I never caught this the last time I played Awakening, because I killed Nathaniel Howe.  (Roleplay reasons).

When you give Nathaniel the family bow, he talks about his grandfather Padric Howe.  Apparently he abandoned the family to become a Grey Warden, and act that Rendon Howe took to be dishonorable to his family.

Then, in the codex about the Howes of Amaranthine, it talks about how Rendon Howe's father originally sided with the Orlesians, which changed when Rendon Howe took control of the estate.

I only read The Stolen Throne once, and never The Calling, but I vaguely remember it mentioning the Howes fighting with the rebellion.  Perhaps there is more there that I missed.

But, seriously, did Rendon Howe have two fathers?

That's nobility. They even have more parents than the peasants.

In the little history lesson you get in the HN origin it mentions Rendon Howes father sided with the Orlesians and was called Tarleton. Padric Howe could've been Nathaniel Howes other grandfather, his mothers father. Nobility were always marrying cousins etc so a Howe marrying a Howe isn't inconcievable. Or it could just be a slipup, take your choice.

If it was his maternal grandfather he wouldn't have the name Howe.

Unless incest is rife in Amaranthine...

As i said it wasn't exactly unknown amongst the nobility to marry a cousin, besides which Howe might be as common a name in Amaranthine as Jones is in Wales.

I assumed Padric was a great-grandfather. People call their great-grandfather/mothers regular ol' grandfather/mother all the time.

Think of Levi Dryden...Sophia Dryden is his great-great-grandmother, but he calls her just "grandmother" when he sees her.

I guess that fits best.  Though the way it is written and comes across, it really does seem like a blunder on the writing team's part.

Ha. I didn't even think of something as simple as that. I had this whole fanon explanation in my head where Padric was Tarleton's second son*, and after Padric "disgraced" the family by heading off to join the Grey Wardens, Tarleton adopted Rendon -- Padric's son in truth -- as his own and tried to get Padric written out of the histories entirely.

I think that's more fun. :P When codex entries and dialogue clash, I tend to favour the dialogue. The first Cousland Teyrn, for example. Dialogue says it was Mather Cousland, codex says it was Haelia Cousland. It's easier to ignore something written (and easily moddable) than it is something spoken aloud.

* I liked how this tied into Rendon's distaste for Grey Wardens and dismissal of them as an order of "second sons".

But, yeah, you may well be right. Even though I suspect it was just a continuity flub, and the dialogue itself implies pretty heavily that Padric was Rendon's dad.
