First off, thank you for this guide... it is very helpful and informative. :)

Sabresandiego wrote...

All of my companions are pumped full of constitution. That makes a big difference. Only varric has cunning instead of constitution. Also, my tactics have my companions focus firing on my target, which helps me kill things faster. Devour isnt necessary. As for as bugs, this game is full of them. Its incredible this game got through beta testing.

Could you please include the attribute distribution you use for your companions for each level up (at least for your preferred companions)?  For example, do you literally go 100% Constitution for Anders, or do you split the points amongst Constitution, Willpower, and Magic?

Thanks again!

The high dragon is a real pain in the ass. Killed him on my first try though.

Don't get hit, Debuff + DPS hard.
1st transition phase @ about 70% - dragonlings, followed by fireball spits that really hit hard (finally a good opportunity to use the resistance amulets/rings/belts!)
Standard Dragon phase
2nd transition phase @ about 40% - dragonlings + 1 dragon, followed by fireball spits
Standard Dragon phase
3rd transition phase @ about 20% - dragonlings + 2 dragons, followed by fireball spits
Standard dragon phase

This fight was very long and annoying, but not as hard as the Rock Wraith. Make liberal use of potions ;)

I'm surprised you think the Rock Wraith was harder than the High Dragon. Even with all of the spells / talents / equipment, I felt that the High Dragon causes so many issues for your team.

And a question for the OP: Do you use Elfroot Potions or any of the crafted potions for Act 2 and 3 while your companions use the regular pots to make sure you can solo fights if need be?

Yes I use elfroot potions, mythals favor, debilitating poison, and the mighty offense potion. And to the poster above I dont go 100% constitution on anders, I give him 1 constitution every level.

I am yet to face a High Dragon in this game but I certainly hope it's a bit easier than the Rock Wraith. Couldn't have done it without Anders and he insisted in dying half way. Finally after a long long night and countless attempts I've defeated it in NM... over 30 minutes fight... perhaps even a lot longer... until I got lucky and only Merril kept dying throught the fight... phew... (had changed it to Normal diff just to get that thing dead and see how it felt then reloaded the NM save and finally succeeded... felt like cheating otherwise).

This guide is simply amazing, friend. I just have a few questions...

1.) Can this still be applied to a game where you are pausing? I haven't had the courage to play a nightmare difficulty game even on Dragon Age Origins, and the daunting task of not pausing is rather...insane. :P

2.) Are there any other guides that are even remotely like this in this forum? I find it rather cool how you outlined almost EVERYTHING.

I have an idea on how to save a few Tactics slots on Varric. I've only got Varric at Level 7 at the moment, but here's what I've got:

1. Self: Health < 25% --> Use: Health Potion
2. Self: Mana or Stamina < 10% --> Use: Stamina Draught
3. Anders: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack --> Jump to 6
4. Merril: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack --> Jump to 6
5. Self: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack --> Jump to 6
6. Hawke: Any --> Goad
7. Anders: Being attacked by a melee attack --> Armistice
8. Enemy: Nearest visible --> Pinning Shot
9. Enemy: Target of Hawke --> Rhyming Triplet
10. Enemy: Target of Hawke --> Attack

The part I'm particularly proud of is 3-6. Basically, instead of having three separate tactics, we re-direct all three to a single tactic, saving 2 tactics slots to expand his behavior.

That looks good, I have also improved Anders tactics greatly, making him way more mana efficient. I will post a video in a moment.

I uploaded a video of my latest tactics, which are superior to the ones listed in my guide. If someone wants to write them down for me I will paste them into my guide. Also might be good to edit in the shortened varric tactics from above to save space for people who are short on tactics slots.

Did you see my comment about Panacea tactics(previous page I believe)? For Anders, avoiding exploits, I'd consider activating Panacea only when needed. Something like:

1. Self: At least two party members below 50% health - Jump to 3
2. Ally: Dead - Jump to 3
3. Self: Any - Activate: Panacea
4. Self: At least two party members below 50% health - Aid Allies
5. Ally: Dead - Regroup

You would need more tactics slots, but it'd be more efficient. I don't see any real benefit from Panacea regeneration aura.

Edit: Now that I look at it, he would always have Panacea active, right? Maybe you could add a new line to deactivate it if those conditions aren't met.

Thanks for the solid build Sabresandiego!
I did have a question regarding your tactics setup that I was hoping you could answer.

For Varric, you have the following listed:

1. Anders: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Use current condition for next tactic
2. Hawke: Any – Goad
3. Merrill: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Use current condition for next tactic
4. Hawke: Any – Goad
5. Sebastian: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Use current condition for next tactic
6. Hawke: Any – Goad
7. Self: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Use current condition for next tactic
8. Hawke: Any – Goad

Does the following tactics setup accomplish the same exact thing while using fewer tactics slots?

1. Anders: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Jump to tactic 5
2. Merrill: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Jump to tactic 5
3. Sebastian: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Jump to tactic 5
4. Self: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack – Jump to tactic 5
5. Hawke: Any – Goad

Edit:
Nvm, I see that swk3000 beat me to the punch.
I take it that they accomplish the same thing then?

Do you have no room in your build to spare two points for Rally? I see that you don't use it.
I find using it just for the regen boost is extremely useful even if its other parts aren't working as they should. Your party will never run out of mana.

Might be just me but I personally think passive is better then range well it is for me varric and anders do not die as much when I set them passive instead of ranged. At least I always see them moving away. This also helps with keeping some enemies busy and they keep their distance from them while attacking then chasing them down drawing more agro on themselves. The rest of the tactic other then that work really well.

This looks like it will activate goad regardless of whether conditions 3-5 are true. Should be something like this, unless I am missing something:

3. Anders: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack --> Jump to 7
4. Merril: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack --> Jump to 7
5. Self: Being attacked by a melee or ranged attack --> Jump to 7
6: Self: any --> Jump to 8
7. Hawke: Any --> Goad
8. ....

I just found a glitch regarding the Maker's Sigh potion.

  • Use the potion
  • Immediately save without using any Ability Points
  • Reload the save file
  • The game will have issued you a default skill (Gave me Giant's Reach for my warrior and Fireball on my mage)
  • You will notice you will have 5 Ability Points still at Lvl 5 but essentially you got a free skill
At step 5 repeat steps 1-4 and you can get an infinite number of Ability Points, assuming you have enough money to buy potions.

(This was tested and found on the PS3, unsure if it works on Xbox 360 or PC)

i tried this, and i got giant's reach and sunder with all my previous skill points back... i like it, but its wierd
