Why not just download it and try it out? Its not like your computer will spontaneously combust :)
I have no idea what the HD pack contains. If the pack only uses unique DX11 features to render there is no point in downloading it..

It does not only use DX11, I've got the pack working in the demo, it's a definite improvement, on high the demo is using dx10 lighting and shadows, the best place to see the difference is in Kirkwall.

How you get it working with the demo.. I WANNA TRY I WANNA TRY :D

Screenshots please! Which I realise won't be possible until release time, but hey.

the legitimate version is already unlocked in some region of asia (such as South Korea)
if we have any luck, some of players from asia will come up with screenies soon.

We'll see if this works on Steam.

None of the official or non-official patches posted by the Bioware devs worked on the Steam version of Dragon Age, which meant it was always weeks behind the retail version.

I realise.  I don't know how to memory share but on my graphics card I have 512MB.  I know that the patch doesn't need DX11.  However it might not work at all without 1024MB.  Which is my question.

Should my Radeon 5750 be able to run this?

Using high-resolution textures requires a graphics card with at least 1024MB video memory.

Bloody hell!  That's the only thing preventing me from using it :crying:   The new card I bought before Thanksgiving has 768mb.

With video card that has only 512 MB of memory, you will have a drastic fall in FPS or possibly constant lagging if you use high-res textures. :(

As far as I know, that's the kind of graphic card I have (I have Radeon 5600/5700 series for laptop only). So yes, it should be able to run the hi-res textures. :wizard:

I used 7zip to extract the exe and put them in the HIGH folder, I backed up texturepack.erf then renamed highreslevelartfp.erf to texturepack.erf, note this does have a side effect, at least one I've noticed so far, a helmet was not rendered, not surprising since that texture is probably in the highrescharacterartfp.erf

Question. Will the Hi-Res texture pack be made available to mac users of DA2? It'd be great if it was since the game is on Mac and PC.

If it runs at all. The game will probably check your VRAM and refuse to run the high-res texture pack because of the VRAM requirements. I mean, what you're describing here is the effect of putting textures into the pagefile, which basically makes the game unplayable.

Thanks very much for that. I guess from what you're saying about the helmet that the demo doesn't load the high-res character textures?

Wrong. It has passed from a lot the time where drivers considered only the VRAM of the first gpu. Now VRAM is shared and seen as a whole.

you shouldnt post something as innacurate as that without linking a primary source (like amd or nvidia).

reading around nvidia's SLI zone:

When I configure two graphics cards in SLI mode, do the graphics cards work together to create double the memory size?[/b]

No. In SLI mode, each graphics card uses its own frame buffer memory to
render a 3D application. The operating system will report a graphics
card frame buffer memory size that is found on a single graphics board.

http://www.slizone.com/page/slizone_faq.html

same thing said on amd's website.

if you believe differently, stop posting your own opinions and instead link to a reputable source - if you actually do have a point it'll help people, won't it?

ACCORDING TO NVIDIA AND ATI
if you have two 768MB cards, you have 768MB of video memory.

Bah, a texture pack. Something that fans have been waiting for for years. I wish Mass Effect got that kind of treatment...

Anyway, I'm running on GeForce 9800GT with 1GB VRAM, but on WinXP and thus DirectX 9. I wonder if there's any sense in turning on the texture pack if I have to keep my settings at Medium :| I have the power, but not the technology. Damn Microsoft for not making DirectX 10 and higher backwards compatible with WinXP !

They're probably using some textures greater than the size limit for DirectX 9, hence the recommendation.

I'm not going to get into why Microsoft didn't backport DirectX 10 / 11 to Windows XP, because I did that in another thread and it got really long. Suffice to say, DirectX 10 is dependent on improvements implemented in Vista (with WDDM, the security model, etc.) to the extent that it was pretty much impossible for them to port it to XP. Also, they did the same with DirectX 9 back in the day. You can't install DX9 in Windows 98, for instance.

Don't quote me on this because I've not checked it proberly, but I think highrescharacterartfp.erf contains both terrain textures and character textures, possibly the reason it's so large, I'm trying it out now, the terrain is certainly the same, just trying to find armor of some kind to see if it renders.

Speaking of hi-res textures, it was mentioned by a dev that ATI/Nvidia will be releasing new drivers today to better optimize DA2? Any word on that front?

the maximum texture size on dx9 is 4096 x 4096. pretty big.

dx11 might be faster. it could be prettier - but if it is - i doubt its due to texture quality. will wait for a dev to comment.

Why do they have to make it so freakin' difficult? Why is not a game _A_ game anymore? this about having do install several different things i.e. the patch after installing the game.. why cant they simply put EVERYTHING in one BIG BAD ASS package (like kim kardash) and im also tired of dev's not properly finishing theyre product before they release it so we the costumers have to be sceptical as hell everytime we download something that is ment to improve the game but usually does the opposit
