my question was a better explanation of one of varric's tactics
"If Hawke < any then use goad"
i dont really understand that, is it hawke < health? or just simply hawke any. i play on ps3.
thank you

Also, slightly OT but what kind of magic resist caps are there for 100%? Have you guys found +magic resist % items overall useless compared to items that give for example, 400 fire resist? I've read that Templar gives innate 50% magic resist, so that gives me pause on stacking anything further on Hawke. And did they do away with mental/physical resist checks? I'd love to see a section regarding this in the OP because this playstyle really needs a strong resistance/immunity to stuns and knockdowns. Even mentioning the ring and amulet from The Black Emporium would go a long ways since they give flank and stun immunity.
Yeah, unless the OP wants to refine the tactics section, I'm almost inclined to rewrite it with EXACTLY word for word what the slots should say. When you're first starting out, some are far too vague to decipher properly (e.g. Enemy > staggered then go to next tactic) and take a lot of guesswork. Not knocking the guide at all, just etiquette is all.swk3000 wrote...
That's a 'Hawke: Any -> Use Ability: Goad' tactic. It's designed to re-direct all threat to the chosen ally, so this causes them to attack Hawke.

I do use back to back as an escape ability
Varric > being attacked by melee or ranged then use condition for next tactic
Varric < 50% health then use condition for next tactic
Anders > any use back to back

I have not updated the tactics section with abilities I get over about level 12 because it was too much of a hassle. It shouldnt be too hard to figure out how to use the abilities through tactics.
Not neccessarily true. I look at Back to Back, and while I can figure out how to use it in Tactics, I can see absolutely zero reason for doing so. In fact, I don't even understand the point to this ability at all.
Also, it strikes me that committing yourself to creating a guide like this requires more effort than you seem to be willing to put in. We don't think like you do, so some insight into why you chose the tactics you did would be great, as it would help us to better understand how to use the build to full effect. You don't even have to do it all at once; just do one character one day, then do another character a few days later. These things are much more manageable when broken into chunks, rather than trying to do it all at once.

I'm an elitist min/maxer at heart, so this kind of stuff truly fascinates me. For the average joe, this guide is more than adequate but guys like me are always looking to dissect and optimize. Either way, I'm truly enjoying this guide and my current playthrough of nightmare has you to thank!

I just noticed the updated note on the tactics section and before we turn this into a witch hunt I just wanted to ask if the reasoning is due to elitism or simply time consumption? If you don't want to share all the tactics you use because of hours poured into theorycrafting them, then I completely understand. However, if there's simply so many that it becomes a chore to type them up, I'd be more than willing to assist. Perhaps you could capture them with FRAPS and I can draw up a draft for you, including what levels to add them.

Ill fraps my current tactics and maybe you can type them out for me. Its a time thing not elitism. If I was elitist I would never have written this guide.

I am just about to start act 3, ive been going through the game super slow since im making these videos and writing the guide. When I have passed the game, I might update the tactics section and other parts of the guide. Right now im considering dropping templar and going with full on reaver, or maybe trying berserker level 14+ (silence does not even work if the enemy is already in animation for casting a spell)
Yes please do, I've been exploring the Reaver tree a bit more, lots of fun. I haven't touched Beserker yet, but you'd think that would be the best specialization for us Vanguards...

OK, here's what I have for Merril:Sabresandiego wrote...
Tactics Video
Maybe someone can write them down or improve them for me?
Offensive Support Mage: Merril
Condition | Action
1. Self: Health >= 50% | Activate: Blood of the First
2. Self: Health < 50% | Deactivate: Blood of the First
3. Self: Any | Activate: Elemental Weapons
4. Self: Any | Activate: Rock Armor
5. Self: Health < 25% | Use: Health Potion
6. Enemy: STAGGERED | Use current condition for next tactic
7. Enemy: Target rank is Elite or higher| Use: Crushing Prison
8. Enemy: DISORIENTED | Stonefist
9. Enemy: STAGGERED | Chain Lightning
10. Self: Being attacked by a melee attack | Mind Blast
11. Enemy: Highest health | Horror
12. Enemy: Target rank is Elite or higher | Hex of Torment
13. Enemy: Highest health | Hex of Torment
14. Enemy: Nearest visible rogue | Misdirection Hex
15. Enemy: Highest health | Misdirection Hex
16. Hawke: Any | Tempest
17. Enemy: Target of Hawke | Winters Grasp
18. Enemy: Target of Hawke | Stonefist
19. Enemy: Target of Hawke | Spirit Bolt
20. Enemy: Target of Hawke | Attack
For one thing, we want to move #10 between 5 and 6 because if Merril is being attacked, we want to prioritize her survivability. Also, I noticed you don't have petrify being used anywhere; did you drop this skill? You have dessicate as well, so that's two points going to waste without it in tactics.
I'll have to work on this more tomorrow when I get the chance, because I think there's room for improvement here. I sure wish this forum supported tables. . .

Only thing is that varric never uses Rhyming Triplet for me in tactics: Enemy: Target of Hawke > Rhyming Triplet. He just stands there full stam the whole time
But alas buddy don't ever stop making more vids plz

I noticed that just a few minutes ago - a Revenant in a Sundermound Cavern was starting to cast and I couldn't silence him because he had already startet his casting animation - tried it a couple minutes later on another one and the same thing happend there as well.
Petrify works better on most mages, if you have a mage add a tactic to petrify any magic Elite or Lower Magic attacker. Cleave + Upgraded Holy Smite works also pretty good. Still, investing in the templar tree to get more passive abilities seems like a good itea and 50% magic resist always a good thing to have.
Otherwise I think I would go for Reaver and improve on that tree, seems to be better synergy then the berserker tree.
I only started Act 2 today so I'm not that far in the game.

Animation speed is field 42, modifier value has to be 0 (or 5 if you have isabella's buff at the time). Same for defense, but I don't remember the field number. Credit for this fix does not go to me.
And btw, the slowed animation also affects your special moves as well.

I'd highly recommend it... hell sacrifical frenzy alone is worth it. You may also want to consider looking at Taunt and Bravery(upgraded with the +5% dmg/enemy)

I just found out that I have been using a gimped character throughout act 2. Getting Isabella friendship makes your character attack slower and slower, until he is barely moving. And sebastian friendship lowers your damage resistance lower and lower until you are at -35%. I am at -1%. No wonder those demons with xebenkeck could practically 2 shot me. This game is just full of bugs
LOL... you might list them, perhaps? I have no idea of what are the bugs. Just reached level 10 and having fun with my two hander. Only thing I changed asap was the Blood Dragon set. I really hate the looks and could find a decent plate in a shop. Also, I'm trying to get a new sword. Bonus items kinda spoil the game for me. Pitty they sell so cheap. (Love my purist 2 Handers in Origins and the gold from blood dragon armor right at Ostagar is really all the bonus I could wish)
I'm really glad you made this guide because this game in anything other than Nightmare would be boring and so fast, imho. And NM without this guide would be such a pain! heh
Oh, and pitty we can't have Champion specialization too. I love my champ/zerker! =)
