I have no more tactics left to make use of any other expansions on his behavior, so even the single saved slot is helping me out. Later on, I may expand it.

Also, what happens if the 'Ally being attacked' doesn't trigger? Does the game ignore the next tactic entirely, or does it use it without the qualifier? Because if it works like I'm thinking, wouldn't Goad be on Cooldown all the time anyway? Even if no-one is being attacked, the next tactic on the list says to use Goad on Hawke, so Varric would use it anyway. You may actually need to do it Thrakkemarn's way in order for it to work the way you want.

Agreed, I never feel like I have enough tactics slots, and although I can micro fine, it's just so much cooler to ave the AI do stuff so battle flows and you can enjoy it.

Unfortunately it is unclear how the game processes thse tactics swk3000. With the additional tactic others added (it wasn't my idea initially to add the Self -> Any skip) the game SHOULD skip Goad, but like I said it just flat out doesn't work.

Regarding Attribute spread, it isn't entirely clear how to split them each level up, but you can easily go 1:1 on Str/Con early on, until you hit the 20s and then slow Con down. A Con of about 32 should let you equip everything, and according to Sabre a Will of about 25 or so should be all you need to use all your abilities endgame. So my fnal goal is 25 Wil, 32 Con and everything else into Str.

The ideal way to go would probably be Str and Con to about 20 by 7 (slight emphasis on Str), Wil to 15 by lvl 8, then probably alternate 2 Str:1 Con and 1 Str:2 Con until level 12. At level 13 go 3 Str, and 14-16 go 3 Wil. Or at least, this is what I'm doing :P

Just now I beat the Rock Wraith with my vanguard party. damn it was a real hell and took at least 40 minutes to beat. I never played Dragon Age on easier difficulty than Nightmare haha. my party owns thanks too this guide and the tactics are just amazing. I hope this guide will update too it's fullest. btw as for party member and especially Anders and Merrill, how's the attribute balance distribution?? I somehow went up too 28 in magic with anders but stopped when I realized he's a healer, so I balance the rest between con and will. as for Merrill should I go with 60/40 balance in mag and con for her?? and as for Varric I heard cunning ends at 40 and the rest goes to dex right??

As for Hawke, I dont really think its that important how you distribute attributes. I picked the 60/40 rule arbitrarily, basically allowing me to survive assassins 1 shots but also dealing maximum damage. An easy way to follow the 60/40 rule is just making strength = 150% constitution every level. Nothing is exact, it doesnt have to be precist. So if you have 20 constitution, youd have 30 strength. If you have 48 strength you'd have 32 constitution.

That looks like it could be an improvement on brand, however remember that brand never wears off so its hard to waste it. Im not sure how far the targeting radius is for (enemy highest health) but hopefully its not wasting it on weak enemies.

As for tempest, just like haste I like tempest to be cast right after Ive used cleave + scythe, which is when im at about 75% stamina.

Right, but Brand is a 30s cooldown, so blowing it on something you're going to smash in 1s is a waste.  I think you may be misinterpretting (or maybe I am) what highest health means.  To me that means 100% HP or hasn't taken damage yet.  I suppose I could test this and see what Varric applies brand to.

Tempest makes sense, I guess.  Not sure I'll use it, though.

Double Tempest is simply amazing if you have something to keep the enemies clustered in one area (like your Warrior, or Gravitic if you're a Mage).  The damage on it isn't as huge for burst like Fireball/Firestorm, but it's overall damage seems to be greater over time, especially with how enemies can wander into it after it's already used.  On top of that, it constantly stuns enemies for 1-3 seconds which is great not only as damage prevention, but also to interrupt Assassins and Mages.

I have a request.
I'm getting my ass kicked on this one quest called "Night Lies". I'm finding it harder than the Ancient Rock Wraith

Can you post a vid on how to beat it?

Hey, love your abilities, but I tried out your attribute distribution and I couldn't wear anything. You're awesome, keep owning the Nightmare, man.

You should be able to use all equipment you find if you are investing 60% strength 40% constitution.

Hrmm, must be doing some math wrong. I'll look at it.:o

Hmm, there's a problem with how you have Panacea set to deactivate. Because Hawke is usually above 50% HP, it sometimes ends up being canceled before Anders can cast aid allies or regroup. Soon as it's deactivated, it's put on CD as well. Ideally, you don't want Panacea to be deactivated until the group is full HP again, but tactics don't work outside combat thus it won't trigger until you enter combat again (pretty much defeating the purpose of managing it for mana use). Really, really poor talent design forcing you to use such a draining ability just to rez.

Using this build on my current playthrough. It's so fun. I never play as warriors but this gave me an appreciation of them, big time.

Good job, TC.

Deep Roads Expedition.
Level 11: Sunder (4)
Level 12: Reaper (9)
Level 13: Killer Blow (6) +  Massacre (12) by using tome of physical technique

Sabre, How do you get a tome of physical technique during the deep roads? please explain thanks. Also, I am finding that Second Chance seems to only be worth while on difficult bosses that have stamina draining attacks like the mature dragon (who stuns you constantly and is just annoying, not even hard) So I am reluctant to keep it... what do you think?

Yeah, I can see how switching Panacea like that could get me into some sticky situations. I'm not really having problems keeping Anders alive at level 13. Will he really need the rock armor later on? I was happy leaving Panacea on. It's a big mana waste, but this build doesn't need much more than a couple heals per fight.

Thanks for the buying locations, Jodou!

Great guide Sabre! I beat the Nightmare Rock Wraith on my first try, and I only had to use two potions. Your vanguard is an absolute monster.

I've finished the game yesterday with this build at last. The problem now is that it spoiled me. I don't think I'll be able to play anything else and have fun at the same time...
Firstly, it showed me the power of Silence. It must be the most game-breaking skill on Nightmare, because it neutralizes so many difficult opponents.
Secondly, it really allows for a quite pause-free playthrough, so I was able to just enjoy the action as opposed to babysitting everyone on my mage attempts...

The fact that it works on most bosses is truly broken, agreed.  I just got Righteous Strike and I'll laugh so hard if the silence proc also works on bosses.  Did they even attempt to balance this game?

So by 60/40 you mean 2 points in strength & 1 point in con? I thought it'd be 66/33. W/e though, how are your attributes getting distributed among your party. Is it 60/40 w/ w/e attributes they need or what? Why us Varric "con" not "cun"?

This was a very detailed guide. When I started my warrior, I sort of overlooked the vanguard tree. That was a complete mistake because Cleave is absolutely ridiculous. I don't even think you should ever play a two-handed warrior without it. I pretty much had no problems after Ancient Rock Wraith.

I did change my build from yours, and I went into Reaver instead of Templar (I did take Holy Smite though). Reaver seems to add a lot more damage where Templar adds utility. You can do ridiculous damage with reaver, and the self heal it gives basically fully heals you (scales with cleave and blood frenzy), stuns and staggers almost all enemies (useful on Arishok to stop potion), and does lots of damage at low health.

Aura of Pain also scales with Cleave and Blood frenzy so the damage it pulses for goes way up. I used it for pretty much everything except the hardest bosses in which I just switched to Control to make sure I was hitting at full strength without glancing blows.

My only complaint, which doesn't really have to do with your guide, is that melee characters like Isabella are worthless in Nightmare. On my other character, she does a lot of damage on Hard difficulty. I really like having her in the party because her and Varric are hillarious especially together. Maybe it's just me, but I would rather see an option to toggle on friendly fire for all difficulties so you could play Nightmare without it. I feel like friendly fire is more of an annoyance than it is a difficulty modifier.

Anyways, great guide. 5/5

Guys, the spread of points is a GUIDELINE, not rule. Find the balance in points that's comfortable for you. The importance of keeping an absolute 60/40 allocation is trivial.

Sorry to belabor this, but I just left the Deep Roads, but I didn't find anyone to buy this from... Who sells it, and is it actually IN the Deep Roads?
