till then I'll hold off playing till we at least get some news on the situation.

If you can only play using
the DirectX 9 renderer you'll still get a small benefit out of the texture pack. In particular certain character textures will look nicer, but most of the benefits on the environments don't apply to DX9. The reason for this is technical, and it has to do with the maximum texture sizes allowed by the DX9 vs DX11 APIs.

DX9 max textures size is 4,048 x 4,048
DX10 is 8,096 x 8,096
DX11 is 16,384 x 16,384 (I think)

So, unless the pack comes with textures bigger than 4048*4048, which is doubtful, it doesn't matter.

Anyway, I'm stuck with DX9 on my old rig with Windows XP and a GT240... but with 1 GB ^^
Guess I can give it a try !

That is, when I get the game, of course...

If you know anything about the nvidia driver release cycle, you know that they don't cut
corners in their non-public release tables. And very rarely do they care about
game optimization.

The features they are trying to add and get working before they go WHQL will be
added no matter how long it takes. The best bet is EVGAs SLI Enchantment
patches coming out regularly for games.

So is this Nvidia issue isolated to just SLI configurations or is it any Nvidia card? I just removed my ATI 4870 for a GTX 580 just for this game. SOB....

It's one thing to optimize your game for one company's GPUs, it's another to leave all the gamers who use the other company's GPUs completely in the lurch. How come BioWare didn't give Nvidia the chance to make a driver optimized for the game early, so that it would be ready by the time the game is released? How come we have to wait for Nvidia drivers because Nvidia seemingly got the game the same time we did? This is unacceptable.
