Ok now I'm confused. I thought my card couldn't support high-res textures, so I pulled up my GT 220's info from the NVIDIA Control Panel to check and here's what it says about memory:

Total Available Graphics Memory: 3839 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 1024 MB DDR3
System Video Memory: 0 MB
Shared System Memory: 2815 MB

Does this mean I can support the high-res textures?

RAM
Recommended: 2 GB (4 GB Vista and Windows 7)
You Have: 3.2 GB

I am running a 32 bit operating system windows 7 how come it is saying I don't have enough ram to run this game? I am possitive I have 2 2 gig sticks of ram making that a total of 4 gigs :S

32-bit Windows cannot use your full 4 gigabytes.

So do you mean I can't run this game? :S GRRR!

You can run the game since you meet the minimum requirements.  The recommended requirements are a different issue.

If you can run the demo, you can run the full game.

You should still be able to run it.

32bit versions of Windows can only access a total of 4gb of memory (System RAM and Video RAM)

So it's using 3.2gb of your System RAM, it's dedicating the remaining 0.8 to Video RAM.

You can. While 4GB is recommended, you should do fine. Mininum requirement is 1,5GB for Win 7.

I will recommend the 6850 or 6870 if you want higher. They are 150$ and 200$ and are a blast at their price. Both will have no problems with the hi-res texutres. You'll need a 550W or better power supply unit (PSU) with 2 6-pin cables (those connected to the GPU).

Sorry, macs and laptops are not upgradable -- for us mortals at least.

32-bit Windows can only have 4 gigs of memory at once, both gfx memory and RAM.
64-bit Windows can allocate 17.2 trillion gigabytes of memory at once. Never expect that to be a limit in our lifetime.

I have a GeForce580GTX for games such as this, and swtor mmo. As the year passed I watched as each new video card came out. At one pointthe 250 GTX cost 400 dollars. However I was informed if I don't need the video card right now to wait, and so I did. My 8800GTX at the time ran at the same performance as the 250 GTX, However now my 580GTX is supposed to be one of the top cards on the market. But you should be able to buy a GeForce 460 for 150 dollars

Well everything on the reccomended page was ticked but my ram it was saying I don't have 4 gigs when I do but since I am on a 32 bit operating system it ain't showing up the full 4 gigs does that mean I should still be able to run this game fine? I know I have 4 gigs of ram but for some reason that is the only thing that ain't ticking.

@ Zazally
- The RAM is a non issue. The game will have 3.2gb to access...which is more than enough for DA2.

Performance is going to be dictated by other components.

zazally, have you tried the demo? A RAM shortage will end in the game shutting down telling you that there's not sufficient memory to load.

Good news to you, your PC seems to be capable of supporting the high-res textures :wizard:
Dedicated memory is what you should look for.

Most of the increase in graphics is going to come from DX11 settings (Which your card doesn't support).

But if you have the hard drive space, give it a whirl.  It looks like you can 'activate' and 'deactivate' the higher textures from the boot menu so they won't be permanently on anyway.

You'll get a nice framerate, but 512mb memory won't allow hi-res textures to run smoothly.

All newer videocards(made in the last 2ish years), have the ability to use system ram as local vram, it's a bit slower(really do you notice 1ms transfer rates? really now). And directx10 and higher allow caching to system ram for vram if there is insufficient vram.

What it comes down to is whether or not the game will allow caching to non-vram. My GTX450 has 1gb of vram, but it also uses 1gb of system ram giving me 2gb in total.

Got me a spanky new 6870 just for situations like this. Its a shame they are putting so many people out of it with the requirements. But its just one of those things I guess.

Just checked, I have 238 GB free disk space on my Local disc (D). Also my computer is a Intel® Core™ 2 Duo CPU E4600@ 2.40GHz 2.40GHz 3.25 GB of RAM.

Since you have a 32-bit system, your system can only make use of about 3.75 gigs of ram, no matter how much physical memory you slap in the machine.  It has no idea where the "extra" is, it's like tryiing to google a street address that doesn't exist.

In order to make use of more than that 3.75 gigs of RAM, you have to upgrade to a 64-bit system and a 64-bit OS.

But 3.75 will probably be plenty if you've still got XP--Vista and 7 eat more memory for the OS so you need even more memory to run games smoothly.  But XP is (relatively) low-resource IIRC.

It's counting shared system memory.  When a game requires more memory than the video card has, it can utilize the system memory.

Ignore it.  In practice its a moot point.
